NOTE: This article is about the original Scar from the 1994 movie. The 2019 remake version can be found here.
Villain Overview

Long live the king.
~ Scar showing his true nature to his brother Mufasa before throwing him off the side of the gorge to the stampede to his death — his most infamous quote.

Askari, better known as Scar, is the main antagonist of Disney's The Lion King franchise.

He is the younger brother of Mufasa and uncle and arch-nemesis of Simba. The former leader of the Lion Guard, his desire to rule Pride Rock drove him to enact a regicidal plot to kill both his brother and nephew and usurp the throne.

In other media, he is a cameo character in House of Mouse, the main antagonist of the video game adaptation of the first movie, a recurring antagonist in The Lion King: Simba's Mighty Adventure, and a major antagonist in Kingdom Hearts 2.

Roles

Scar serves as the main antagonist of Disney's animated 1994 feature film The Lion King, the posthumous overarching antagonist of its 1998 sequel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, the overarching antagonist of both the 2004 prequel/parallel film The Lion King 1½ and the animated television series The Lion Guard (serving as the posthumous overarching antagonist of Season 1 and most of Season 3 and the main antagonist of Season 2 and the Season 3 premiere "Battle for the Pride Lands"), and a cameo character in The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa.

Voices

  • In the original film, he was voiced by Jeremy Irons, who also played Simon Gruber in Die Hard with a Vengeance, Profion in Dungeons & Dragons, Alan Rikkin in Assassin's Creed, Rodrigo Borgia in The Borgias, Humbert Humbert in the 1998 film adaptation of Lolita, John Tuld in Margin Call, and Ozymandias in the HBO series Watchmen. In the original film's Korean dub, he was voiced by Byung-Kwan Kim and the musical part was dubbed by Sung-hoon Lee. These two Korean voice actors also got together as Judge Claude Frollo.
  • In the 1998 sequel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and the game Simba's Mighty Adventure, he was voiced by Jim Cummings, who was his second singing voice in the first film (after Jeremy Irons blew out his deep baritone voice at one point) and also voiced Jacques from Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island released that same year. He also voiced Ed.
  • In the Kingdom Hearts franchise, he was voiced by James Horan, who also played Skull Face in Metal Gear Solid V.
  • In The Lion Guard, he was voiced by David Oyelowo, who also played Steven Jacobs in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Agent Kallus in Star Wars Rebels.

Appearance

Well, as far as brains go, I got the lion's share, but when it comes to brute strength… I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool.
~ Scar remarking on his poor genetics despite his high intelligence.

Scar is a scraggly lion, but stands eye to eye with Mufasa and Simba, making him tall, otherwise bulky, like they are. He has sharp features and is a gangly lion, thanks to poor genes, with orange-brown fur and yellow eyes with striking green irises. He has a silky black mane, elbow tufts, a goatee beard and his claws are always extended. He also has a pink scar over his left eye, earning him his name. He also speaks with a British accent. Despite his poor genetics, Scar is surprisingly strong, as he held his own very well against the much younger and more powerfully built (yet likely far less experienced) Simba during their final battle.

When he was younger, Scar, back then known as Askari, appeared to be much more buff and his mane was shorter. He didn't have his trademark scar until he got it from the Strange Cobra.

As a ghost, Scar appeared as a sentient flame with his face. His mane was still black (possibly because it was made of smoke) and his eyes and even his scar glowed bright yellow.

Personality

Mufasa: Don't turn your back on me, Scar.
Scar: Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps you shouldn't turn your back on me.
~ Scar provokes his brother Mufasa by telling him not to turn his back on him, and foreshadowing his intentions.

As a young lion, Askari was the leader of the Lion Guard who protected the Pride Lands from danger. At the time, Askari proved to be a good leader and constantly followed his duties and was faithful, though had a lust for more power and attention. Someday, he met a Strange Lion and Askari was attacked and poisoned by his Strange Cobra. The venom brought out Askari's desire for power, his greediness, his jealousy and hatred for Mufasa. However, the bite and resulting venom only removes moral restraints and amplifies negative traits and desires.

