Satan[1][2], also known as the "Archangel Gabriel", "The Holy Spirit", "Our True Savior" and simply "Gabriel", is the main antagonist of the 2021 analog horror web series The Mandela Catalogue.
A version of the Devil that successfully managed to gain control over mankind by appearing as a Doppelgänger of the Archangel Gabriel[3], he is the true original Alternate[4] that would spawn the rest of his species so they would plague humanity for the rest of history[1]. Acting as their leader, he sends out hoards of them to kill and replace humans as distorted, shapeshifted versions of themselves while he himself resorts to tricking and deceiving humans into carrying out his bidding in order to wipe out mankind completely.
He has been voiced by a FastHub text-to-speech program in "Overthrone", a Online Microsoft Sam text-to-speech program (Tetyys) in "Exhibition", with Kyle DeNigris (who also voiced Boozoo in The Walten Files) voicing him in Volume 4 until his departure from the crew. In Volume 5 he returned to being voiced by the Online Microsoft Sam Text-to-Speech program (Tetyys).
Biography[]
Biblical times[]
Satan’s origins are unknown. However, given who he is, it is presumed he is a fallen Angel who attempted to overthrow God and was banished to Hell, albeit that might not be the case at all. At some unknown point of time, Satan impersonated and presumably murdered the Archangel Gabriel.
The Original Sin & Alternate[]
Satan was likely directly responsible for the creation of the Forbidden Fruit, as his figure is briefly seen "glitching" a tree in the introductory scene of Volume 4, leaving it completely pitch black. Satan would then awaken the recently created Adam in the first night, calling him his son, and presumably replacing him with an Alternate.
The next night, Eve woke up and attempted to look at the stars she belovingly admired last night, only to be met with the Alternate Adam's face in the night skies, staring back at her and completely obscuring the night sky (possibly making Eve afflicted with Metaphysical Awareness Disorder/MAD).[2]
It's likely that after this encounter, Eve was deceived by Gabriel into eating the Fruit with Adam following soon after.[5] Although it is left very ambiguous whether these events happened as described in the Bible. During this time, it's shown in Volume 2 that he was in the form of the Serpent of Eden.
Noah's Message[]
Years later, it's implied that Satan had been attempting, or maybe even managed to successfully manipulate Noah into doing his bidding in the world. Though this wouldn't last long, as Noah would eventually realize the nature of the "Angel" and resisted his message, which is implied to having to do with the creation of the Ark, possibly meaning that Satan didn't want it to be built.
Enraged at this, Satan confronts Noah. He informs him that another creature will be put on the boat, one that Noah wouldn't realize was there until it was too late, would cause a subtle change in his mind, and would give him his "last message". This description is highly reminiscent of the Alternates that would go on to torment the human race for millennia to come, implying that this was one of the first sightings of an Alternate that wasn't Satan or Adam.[1] It can be presumed that Noah fell victim to the Alternate and was afflicted with M.A.D.
Finally Overthrowing God[]
Later, after taking the place of Gabriel, Satan goes to Nazareth, Middle East, to give a message to Mary, with a notable hint to his nature is shown when he has a frightening, reptilian face briefly before it is covered with a black square. He then visits Joseph when he was asleep, declaring that he would fool the shepherds and also learn what mankind feared. Appearing before the shepherds, Satan calls himself their “true savior”, finally removing the black square before his face warps, showcasing a pair of wide eyes and an unsettling, large grin, both showcasing his malicious intent. Following this, he tells someone (presumably either God or the viewer) that he deceived humanity before an unknown figure - speculated, though not confirmed to be Jesus Christ - laments that they are trapped in a tomb of infinite sand for the rest of eternity, most likely by Satan's hands while he tricks mankind into worshiping him as God.
Assuming this really is Jesus' speaking, this in itself leaves several horrifying theories, as either God himself rejected Jesus and deliberately left him to suffer, the replacement was so successful that Satan managed to trick the Almighty himself, or perhaps most disturbingly, the type of prison Jesus is trapped in is unable to be accessed by God.[3]
Fooling the Shepherd[]
One night, a shepherd loses the youngest lamb of his flock. He is saddened by this loss and asks God for forgiveness. Suddenly, Gabriel appears outside the shepherd's window and tells him that he has heard the shepherd's prayers. Afterwards, the shepherd asks Gabriel if he was the Holy Spirit, but Gabriel replies that the man spoke to him and now he is here. Then, the shepherd asks Gabriel if he has been forgiven, but Gabriel replies with "For what?" and moves aside to show to the shepherd that his lamb is alive and well. For some reason, though, the shepherd has somehow seen through the illusion and is distraught by it even further.
