This is the spellbook of Winifred Sanderson. It was given to her by the Devil himself. The book is bound in human skin and contains the recipes for her most powerful and evil spells.

Satan, also known as The Devil, is one of the overarching antagonists of the Hocus Pocus franchise.
He is the ruler of Hell and the master of several witches in Salem, four of them being Mother Witch, Winifred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson. Before both of the films’ events, Satan created a dark magic spellbook to give to his female followers who wanted to become witches which was eventuality given to the Sanderson sisters, making Satan responsible for all the atrocities Winnie and her sisters committed with the book. The sequel revealed that he had corrupted more women beside the Sanderson sisters and that the aforementioned spellbook was the byproduct of the pact between them and the sisters' predecessor thus passed down throughout generations.
Given who he is, it’s possible that Satan was once an angel named Lucifer who was banished from Heaven after rebelling against God. Satan created the Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy, a spellbook of various forms of evil witchcraft such as elemental powers, transfiguration, alchemy, necromancy, evil spells such as a cat transfiguration spell and the Magicae Maxima power spell, and recipes of evil potions such as the Life Potion, a potion that would grant a person the ability to suck the youth out of another. The book would also emmit a bright orange vertical light in order to show the owner where the book's location is. Women wishing to become witches would either contact Satan in order to sell their souls to him for the ability of witchcraft and receive the spellbook from him or they would receive the spellbook from the book's previous owner.
Hocus Pocus[]
Around the 17th century, Satan was somehow contacted by Winifred Sanderson, a Salemer woman who wanted to be immortal and young forever due to William "Billy" Butcherson, her fiancé, cheating on her with her younger sister Sarah, leading Winnie to murder him. Satan complied and gave Winnie a dark magic spellbook called Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy that contained thousands of spells and potions, among them a Life Potion. Thanks to the book, Winnie and hers sisters Mary and Sarah lured Emily Binx to their cottage, suck her life out with the potion and transformed her brother Thackery, who had come to rescue her, into an immortal cat to torture him with his guilt for all eternity.
The Sandersons were soon found out by the Binx family and other Salemers, who had them hanged for all their crimes, but the spellbook provided them with a spell to be resurrected in case any virgin lits the Black Flame Candle on All Hallows Eve, setting into motion the events of the film. It's likely that upon their executions, the Sanderson went to Hell and Satan was friendly to them there, as Winnie would later remark that she enjoyed her time in Hell.
Three hundred years later, the Sandersons are resurrected by a naive Californian boy named Max Dennison and decide to resume their search for eternal life and youth, though they ultimately fail at his and die once more. During their search for more kids to suck their lives out, the Sandersons come across a cheerful and joking elderly man dressed as Satan, leading them to mistake him for their "master" and enter to his house, much to the annoyance of the man's wife, whom they mistake for "Medusa". They messed around with him until the man's wife kicks them out, leading Winnie to realize that such man wasn't their master due to him giving them candy bars.
Hocus Pocus 2[]
Satan made no appearance in the sequel. However, he is mentioned. That said, his history with Sanderson sisters was in truth, more complicated and heavily romanticized by Reverend Traske and Salem officials who resented them. The contact between Winifred and Satan was indirectly facilitated by Mother Witch who elected the former as the heir of Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy. Not only that, Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy came to existence as the pact between Satan and either Mother Witch or her predecessor.
Trivia[]
Though unconfirmed, it's possible that in the Hocus Pocus universe, Satan has a human form or resembles an old human man while still being of color red, because when Winifred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson come across the old man disguised as Satan, who was portrayed by the late Garry Marshall, they immediately mistake him for their "master" until they are kicked out of his house by his grumpy wife and Winnie comes to realize that he wasn't actually their master.
Ironically, despite Satan not actually appearing in the film and just being mentioned, the film's credits listed Garry Marshall's character as "Master Devil".
In the Halloween show Hocus Pocus: Villain Spelltacular at Walt Disney World, the Sanderson sisters worship Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty instead of Satan.