The venom did not create his evil instincts, but revealed them, not to mention he has shown taking great pleasure in what he did both in the original film and in the series itself, so Scar is not tragic in the slightest. After double-crossing and slaughtering the lion, he reported to Mufasa, spinning the narrative in his favor to make him look like a hero, only to be teased by his older brother with the nickname of "Scar", which makes him give up the search for a cure for the venom given by the cobra despite the fact he knew the existence of such a cure, showing Scar's lack of forgiveness to his older brother and pettiness.

As an adult, Scar is a cunning, sarcastic and narcissistic lion with a cultured and elegant demeanor, and a wry and cynical wit. However, even with his evil and deceiving ways, he prefers to run rather than fight, though if cornered Scar has shown the ability to hold his own as seen in his last fight with Simba. He was somewhat of a spoiled brat, believing because he is king, he can do whatever he wants.

Scar is filled with loathing and disgust for his brother and nephew, and most likely everybody against him. He doesn’t care much about the hyenas and seems to view them only as tools and weapons to use for his own gain, which ultimately resulted in his demise when he tried to blame his crimes on them. His loathing of his older sibling is proved when he instituted a rule against saying Mufasa's name in his presence. When he heard the name of Mufasa, he becomes furious, showing a wrathful side to himself.

Scar has also proven to be a coward. He didn't have the guts to kill Mufasa in a fight and had to have him and Simba put in a risky situation so it can make it easier for Scar to kill him without a fight. But years later after having Mufasa slaughtered and thinking the hyenas slaughtered Simba, his nephew returned after learning what Scar did to the Pride Lands, and just when Scar had the upper hand on Simba and revealed he had his brother slaughtered, making Simba completely furious as Scar flees like a coward one more time and begs Simba to let him live, and Scar finally fights Simba back, as he is very desperate to stay as a king, and able to jump on him since he blinded him, hoping he can have him slaughtered quick but fails and eventually got defeated and crucified by the hyenas for blaming them to save himself.

When he was king of the Pride Lands, Scar is very shiftless because he does not even bother to try to take his responsibilities seriously as Mufasa did, leaving the Hyena Clan to do the hunting and letting both them and the lions to starve without wanting to move somewhere else at the same time a severe drought was occurring in the Pride Lands. This makes the Pride Lands fall into a wasteland. Scar also was despised by all of his subjects because of this, even the hyenas complained Mufasa was a better king. This shiftlessness comes from Scar flaunting the title of king only for the power and privileges and when he finds out that it requires real work on his part, he has less than zero interest for that and prefers chewing bones in his cave. His conceitedness also blinds him from seeing his inability to rule decently.

Scar is also shown to be very antipathetic and intolerant of failure, criticizing the hyenas for their failure to kill Simba, even though it wasn't their fault, and infuriatingly throwing them out after they made the mistake of mentioning his brother, Mufasa, of who Scar was extremely jealous. Scar's treatment of the hyenas was bad, seeing them only as valuables pawns he could use to help take over the kingdom. He did not hesitate to call them publicly "tick" or criticize them for the slightest thing.

Nevertheless, Scar is also very sophisticated, charismatic, and persuasive, able to rally the hyenas to his cause and inspire fanatical loyalty from Zira and her pride of lionesses. He retained his manipulative side after returning as a spirit; using his charismatic persona to inspire the Outlanders to help him have Simba and the Lion guard slaughtered and control the rest of the Pride Lands.

He is also shown to be highly intelligent and brilliant, able to manipulate conversations and situations to his advantage with relative ease. Scar also proved to be extremely sadistic and merciless, convincing his own nephew, Simba, that he was responsible for the death of his father, Mufasa, and later going on to taunt him that he himself was responsible for Mufasa's demise actually, which also led to his demise. Scar is also a hypocrite, begging Simba to spare him because they were in the same family, completely ignoring the fact he killed his older brother in cold blood. What's more, He tells Janja not to run like a coward forgetting the fact that he himself did that when Simba chased him.

Upon his return as a ghost in The Lion Guard, Scar became more chaotic in nature, as he was willing to break the Circle of Life and take over the entire Pride Lands by turning it into chaos as revenge for his defeat. And what’s more, he becomes more sadistic; gleefully attempting mass murder to get revenge on Simba and the rest of the Pride Lands. He tries to have the new Lion guard killed despite the fact that they are young children. He even has a hot temper that's worse than before when his minions fail him. If his allies show any sign of failure, cowardice, idiocy, or weakness, he will fly into a horrible rage. His fury only rises when his multiple plots are foiled by his grand-nephew, Kion, who he harbors a special loathing for. His hate for Simba has grown much stronger as he uses his army to have him killed many times.

