NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of Lucifer from the Netflix series. The mainstream version can be found here: Lucifer (Archie comics).

Have I not given you every worthwhile thing? Beauty, strength, power above all other mortals? The truth is, Sabrina, you have loved the power I have given you. You've reveled in it. Your wrath, when you've shown it, has been magnificent.
~ Lucifer to his daughter, Sabrina Spellman.
Lilith knows her place. Her purpose. To serve. Here's yours. You will blow the horn of Gabriel for me, opening the Gates to the Pit for the aristocracy of Hell, who will attend your coronation. You will wear the crown. You will sit in the throne. And then, once we have danced the Mephisto Waltz, the world will be remade in Hell's image. All the demon hordes will be freed, and you and I will rule over Hell on Earth, together, for all eternity.
~ Lucifer to Sabrina.

Lucifer Morningstar, otherwise known as Satan or The Dark Lord, is the overarching antagonist of the Netflix original series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is the master of all witches and the embodiment of all evil seeking to corrupt all of humanity.

Lucifer was an archangel cast out of Heaven, falling to Earth at what would become Greendale. In the wilderness, Lilith found his wounded form, healed him, and pledged her service. He eventually embraced his goat-ish beast form and became known as Satan or the Dark Lord, worshipped by witches through soul-binding pacts. After refusing to honor a deal with Lilith, she stabbed him with the Spear of Longinus and banished him from hell to wander Earth.

He was portrayed by Luke Cook (who also portrayed AJ Novak in S.W.A.T.) and several other members of the crew while possessing their characters bodies.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

He was kind at first. Gentle. We'd spend our days near the place where he'd fallen and hit the Earth. Where thousands and thousands of years later, ye old town of Greendale was founded. The more time passed since the Fall, the more He... He turned into this... thing of darkness.
~ Lilith

He was created by God as the angel Lucifer Morningstar and lived among many other angels, however, he was eventually sent down from heaven and was dubbed a fallen angel. A weakened angel soon encountered an evil being known as Lilith of whom nursed him back to health in exchange to rule over hell alongside him.

During the Victorian era, Satan made a deal with the vain and narcissistic young man Dorian Gray and granted him the gift of eternal life in exchange for loyalty to witches and warlocks. Over a century later, he appointed Edward Spellman as the High Priest in the Church of the Night and granted the wish of he and his human wife to give birth to a baby girl, Sabrina Spellman. Satan decided that Sabrina should be the girl to carry out the prophecy to take over the world and allow Satan to reign over it.

Sometime later Edward and his wife were killed and Faustus Blackwood was appointed as the new High Priest the latter of whom promised to bring Sabrina to walk in the path of darkness and fulfill her destiny. He also appeared to a young Harvey Kinkle in the Greendale Mines and traumatized the boy for years to come. While Harvey tried to claim it was merely a bad dream Sabrina knew that what he saw was something far more severe.

Season 1[]

Throughout season one, Satan merely appears in the background and acts as a constant overarching presence often discussing to his wife and Father Blackwood the fate of Sabrina Spellman among many other witch-related traditions and events. He is obsessed with getting Sabrina to sign her name in his book and constantly pesters his most loyal subjects into achieving this goal. He finally succeeds in this endeavor when his wife summoned the Greendale 13 back from the dead and causes a massive plague of which Sabrina is unable to end without the extra power gained from signing the book something she gets pressured into. With her newfound power Sabrina manages to stop the attack but left both he and Madame Satan with their goals finally succeeding.

Season 2[]

To fulfill the Dark Lord's prophecy (which allows Satan to walk the Earth in his true form and open the Gates of Hell), Lilith manipulates Sabrina to embark on a series of "Perversions of Christ’s miracles"; curing blindness, exorcisms, even sacrificing her own doppelgänger. The prophecy indicates Lucifer needs a "half‑witch" to act as his herald.

After Sabrina completes the prophecy by killing her doppelganger, Lucifer reappears in Greendale, first as a horned beast, then transforms into his true form, shocking Dorian Gray and the Church of Night. He orders Sabrina to sound Gabriel's horn, open Hell's gates, and prepare to crown her Queen of Hell so they can reshape the world together.

He also reveals that Sabrina is his biological daughter and he used Nicholas Scratch to seduce her. In the past, Sabrina's mortal father (Edward Spellman) had enlisted Lucifer's help to conceive her. She is "part mortal, part witch, part infernal", the ultimate catalyst of his prophecy. However, Sabrina refuses to be his herald.

Sabrina then plan to bind Satan, together with Lilith, her family, and her human friends, who used runes and sigils to keep the Gathes of Hell locked. At Lucifer's coronation dance ("The Mephisto Waltz"), Sabrina and her allies activate the Acheron Configuration and binds him, but he manages to breaks free. Lilith shifts tactics, declaring only a human vessel can hold him. Nick volunteers and sacrifices himself by hosting the Dark Lord's spirit. Lilith crowns herself Queen of Hell, claims her throne and leads Nick (now containing Satan) back to Hell.

Season 3[]

Although trapped, Lucifer occasionally communicates through Nick. Sabrina tries to expel him and return him to Hell. Lucifer's hold over Hell became destabilized. Caliban, a clay-made Prince of Hell, competes with Sabrina for the throne.

Once Sabrina frees Nick, Lucifer escapes his imprisonment and returns to Hell. He was furious with Lilith for betraying him and refuses to acknowledge her as Queen. He calls her a traitor and threatens her with eternal punishment. Lilith desperately pleads for her life and offers him a peace offering; she is pregnant with his child.

With Hell's throne contested, the coven in Greendale switches patronage from Lucifer to the Greek goddess Hecate, recovering their magical powers without needing the Dark Lord.

Season 4[]

Lilith's pregnancy triggers a brutal conflict in Hell. Caliban's curse nearly kills the baby, prompting Lilith to infuse mortal women's protection and secretly give birth, only to later kill her own son to prevent Lucifer from claiming him. In retaliation, Lucifer curses Lilith, stripping her immortality and banishing her to wander Earth as a mortal. Meanwhile, Lucifer learns of Sabrina Morningstar's death (her doppelgänger) via Lilith. Enraged, he starts flexing power in Greendale, using Caliban and miners as foot soldiers to pressure Sabrina Spellman.

Lucifer later appears to Harvey's dad in two forms; a angelic guise and his newer version at the "Battle of the Bands". He orchestrates a ritual through a rock band called "Satanic Panic", promising fame in exchange for darkness and appears to judge the contest's outcome. Sabrina and friends then resurrect a murder victim to derail the satanic ritual. Lucifer, branding her a "false daughter", retreats to Hell humiliated.

Struggling with split attention, Lucifer becomes scattered. Lilith seizes this moment to retrieves the Spear of Longinus; the only weapon that can kill or weaken immortals. In the series finale, Lilith stabs Lucifer twice with the Spear, drinks his celestial blood and banishes him from the Court of Hell, casting him out to wander Earth stripped of former power.

Appearance[]

Lucifer has two primary forms. The first being a horrifying figure with a goat-like head and lanky limbs which appears to be covered in fur. His second form is that of an ordinary man with curly brown hair, pale skin and dressed in classy, revealing clothes.
