Villain Overview

The saw is family.
~ Drayton Sawyer's famous quote.

The Sawyer Family are the main antagonists of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

They are a dangerous cannibalistic family in Texas county.

History[]

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)[]

In The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Drayton was the owner of a gas station, Nubbins was a hitchhiker, and Leatherface killed Kirk, Pam, and Jerry when each of them entered his house. He later killed Franklin and chased his sister Sally around, until Drayton took her to his house. Grandpa initially appeared as a corpse, but when Sally's finger was cut and Grandpa licked the blood, he was revealed to be alive.

Drayton said he doesn't take pleasure in killing, instead having his younger brothers do the killing for him. They tried to have Grandpa kill Sally, but he keeps missing her with the hammer due to his old age. Nubbins and Leatherface then tried to help him, but Sally took advantage of the opportunity and escaped from them. Nubbins was killed when an 18-wheeler ran him over, and Leatherface was hit with a wrench by the driver, causing him to cut his leg on his chainsaw. Sally then hopped in the back of the truck and laughed maniacally as she finally managed to escape.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)[]

12 years later, in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the cannibals all moved to a new underground house in an abandoned carnival ground. Drayton was winning awards for making the best chili (unbeknownst to them, he used human meat in the chili), and there were more mysterious chainsaw killings, by Leatherface, though no one discovered them.

When Stretch played the tape recording the deaths of Buzz and Rick, at the hands of Leatherface, on the radio, Drayton sent Leatherface and Chop Top to kill her and her coworker LG. Chop Top mortally wounded LG, but Leatherface fell in love with Stretch, and didn't kill her, telling Chop Top that she was dead (through strange vocal noises, as he does not talk). Eventually, Lieutenant Lefty Enright attacked Drayton with his chainsaw and dueled Leatherface, impaling him with the chainsaw on the table. Drayton set off a grenade, killing himself, Leatherface, Grandpa, and Lefty. Chop Top escaped, as he was chasing after Stretch, who later killed him by slashing him with the chainsaw.

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)[]

Leatherface becomes involved with a new clan in the Sawyer family, who treat him better than the previous family unit.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995)[]

The Sawyer family, now known as the Slaughter family, are revealed to be part of a top secret Illuminati program with its purpose to spread fear and terror. The Slaughters seemingly fail the program, which is then shut down and leaving their final fates unknown. This is only exclusive to Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, with this plot point never carried on or referenced in other Texas Chainsaw Massacre works.

Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)[]

In an alternate direct sequel to the original film, a majority of the Sawyers are murdered by the local townsfolk in retribution for their serial killings.

Leatherface (2017)[]

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)[]

In another alternate direct sequel to the original, it is revealed that Leatherface left the clan and moved to an abandoned orphanage in another part of Texas where he kept a low profile for five decades. With the Cook and Grandpa presumably dying due to the large time gap, Leatherface is the last remaining known blood relative of the Sawyers. He ends up going up against a group of youngers are buying up properties in the desolate town he has resided in for half a century. Once done dispatching them, he returns to the old Sawyer home.

Other Versions[]

Slaughter Family[]

The Slaughter Family serve as the main antagonists of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, a quasi-remake and a continuation to the original film. They are working with Illuminati. It's formed with brothers Leatherface (again), Vilmer Slaughter, W.E. Slaughter and Vilmer's lover, Darla, as its main members.

Hewitt Family[]

The Hewitt Family is the 2003 remake timeline version of Sawyer Family, making their debut in the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and serves as the main antagonists in the remake timeline. In this remake version, Leatherface is adopted by Hewitt Family instead of related to them by blood. He is also seen taking off his skin masks, which never happened in the original series. Besides Leatherface, the Hewitts also includes his adoptive mother Luda Mae Hewitt, his uncle Monty, his older brother/"uncle" known as Sheriff Winston Hoyt (real name: Charlton "Charlie" Hewitt Jr.) who is the head of the family.

There are also three other members, whose roles have never been explained. They are:

  • Leatherface's apparent sister Henrietta.
  • The Tea Lady, a morbidly obese, older woman obsessed with tea, who lives with Henrietta in a small trailer on the Hewitt property.
  • A possible nephew to Leatherface named Jedidiah, a little boy who does not take part in his family's evil exploits (amusingly, this is the first name of Leatherface in the original timeline).

Trivia[]

  • Tex, Tinker and Alfredo from Sawyer Members II are counterparts of Drayton Sawyer.
    • Tex is the cook.
    • Tinker is a truck driver.
    • Alfredo is the owner of Last Chance Gas Station.
  • Boss Sawyer was portrayed by the late Gunnar Hansen, who also portrayed the original Leatherface.