Even when they meet for the first time in years, he enjoys mocking his nephew reminding him how easily he fooled Simba in the past to break his sprit. He is even willing to scare the Pridelanders and assure them that their lives will be doomed. He also attenpted to have Kion use his roar on a volcano so it will cause an eruption that will devastate the Pride Lands and slay many animals in the process just for sadistic pleasure.

In the end, Scar has no concept of forgiveness nor compassion towards others, caring only for himself, and has no understanding of family, clearly shown when he is shocked and dumbfounded when Kion forgives him for his crimes and calls upon the Great Kings of the Past to judge Scar instead rather than eliminating the wicked spirit in loathing. His evil actions are the whole reason why Simba gets really stressed out and paranoid in the second film becoming over protetive or Kirara and not trusting Kovu.

The Lion King: Six New Adventures

Young Taka/Scar

In the non-canon novel series The Lion King: Six New Adventures, Scar's real name is Taka, which is Swahili for "dirt", "trash", or "want".

In A Tale of Two Brothers, which takes place many years before the events of The Lion King, an adolescent Taka is annoyed that his older brother Mufasa is chosen to be the heir to the throne. He is first seen along with Mufasa watching their father King Ahadi save a mandrill named Rafiki from three young hyenas named Shenzi, Banzai and Ed. Later at Pride Rock, Mufasa is almost attacked by a cobra, but Rafiki is able to get the cobra to leave in peace. Afterwards, Rafiki smells Taka's scent, thus meaning that he had put the cobra in Pride Rock to get it to attack Mufasa.

Taka is later annoyed when Ahadi breaks his promise to go hunting with him, choosing to solve the drought problems in the Pride Lands instead. Taka wanders off to talk to Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, who tells him that if Mufasa were to be made to look like a failure to Ahadi, then Taka himself will look good in comparison and take the throne.

Taka later tricks his brother into going down to the waterhole, where a Cape buffalo named Boma is refusing to share the water. Mufasa begins reasoning with Boma when Taka roars and says that Boma must move by order of the Lion King, or Mufasa will face Boma in combat. Boma charges out of the water at Mufasa. Mufasa escapes to safety with Rafiki, but Boma says that his herd will get Taka. Mufasa runs back to find Taka being attacked by Boma's herd. The largest of the buffaloes slashes Taka with his horns, knocking him unconscious. Mufasa leaps in to save his brother and the buffaloes ready themselves to attack again.

Before they can do so, however, Ahadi appears with a large herd of animals. The herd surrounds the buffaloes and ends the fight. Later on, Rafiki examines Taka and finds a deep cut on his left eye, which will never fully heal. When Taka reveals that he wished to get back at Ahadi for breaking his promise, he is scolded by Ahadi for letting his anger rule him. A remorseful Taka then requests that he be called "Scar" from now on, as a reminder of how he foolishly allowed his anger to rule him.

The Lion King (stage play)

John Vickery as Scar in the musical.

Come, sweet Nala. It's written in the stars. (Nala: What are you doing? Are you listening to me?) We'll create a host of little Scars.
~ Scar trying to seduce Nala into being his queen.

Within the stage play of the same name, Scar's actions are relatively the same as compared to the original film, with a few exceptions: one of them being that he had any of his followers who had questioned his leadership put to death for doing so. The other being that he at one point tries and fails to make Nala become his queen and mother of his children (an act of his that was cut from the original film). He also becomes more and more paranoid as he feels he's being haunted by his deceased older brother.

Timon and Pumbaa

Scar makes a few cameo appearances meant for comedy purposes in the animated series Timon & Pumbaa, despite that he was already dead by that time. He is seen when Timon tries to revive Pumbaa's amnesia after being struck by lightning, and when Zazu cleans out his trash can.

