Satan is the main antagonist of the animated comedy series, Smiling Friends. He is the sadistic yet immature master of Hell and the arch-nemesis of God.
He briefly falls on hard times due to his unhealthy habits, including a vaping addiction, and is therefore unable to rule the dimension properly. However, thanks to Charlie Dompler incidentally fueling his anger by criticizing him, he regains his motivation to torture souls.
He also has a daughter named Brittney, whom he uses to gain control over rich mortals every 100 years, including an attempt on Mr. Boss.
He is voiced by the series' co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices DJ Spit, Jason, Mip, Gnarly, Mr. Peanut, and Mr. Landlord in the same series.
Appearance[]
He is a gigantic, monstrous, demonic humanoid figure with a muscular, crimson-skinned body, prominent veins, and a grotesque skull-like face. He has large, curved black horns protruding from his head, and long, pointed ears. He has a pair of massive bat-like wings folded behind his back, and he wears black pants.
Personality[]
Ironically for a typically fiendish character, Satan seems like a casual and laid-back individual at first when talking to Charlie, but his inability to take criticism can quickly reveal his true nature as a malevolent, short-tempered sadist who revels in the pain of others. Tired of his tedious, eternal job as the ruler of Hell, he becomes somewhat lazy and depressed, spending his days playing video games and ordering fast food, causing Hell to literally freeze over due to his mellow and unmotivated state. These addictions of his developed from Satan using them as a way to escape from his issues rather than confronting them.
Even in his more relaxed, melancholy mood, Satan is capable of being pretty sarcastic or irritable, such as when he replies to the deliveryman's "Happy holidays" with a passive-aggressive "Merry Christmas," implying he could be annoyed by modern political correctness. He also becomes irrationally upset at a missing straw and at minor suggestions for self-improvement. Similarly, Satan shows his petty and argumentative nature in squabbling with Mr. Boss about where his property begins and ends in Hell before storming off: "Whatever, man."
Along with hobbies such as vaping and gaming, which are more befitting of a teenager than an eternal tyrant, Satan shows himself to be very childish and dishonorable when he doesn't keep his end of the deal with Charlie, instead deciding to torture him for all eternity simply for being given some constructive criticism and being made angry. Satan also has a theatrical side, exclaiming "Blast, foiled again!" when Charlie's rescued by God as if he's a supervillain.
Biography[]
In the episode "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back", Charlie is killed by a falling tree, and afterwards, he is sent to Hell. He is informed by the Plump Demon that Hell has frozen over because Satan has been "down in the dumps" and poorly managing the underworld. Charlie figures he can help the devil because of his job as a Smiling Friend. He eventually reaches Satan's fortress in the bottom circle of Hell. Upon entering his room, Satan is wildly unimpressive; while playing the video game Rust and using the messaging app Discord on his computer, he mundanely complains about piling emails, paperwork, and the lack of payment for his job (impossibly, he only gets his paycheck at the end of eternity).
Charlie makes a deal with the Devil to bring him back to life if he can make Satan smile. Satan interrupts the conversation when a delivery of fast food arrives, but despite dismissing the delivery person politely, he complains that they forgot the straw as usual. Charlie points out Satan's unhealthy habits when he starts vaping, which enrages the lord of Hell, and he summons demons to torture Charlie, insisting that he can willfully quit his addictions at any moment. Satan oversees Charlie's torment and laughs with sadistic joy. Charlie points out that Satan's enjoyment of his suffering made him smile, and thus the bargain is technically fulfilled. However, Satan refuses to let him leave because he was angered and declares that he will torture Charlie forever. Suddenly, God bursts through the roof and flies off with Charlie, causing Satan to lament being foiled again as Hell returns to its fiery state.
In the episode "Erm, The Boss Finds Love?", Satan sends his daughter Brittney to marry Mr. Boss so he could take over Smiling Friends after she drains his life. He also sends her every 100 years to do the same to other influential, mortal men. He fails when his daughter commits suicide and, due to the marriage contract, Mr. Boss now owns 1/4th of Hell. He is seen after the end credits arguing with Mr. Boss over property lines.

Trivia[]
- Upon God's rescue of Charlie, Satan said that he is being foiled again, indicating that this is not the first time God foiled his plan.
- Satan is the first client who also doubles as the episode's antagonist.
- He is the second antagonist in the series to be animated in 3D, the first being the Forest Demon.
- Like the Forest Demon, his voice is pitched down.
- Regarding Satan's CGI:
- He was rigged and partially animated by Man of Motion/Nathan Ayres.[1]
- His animation was led by Andy Garcia.
- He was modeled and textured by Ashley Dickens.[2]
- In "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back," Satan serves as a foil to Charlie.
- Like Satan, Charlie is also feeling unmotivated, demoralized, and stuck in a cycle of quick dopamine hits while scorning a job he usually likes; unlike Satan, however, Charlie manages to get his happiness back and remembers how fulfilling his work can be. This was God's plan for him precisely, as by confronting the Devil sharing his attitude, Charlie confronted his own problems.
- Satan is also introduced the same way Charlie is in this episode - playing Rust on his PC while eating junk food - and they share a voice actor (Zach voices Satan with his normal cadence as well, only pitch-shifted, making him sound the most like Charlie out of any character in the series).
- As befits the literal Devil himself, Satan personifies nearly each of the Seven Deadly Sins. Only Envy is notably absent:
- Lust: There are a box of tissues next to his trash pile and many off-white stained ones left around the room, indicating that masturbation is one of his addictions.
- Sloth: He wastes away playing video games in a nest of refuse due to losing all motivation in doing his job.
- Gluttony: He's addicted to fast food and has scattered soda cans, bottles, and discarded containers in his room.
- Pride: Satan takes umbrage when Charlie merely tries to give him some helpful feedback on his terrible habits, purely out of insecurity and ego.
- Wrath: He has a short and testy temper in that he grumbles at missing straws in his delivery orders, and he sarcastically retorts "Merry Christmas" to those who say "Happy Holidays." His anger is most prominent when Charlie criticizes him for vaping; he flies into a rage, tries to torture him, and reneges on their deal out of pure spite.
- Greed: At the end of "Erm, The Boss Finds Love?", he irately quibbles with Mr. Boss just so he can claim slightly more land, and uses his daughter to steal from powerful men on Earth.
- Satan's domain in the lowest ring of Hell, where damned souls get frozen in ice, is a reference to Cocytus from Dante Alighieri's Inferno. There, the Devil is a prisoner of his own transgressions, and in "Charlie Dies," Satan is stuck in an endless cycle of chasing fleeting pleasures by his own fault.
