~ Jimmy/Saul in a 2003 commercial advertising his business.

Saul Goodman Productions are supporting characters in the crime drama series Better Call Saul, the prequel to Breaking Bad.

They're a low-budget advertising agency consisting of three film students from UNM and founded by Jimmy "Saul Goodman" McGill. Outside of commercials, the crew helps Jimmy with his various cons and schemes.

Members[]

Jimmy "Saul Goodman" McGill[]

James Morgan "Jimmy" McGill (portrayed by Bob Odenkirk, who also voiced The Devil in Hell and Back and Chase Kaminsky in Bob’s Burgers), aka Saul Goodman, is the crew's owner and producer, and a corner-cutting lawyer. He uses the crew to film his low-budget and cheesy commercials, and occasionally uses their assistance for his schemes and publicity stunts.

Marshall Dixon[]

Marshall Joseph "Joey" Dixon (portrayed by Josh Fadem), aka Camera Guy, is a University of New Mexico film student who works as the crew's camera operator. He handles the camera work for Jimmy's projects. By 2004, Marshall also teaches a film class and works in the school's audiovisual equipment center.

Marshall is rude, jaded, and self-centered. He often disrespects and argues with Jimmy, mainly over money. Despite this, he helps create quality work for him and is genuinely passionate about filmmaking, as he won't let anyone touch his camera.

Phil[]

Phil (portrayed by Julian Bonfiglio), aka Sound Guy, is a University of New Mexico film student who works as the boom operator for the crew. He captures sound during filming.

Phil is a quiet and reliable member of the crew. He also shows some concern for Jimmy in "Expenses," calling him "boss" and asking him if he plans to catch the bus when he sits dejected on a curb.

Sherry[]

Sherry (portrayed by Hayley Holmes), aka Drama Girl and Make-Up Girl, is a makeup artist and musical actress who works with Jimmy and his film crew as the makeup artist, and is also a student at the College of Fine Arts in the University of New Mexico.

Sherry is the most eager, creative, and empathetic of the crew. She even offers up her own share of some money to a forlorn Jimmy when it's clear he's struggling financially.

Kim Wexler[]

Kimberly "Kim" Wexler (portrayed by Rhea Seehorn) is an attorney and Jimmy's lover who temporarily acted as a director, producer, and makeup artist for the crew in Season 6.

History[]

Season 1[]

Jimmy hires Marshall and Phil to film him removing a billboard he put up, something he was forced to do by Howard Hamlin since he blatantly copied HHM's branding. As this happens, Jimmy hires a worker to "fall" from the platform, whom he valiantly "saves." Marshall captures every second and the video airs on TV, thus bringing Jimmy heaps of publicity as Albuquerque's newest "hero."

Season 2[]

Jimmy takes Marshall and Phil to film a fake testimonial from Geraldine Strauss, an elderly client of the Sandpiper Crossing case, where she spins a made-up sob story about losing money to Sandpiper Crossing for Jimmy's Davis & Main commercial.

Later, they film more ads for Jimmy's practice, including one with a fake WWII veteran named Fudge at an Air Force base, having successfully tricked Air Force captain Bauer into leaving them alone and unsupervised at a B-29 Superfortress. They later shoot another at an elementary school with an American flag behind Jimmy, with Sherry being newly hired. When they are caught trespassing at the school, Jimmy lies to the administrators by falsely claiming he's making a documentary about Rupert Holmes, an "alumnus", and they manage to avoid getting kicked out.

Season 3[]

After losing his law license, Jimmy decides to make commercials to earn some money. When one carpet store doesn't bite, the crew instead decides to advertise themselves as "Saul Goodman Productions" via their own commercial. After finishing a spot for Duke City Recliners, Jimmy takes most of the proceeds for himself since he paid for airtime out of his own pocket, much to Marshall's dismay.

At a music shop called ABQ In Tune, the owners have no interest in paying anything for Jimmy's commercial, which Jimmy then decides to shoot for free. The day after, Jimmy asks for a down payment of $6,500 from the owners to continue with 7 more commercials, but even though the free commercial actually brought them more customers, they refuse. In retribution, Jimmy fakes a slip-and-fall injury (filmed by Marshall) by "slipping" on a conveniently placed loose drumstick to shake the owners down and force them to pay up.

Season 4[]

Jimmy uses the crew to help create fake evidence that keeps his friend Huell Babineaux out of jail by framing him as a hometown hero beloved by the Church. Phil mixes a series of CDs with church organ music, and the other crew members answer calls from the ADA to make it seem like the calls are coming from locations in Huell's hometown; the con works and effectively forces Suzanne Ericsen's hand.

Later, Marshall films a memorial ceremony for Jimmy's brother Chuck McGill, whom the UNM's new library has been named in honor of. They conduct an interview with Howard Hamlin. The two thank Howard for his generosity on behalf of the school, only to learn that Howard is just a guest and can't take credit for the donation. Meanwhile, Kim Wexler and the crew spread the news around the party that Jimmy anonymously donated the money used to build the library.

Season 5[]

The crew pretends to be TV journalists to ambush Bill Oakley at the courthouse, grilling him about a case that he's never even heard about; there, Saul swoops into the scene to pose as a defense attorney to use and double down on his new alias: "I'm Saul Goodman." They also film fake testimonials against Mesa Verde which Jimmy uses to blackmail them, particularly former bank president Don Wachtell.

Season 6[]

Jimmy hires the crew to photograph a staged "bribery" concerning the leader of an upcoming Sandpiper mediation (Rand Casimiro, who is instead portrayed by Lenny) as part of his and Kim's scheme to take down Howard Hamlin. After Jimmy discovers Casimiro broke his arm, they need to shoot it again. Marshall is annoyed because Kim damages his camera tape to use in the fake photo. After taking the pictures, Marshall develops them for Jimmy and Kim, who rush them to Genidowski, one of Jimmy's accomplices and Howard's so-called "private investigator."

Filmaker Training[]

Presumably after the events of Better Call Saul, Marshall, Phil, and Sherry would go on to create "Filmmaker Training," a series of videos of informational tips and tricks for filmmaking.

Trivia[]

  • Initially, Jimmy only referred to his other crew members by the functions they perform.
  • Regarding Marshall Dixon's name:
    • His last name comes from an article shown on AMC's story sync for "Hero."[1]
    • In a 2022 supplemental web series "Filmmaker Training," Joey is referred to as Marshall, having been renamed to this.[2]
    • During an AMA on Reddit[3] on July 25, 2022, Josh Fadem said about his character's name conflict:
      • "The golden question in the filmcrew-verse. Okay here's what I know to recap. season 1 the prop dept named him Joey Dixon in a newspaper prop article, people zoomed in and could see the name. Named after the editors. Camera Guy was never addressed as Joey on screen. Vince said in a podcast they call him Kid Kubrick in the writer's room. Ariel Levine named us after the department heads so Marshall is what he goes by in that series... If I had to piece it together with my logic I would say his birth name is probably Marshall Joseph Dixon. When he was a kid he went by "joey" so that was probably an early year at college when the newspaper interviewed him about the billboard guy, so he gave the name Joey. Then he realized Marshall is more unique and distinguished and will benefit his filmmaking career so some point in college he started going by Marshall. I went to high school with a guy named Rob who's real first name was Hunter, then he grew up to become a camera man and started going by Hunter when he moved to LA... good guy"