House of Mouse

In House of Mouse, Scar made a few minor cameos despite the fact that he was dead. In the episode "Jiminy Cricket", Jiminy used Scar as an example of temptations. At the end of that same episode, Scar was seen aside from some of the other guests when they were arguing over Jiminy. In the episode "Ask Von Drake", Scar can be briefly seen being held by Rafiki just as Simba was in the film. In the episode "Goofy's Valentine Date", Scar was seen along with the other guests. Strangely enough, he (for some reason) does not appear in the show's tie-in film Mickey's House of Villains, not even as a cameo, and is, therefore, one of the only three Disney villains featured in that show who does not appear in that film at all, with other two beings Commander Rourke and Shere Khan because they are absent. For some reason, he never speaks in the show.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom

In Adventure Land, Scar makes a deal with Hades, whereas if Scar could obtain the crystal of the magic kingdom, he would be granted immortality and rule over the Pride Lands forever.

He forces the hyenas to work for him again, deceptively convincing them that he is invincible. he tries to get them to start an elephant stampede to crush anyone who gets in his way, but they fail. When the Park guests injure Scar in front of the hyenas, Shenzi is the first to see through his lies, rallies up the pack and leaves.

After a conversation with Hades, Scar twice battles the park guests, the first time beating them, the next time, it's vice versa. Hades gives Scar one last chance and turns him into a devilish and destructive storm cloud as he battles the park guests again. Scar is ultimately defeated, and the park guests win. Later, at the end, he is sucked into a snow globe with Hades and all of the other he recruited.

Scar appears as both the main antagonist and final boss of the 1994 videogame adaptation The Lion King on Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

Kingdom Hearts II

Scar in Kingdom Hearts II.

How does it feel to be king, hmm?
~ Scar's Ghost taunting Simba.

Scar is a boss in the Pride Lands chapter and teams up with Pete. In the end, he faces Simba as in the movie, only he goes up the cliff and Pete reveals that Scar has become a Heartless. Sora, Donald, and Goofy join Simba to face the tyrannical lion who ends up losing before he was collapsing from exhaustion and dying.

His ghost was also a boss in Kingdom Hearts II. He looks like the living Scar, but he is darker in color and he has a dark aura around him.

Now a ghost-filled with hatred, he would haunt Simba, who was now king. This caused Simba to become extremely afraid. This made him the laughing stock of the hyenas, mainly Shenzi, Banzai and Ed. Simba seeked help, and went to the hyenas, asking if they knew of Scar's Ghost. They knew nothing and said Scar's Ghost only hangs out around fraidy cats. Immediately, Scar's Ghost appeared. He taunted Simba, asking what it was like to be king. Simba retreated, causing the hyenas to laugh maniacally. Simba went to his paradise, where he met Timon and Pumbaa, but even there he was not safe from the ghost and was still tormented. He was having doubts and Sora tried to snap him out of it, but it didn't work. Then Donald used his powers to create a fake ghost, and it taunted Simba until he overcame his fear and pounced on it.

Now facing his fears, he went back to the Pridelands. Scar's Ghost was already there, and it was now haunting Simba's wife Nala and Pumbaa. When Simba returned, the ghost confronted him, but Simba told it to get out, scaring it away. Soon after, all of the ghosts came and formed a giant Heartless beast called the Groundshaker. The beast attacked, and a large battle ensued. The Groundshaker took several hits, and it collapsed and disappeared. Simba claimed his place as king.