After meeting Gabriel, the shepherd meets a woman called Jane who wanted to ask to the shepherd if he had any leftover grains, since her crops had been ruined (presumably by Satan). They go to the fields and the shepherd gives her some of his grain. Afterwards, the shepherd asks Jane if there was something wrong with his lamb. Jane replies that the lamb was beautiful and that he is blessed. However, the shepherd doesn't believe her and says that the lamb is obviously unhealthy. Jane leaves the shepherd and tells him that she would love to show him her animals.
All of a sudden, the shepherd is brought to a desert and falls to the ground due to a metal ball attached to his ankles with chains. Then, the shepherd walks through the desert, but stops when a mouth opens up in the sand and tells him about how other shepherds have been fooled by the “angel”. Another mouth appears from the sand and reassures him that he's not the only one who has been tricked and that "it doesn't need to be this way".
Afterwards, the shepherd wakes up in a room and asks Jane where he is. Jane tells him that he is in her home and has been there for a while. Then, the shepherd says that "he" (referring to Gabriel) is here and that he can feel his presence. Jane doesn't understand what the shepherd is talking about and tells him that everyone has left the town and that they are the only ones who have remained. Then, Jane tells him to look at her. The shepherd looks at her and sees Gabriel looming over her. The shepherd covers his eyes and asks Jane if she is there. After he uncovers his eyes, he sees her dead on the ground. Then, the shepherd runs to his fields and sees that his lamb is now deformed into alien-like creature. While he is looking at the monstrosity that his lamb has become, Gabriel appears behind the shepherd and puts his hands around him, presumably killing him.
Involvement in the Crucifixion[]
In the Volume 333 post-credits scene, Satan is seen grinning near a statue of what appears to be the Crucifixion of Jesus, implying that he was somehow involved.
Easter Day[]
Three days after the Crucifixion, the day in which He was supposed to resurrect, Gabriel scared off the Roman guards guarding His tomb and opened its gate, prompting them to run away. The commotion calls the attention of three women, one of which being Mary Magdalene who notices that the tomb was open and enters. Inside, she doesn't find Christ, but Gabriel.
Gabriel whispers to her, causing her face to distort, before leaving. Mary, seemingly returning to normal, exits the cave and happily announces something, presumably the "return of their savior", to the others.
Present-Day[]
Background[]
For the next thousands of years, Satan masterminds the attacks on mankind leading to the rise of four major types of Alternates; Doppelgangers (Type 1), Detectable/Unspeakable (Type 2, which he is heavily implied to be the sole example of), Flawed Impersonators (Type 3), and Tulpas (Type 4). He also has connections to and may be the creator of another entity, the Intruder.
These beings presumably seek to wipe out humanity by employing psychological warfare on their victims. This causes the rise of Metaphysical Awareness Disorder (or M.A.D for short), a mental disease that almost always climaxes in the suicide of the victim.
1992 (TBA)[]
2009[]
At some point in the Modern Era, Satan gains an interest in Dave Lee, one of the technicians of Mandela County that was working with Thatcher Davis, deceiving him into following his advice under the false alias of "O'Brien".
He deceives Dave Lee into creating various technologies that indirectly help the Alternates, such as the Face Studio franchise, a software that is implied to have been seized by the Alternates in order to facilitate the shapeshifting process and the creation of Tulpas. He also speaks of a certain "offer" to have a position in the Mandela County Church to Dave should MandelaTECH ever shut down. It's unknown whether this offer was genuine and involved Dave joining Satan or not, but Dave initially refuses as he's "not a man of God".
Dave eventually accepts the offer and goes in front of the Mandela County Church in order to meet who he thought was but a mere human. But as his surroundings darken, he slowly comes to the realization that he had been talking to none other than Satan. Satan, in his Gabriel form, reveals his deception to Dave, telling him that he had everything figured out, yet somehow still managed to "follow the Shepherd". Disappointed in Dave, Satan punishes him by trying to afflict M.A.D to him by saying that his existence has meant nothing, and that Thatcher Davis is the next one to be deceived.
After Dave defiantly proclaims that Satan “isn’t real” and “won’t be able to accomplish anything”, Satan states that Dave has already done all of his bidding for him. Satan then laughs maniacally as he kills Dave by exploding his brain and gouging out his eyes, giving him a slow and painful death by bleeding.