Quotes

The Lion King

Scar: Life's not fair, is it? You see I— well, I… shall never be King. And you… shall never see the light of another day. Adieu…
Zazu: Didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?
Scar: What do you want?
Zazu: I'm here to announce that King Mufasa is on his way. So you'd better have a good excuse for missing the ceremony this morning.
Scar: Oh now look, Zazu, you've made me lose my lunch.
Zazu: Hah! You'll lose more than that when the king gets through with you. He's as mad as a hippo with a hernia.
Scar: Oooh, I quiver with fear.
Zazu: No, Scar! Don't look at me that way. Help!
[Scar grabs Zazu in his mouth and Mufasa enters.]
Mufasa: Scar. Drop him.
Zazu: Impeccable timing, your majesty.
Scar: [spits Zazu out] Why, If it isn't my big brother descending from on high to mingle with the commoners.
Mufasa: Sarabi and I didn't see you at the presentation of Simba.
Scar: That was today? Oh, I feel simply awful. Must have slipped my mind.
Zazu: Yes, well, as slippery as your mind is, as the king's brother, you should have been first in line!
Scar: Well, I was first in line… until the little hairball was born.
Mufasa: That "hairball" is my son and your future king.
Scar: Ohh, I shall practice my curtsy.
Mufasa: Don't turn your back on me, Scar.
Scar: Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps YOU shouldn't turn YOUR back on me.
Mufasa: [growls furiously at Scar] Is that a CHALLENGE?
Scar: Temper. Temper. I wouldn't dream of challenging you.
Zazu: Pity. Why not?
Scar: Well, as far as brains go, I got the lion's share. But, when it comes to brute strength… I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool.
~ Scar makes up excuses for missing Simba's ceremony and reassuring Mufasa that he wouldn't dare to challenge him as he doesn't have the brawn to do it.
Simba: Hey Uncle Scar! Guess what!
Scar: I despise guessing games.
Simba: I'm going to be king of Pride Rock.
Scar: Oh goody.
Simba: My dad just showed me the whole kingdom, and I'm going to rule it all. Heh heh.
Scar: Yes. Well… forgive me for not leaping for joy. Bad back, you know
Simba: Hey, Uncle Scar? When I'm king, what'll that make you?
Scar: A monkey's uncle.
Simba: Heh heh. You're so weird.
Scar: You have NO idea. So, your father showed you the whole kingdom, did he?
Simba: Everything.
Scar: He didn't show you what's beyond that rise at the northern border…?
Simba: Well, no… he said I can't go there.
Scar: And he's absolutely right. It's far too dangerous. Only the bravest lions go there.
Simba: Well, I'm brave! What's out th—
Scar: No, I'm sorry, Simba, I just can't tell you.
Simba: Why not?
Scar: Simba, Simba, I'm only looking out for the well-being of my favorite nephew.
Simba: Yeah, right, I'm your only nephew.
Scar: All the more reason for me to be protective… An elephant graveyard is no place for a young prince… Oops!
Simba: An elephant what? Whoa.
Scar: Oh dear, I've said too much… Well, I suppose you'd have found sooner or later, you being SO clever and all…Oh, just do me one favor — promise me you'll never visit that dreadful place.
Simba: No problem.
Scar: There's a good lad. You run along now and have fun. And remember… it's our little secret.
~ Scar tricking Simba into going to the Elephant Graveyard after he intentionally reveals its existence to the cub.
Scar: Oh, surely we lions are not all THAT bad.
Banzai: Oh, Scar, it's just you.
Shenzi: We were afraid it was somebody important.
Banzai: Yeah, you know, like Mufasa.
Shenzi: Yeah.
Scar: I see.
Banzai: Now that's power.
Shenzi: Tell me about it. I just hear that name and I shudder.
Banzai: Mufasa.
Shenzi: Ooooh. …Do it again.
Banzai: Mufasa.
Shenzi: Ooooh!
Banzai: Mufasa. Mufasa! Mufasa!
Shenzi: …Oooh! It tingles me.
Scar: I'm surrounded by idiots.
Banzai: Not you, Scar. You're one of us. I mean you're… you're our pal. Hey, did you bring us anything to eat?
Scar: [gives a zebra leg] I don't think you really deserve this. I practically gift-wrapped those cubs for you. And you couldn't even dispose of them.
Shenzi: Well, ya know. It wasn't exactly like they was alone, Scar.
Banzai: Yeah. What are we supposed to do? Kill Mufasa?
Scar: Precisely.
~ Scar scolding Shenzi, Banzai and Ed for failing to kill Simba and Nala before his song "Be Prepared" starts.
Banzai: Yeah, be prepared! We'll be prepared! ...For what?
Scar: For the death of the king!
Banzai: Why? Is he sick?
Scar: No, fool, we're gonna kill him. And Simba, too.
Shenzi: Great idea! Who needs a king?
Shenzi & Banzai: No king! No king! La-la-la-la-la-la!
Scar: IDIOTS! There will
be a king!
Banzai: Hey, but you said, uh...
Scar:
I will be king! Stick with me, and you NEVER GO HUNGRY AGAIN!
Shenzi & Banzai: Yay! All right! Long live the king!
Hyena: LONG LIVE THE KING! LONG LIVE THE KING!
~ Scar teaming up with the Hyenas to overthrow and kill his brother, along with his nephew during the song, "Be Prepared".
Scar: Now you wait here. Your father has a marvelous surprise for you.
Simba: Oooh. What is it?
Scar: If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise, now would it?
Simba: If you tell me, I'll still act surprised.
Scar: Ho ho ho. You are such a naughty boy.
Simba: Come on, Uncle Scar.
Scar: No-no-no-no-no-no-no. This is just for you and your daddy. You know, a sort of… father-son… thing. Well! I'd better go get him.
Simba: I'll go with you.
Scar: No! Heh heh heh. No. Just stay on this rock. You wouldn't want to end up in another mess like you did with the hyenas…
Simba: You know about that?
Scar: Simba, everybody knows about that.
Simba: Really?
Scar: Oh, yes. Lucky Daddy was there to save you, eh? Oh… and just between us, you might want to work on that little roar of yours. Hmm?
Simba: Oh… Okay… Hey, Uncle Scar, will I like the surprise?
Scar: Simba, it's to DIE for.
~ Scar tricking Simba into staying in a gorge in order to have him and Mufasa killed by a wildebeest stampede.
Scar: Simba, what have you done?
Simba: There were wildebeests and he tried to save me… it was an accident, I… I didn't mean for it to happen.
Scar: Of course, of course, you didn't. No one… ever means for these things to happen. …But the king IS dead. And if it weren't for you, he'd still be alive. Oh! What will your mother think?
Simba: What am I gonna do?
Scar: Run away, Simba. Run… Run away and never return.
[Simba runs off as the Hyenas appear.]
Scar: Kill him.
~ Scar tricking Simba into thinking that his father's death was his fault and leaving the Pride Lands.
Mufasa's death is a terrible tragedy; but to lose Simba, who had barely begun to live for me it is a deep personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet, out of the ashes of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era in which lion and hyena come together, in a great and glorious future.
~ Scar delivers the news about Mufasa and "Simba's" deaths and introduces the Hyena Clan as he takes over the crown.
Scar: Oh Zazu, do lighten up. Sing something with a little… bounce in it.
Zazu: It's a small world after all…
Scar: NO! No. Anything but that!
Zazu: I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts diddley-dee-dee. There they are a-standing in a row.
Scar: Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head…
Zazu: Oh… I would never have had to do this for Mufasa.
Scar: What? What did you say?
Zazu: Oh, nothing!
Scar: You know the law: Never, ever mention THAT name in my presence. I… am… the KING!
Zazu: Yes, sire. You ARE the king. I… I… Well, I only mentioned it to illustrate the differences in your royal managerial approaches.
[The hyenas enter.]
Banzai: Hey, boss!
Scar: Oh, what is it this time?
Banzai: We got a bone to pick with you.
Shenzi: I'll handle this. Scar, there's no food, no water…
Banzai: Yeah, it's dinner time, and we ain't got no stinkin' entrees.
Scar: It's the lionesses' job to do the hunting…
Banzai: Yeah, but they won't go hunt.
Oh… eat Zazu.
Zazu: Oh, you wouldn't want me! I'd be so tough and gamey and… eww…
Scar: Oh, Zazu, don't be ridiculous. All you need is a little garnish.
Banzai: I thought things were bad under Mufasa.
Scar: What did you say?
Banzai: I said Muf… I said, uh "Qué pasa?"
Scar: Good. Now get out.
Banzai: Mm… yeah, but — we're still hungry.
Scar: Out!
~ Scar listening to the hyenas' complaints about the Pride Lands with no food and water and demanding that they leave his cave after Banzai accidentally mentions Mufasa's name.
Scar: SARABI!
Sarabi: Yes, Scar?