The next day, the news report on Dave's death is interrupted by who appears to be Gabriel or the Intruder, showing instead the blank face of an Alternate followed by a link to a YouTube video depicting a rather weird retelling of Easter, and showing the text "NO MORE RUNNING AW-" before going back to normal.
Gabriel would then deceive Thatcher Davis by pretending to be his own intuition, asking if he hears "the screams", and that he should follow them, eventually resulting in his encounter with Adam Murray.
Personality[]
Satan, even surpassing his theological counterpart, embodies an extraordinary level of intelligence, cunning, and strategic prowess, effortlessly deceiving and manipulating people. Despite occasional near exposures of his secrets, he consistently manages to "repair the damage" and evade justice for his crimes.
Satan's adeptness in manipulation and deceit is so advanced that it is theorized he once managed to deceive God Himself. Fully aware of his immense intellect and skills, Satan takes great pride in them, often boasting about his achievements and derisively referring to his victims as "weak minds." His sadistic nature is evident in his chilling smile as he replaces Jesus, dooming humanity, and his maniacal laughter while killing Dave Lee.
In his early chronological appearances, Satan is seen with a mere smirk rather than his now-iconic twisted grin. Only after leading humanity away from God and sabotaging the Annunciation does his smile become more pronounced, suggesting that his ultimate victory and overthrow of God intensified his sadistic tendencies. This triumph may also explain his shift from a whisper-like tone to a more crackling and mocking one.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Immortality: Satan has witnessed the first days of the creation of the Universe and has continued existing ever after; without getting subject; by time or sickness.
- Shape-shifting: Much like Satan's creations, he is able to morph his own body; into that; of others or into an original form. Most notably, the appearance of the archangel, Gabriel and that; of a serpent, when he had deceived Adam and Eve.
- Voice-Mimicry: As an extension, Satan can mimic the voices and sounds of those he pleases as well as accents, as was seen in his time as O'Brien.
- Flight: Satan is able to fly, likely; due to his nature as a former angel.
- Darkening Presence: Every time Satan descends to Earth, his sole presence is capable of darkening his surroundings and the sky itself. This darkness should be comparable or even superior to the alternate Adam's; which is such that; it can even render the stars in the night sky completely obscured.
- Hivemind Leader: Satan serves as the Hivemind Leader for the Alternates, should they receive a piece of information, such as someone's fear, Satan will receive it as well and vice versa. As the Hivemind Leader, he should presumably be able to command and control the alternates, at will.
- Genius-Level Intellect: As was expected from Satan, the manipulator by excellence. He's shown manipulating multiple characters throughout the series with little to no difficulty, such as Noah, Dave Lee, and even presumably Jesus. As was showcased by his time as O'Brien, his manipulation abilities are such that he can pass as a regular human should he want to.
- Cosmic Awareness: Satan is assumed to be aware of some of the most unknowable secrets of the universe that; are beyond human comprehension; since he was the one that; possibly created M.A.D.; which is an "illness" that; consists in giving information "that; is not desired to know" and is an extremely ancient being; who has experienced the creation of the world. It's heavily; implied that; he was responsible for the creation of the Forbidden Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
- Psychological Warfare: It is heavily; implied that; like the alternates, Satan is able to afflict his victims with M.A.D through either psychological torture or a small whisper-like sound.
- Telekinesis: Satan was able to; gouged out Dave Lee's eyes, and blew his brain into flesh; without; even needing to touch him; implying that; he has this power.
- Supernatural Speed: Satan can run across long distances in a matter of seconds.
- Teleportation: In Satan's encounter; with Dave Lee, he is able to teleport himself short distances, as seen; when he had appeared behind him as he was "melting" his eyes.

Trivia[]
- "Unspeakable", the name for the Type 2 Alternates as of 2005, might be in reference to the phrase "Speak of the Devil, and he shall appear/come".
- The website Alex Kister used to simulate Satan's voice is fasthub.net, the same text-to-speech site that was used for Tara the Android.
- The first time we see the Archangel Gabriel (commonly agreed upon to be the actual Archangel Gabriel), he is surrounded by light and has noticeable wings. The second time (commonly agreed to be Satan in disguise), he is surrounded by darkness and has no wings whatsoever, referencing Satan's status as a Fallen Angel and to one of Lucifer's aliases: the Prince of the Darkness.
- Kyle DeNigris elected to leave the role at the wake of the controversy surrounding Alex Kister. Kyle admitted that even if the allegations were fake or exaggerated, he would still refuse to continue voicing the character by implying that Alex had talked poorly about him and his friends behind his back.