Scar: Where is your hunting party? They're not doing their job.
Sarabi: Scar, there is no food. The herds have moved on.
Scar: No. You're just not looking hard enough.
Sarabi: It's over. There is nothing left. We have only one choice. We must leave Pride Rock.
Scar: We're not going anywhere.
Sarabi: Then you have sentenced us to death.
Scar: Then so be it.
Sarabi: You can't do that.
I'm the king. I can do whatever I want.
Sarabi: If you were half the king Mufasa was you would nev—
Scar: I'M TEN TIMES THE KING MUFASA WAS! [sees Simba] Mufasa? No. You're dead.
Sarabi: Mufasa?
Simba: No. It's me.
Sarabi: Simba? You're alive? How can that be?
Simba: It doesn't matter; I'm home.
Scar: Simba…? Simba! I'm a little surprised to see you, alive. [glares at Shanzei, Banzai, and Ed as they back away nervously]
Simba: Give me one good reason why I shouldn't rip you apart.
Scar: Oh, Simba, you must understand. The pressures of ruling a kingdom…
Simba: …Are no longer yours. Step down, Scar.
Scar: Oh, oh, ye — Well, I would, heh, naturally, heh — however, there is one little problem. You see them? [points up to the Hyena Clan] They think I'M king.
Nala: Well, we don't. Simba is the rightful king.
Simba: The choice is yours, Scar. Either step down or fight.
Scar: Oh, must it all end in violence? I'd hate to be responsible for the death of a family member. Wouldn't you agree, Simba?
Simba: That's not gonna work, Scar. I've put it behind me.
Scar: Eh, but what about your faithful subjects? Have they put it behind them?
Nala: Simba, what is he talking about?
Scar: Ahh, so you haven't told them your little secret. Well, Simba, now's your chance to tell them. Tell them who is responsible for Mufasa's death!
Simba: I am.
Sarabi: It's not true. Tell me it's not true.
Simba: It's true.
Scar: You see, he admits it! Murderer!
Simba: No. It was an accident.
Scar: If it weren't for you, Mufasa would still be alive. It's your fault he's dead; do you deny it?
Simba: No.
Scar: Then… you're… guilty.
Simba: No. I'm not a murderer.
Scar: Oh, Simba, you're in trouble again. But this time, Daddy isn't here to save you. And now EVERYONE… KNOWS… WHY!
Nala: SIMBA!
[a thunderbolt suddenly strikes the ground, setting it on fire] Scar: Now this looks familiar. Hmm. Where have I seen this before? Let me think. Hmmm… hmmm. Oh yes, I remember. This is just the way your father looked before he died. [pierces Simba's paws with his razor-sharp claws and pulls him close to his face] And here's MY little secret: [whispers in Simba's ear]
I killed Mufasa.
Simba: NoooooOOOO! [jumps Scar] MURDERER!
Scar: No, Simba, please.
Simba: Tell them the truth!
Scar: Truth? But truth is in the eye of the behold —
[Simba presses his paw down on Scar's throat]
Scar: llgkkk! All right. All right. [faintly] I did it.
Simba: So they can hear you.
Scar: I KILLED MUFASA!
~ Scar being forced by Simba to admit his role on Mufasa's death.
Simba: [approaching Scar] Murderer.
Scar: Simba, Simba. Please. Please have mercy. I beg you.
Simba: You don't deserve to live.
Scar: But, Simba, I am… ah… family. It's the hyenas who are the real enemy. It was their fault — it was their idea!
[Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed are in the background. They overhear and back away growling at Scar's betrayal.]
Simba: Why should I believe you? Everything you ever told me was a lie.
Scar: What are you going to do? You wouldn't kill your own uncle…?
Simba: No, Scar. I'm not like you.
Scar: Oh, Simba, thank you. You are truly noble. I'll make it up to you, I promise. How can I, ah, prove myself to you? Tell me; I mean, anything.
Simba: Run. Run away, Scar. And never return.
Scar: Yes. Of course. As you wish… …your MAJESTY!
~ Scar pathetically pleading Simba for mercy even blaming Mufasa's death on the hyenas, unaware that they overheard him, and being relieved when Simba decides to spare him and tells him to run away and never return, but Scar, refusing to accept defeat throws embers at Simba and attempts to kill him.
No! L—L—L—Le—Le—Le—Le—Let me explain. No, you don't understand! No, I didn't mean for… no, no! Look, I'm sorry I called you… no! NOOOO!!!
~ Scar's last words before the hyenas close in on him and fiercely rip him apart for planning to betray them.

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride

Gotcha! Trust me!
~ Scar stops Simba in saving Mufasa

The Lion Guard

[Scar laughs maniacally]
Janja: Are… are you…?
Scar: Yes… I am… Scar!
~ Scar finally gets resurrected.
Kiburi: What's this great thing I'm supposed to see? A volcano?
[Scar's ghost appears]
Scar: I am much more than a volcano!
Kiburi: Wha…? What!?
Scar: Welcome to the Outlands, Kiburi!
Janja: Hahahaha! Yeah, welcome!
Kiburi: What's going on!?
Scar: Don't worry Kiburi. We're all friends here. I have plans for you and your crocodiles. Big plans indeed. [maniacal laugh]
~ Scar meets with Kiburi and welcomes him into his realm and ranks.
These first attacks were merely a test to see if Kion would react as I predicted. The next attack is the one that counts because next time, your target will be Rafiki!
~ Scar about to send his army to kill Rafiki
But the skinks have informed me that Rafiki is not on his tree. He is near Mapungo cliffs, meditating!
~ Scar telling where Rafiki is in the moment.
I came here to say "Well done". Kilio Valley is all ours, for as long we remain and lay claim to it.
~ Scar congratulates his army for taking Kilio Valley.
I'm afraid you're wrong about that Kion!
~ Scar meets the Lion Guard.
Scar: Stung by a scorpion, was he?
Bunga: How do you know that?
Scar: Whom do you think sent that scorpion?! All part of my plan to finish Simba once and for all!
~ Scar revealing that he ordered Sumu to sting Simba.
Army of Scar, attack!
~ Scar ordering his amry to kill the Lion Guard.
Yes, but I am! And I have no time for these ridiculous arguments!
~ Scar stops Janja's and Ushari's argument.
Enough! Janja, I summoned you here for a reason. You have the honor of carrying out my latest plan. It will bring suffering into the Pridelands and will leave them weakened and begging to surrender. Janja, take your hyenas into the Pridelands. Go to the rocky river bank above Hakuna Matata Falls. Wait for the cover of darkness, then push the rocks into the river and block the water from flowing.
~ Scar explains his plan to cut off a major water supply in the Pridelands during the dry season.
Scar: That's right, Simba! You never thought you'd see me again, did you?
Simba: What do you want?
Scar: What do I want? Ah, Simba, Simba. Always so naïve. First, we took Kilio Valley. Then we wrecked Big Springs. And now your precious Mizimu Grove is doomed! It's only a matter of time before all of the Pride Lands is mine!
~ Scar confronts Simba again.
If the plan works, we'll soon be rid of the Royal Family and the Lion Guard. And, the potential hyena revolt.
~ Scar admitting his second betrayal of hyenas.
Scar: Ah, Simba. You've managed to escape my little scheme. Too bad the same can't be said for the Lion Guard.
Kion: Guess again, Scar.
Scar: Ah, Kion. Little leader of the Lion Guard. Time for you to lead everyone out of the Pride Lands. While you still can.
Kion: We'll never surrender to you, Scar!
Scar: You don't have the power to defeat me! But, if you ever care to try, you know where to find me.
~ Scar appearing at the top of Pride Rock, after Simba and Kion survived his last assault attempt.
Scar: So predictable. Janja has joined the Pride Landers.
Ushari: And… you're okay with that? I mean, of course, you're okay with that.
Scar: Kion may have the power to defeat me. But, not the way I told Janja. If Kion uses his most powerful Roar here in the caldera, it won't destroy me. Instead, he'll cause an eruption so huge, it will destroy the Lion Guard. And, turn the Pride Lands into a wasteland.
Ushari: Yes! And then, we reptiles can take over everything! Under your rule, of course.
Scar: Oh, yes, Ushari. You can have whatever's left… And, I'll need you for the next part of my plan.
Ushari: You will?
Scar: Yes. Have I ever told you how I got my scar?
Ushari: No. No, you haven't.
Scar: I wasn't much older than Kion when it happened. Back when I was leader of my Lion Guard…
~ Scar explains his final plan to kill the Lion Guard at Ushari before telling him how he got his scar.
You have the mark of evil. Just like me, Kion. Accept your destiny. There is no other choice!
~ Scar trying to blackmail Kion after Ushari scratched him.
Kion: I DO have another choice, Scar. Something only one Lion Guard leader can do to another.
Scar: [laughs] And… what's that?
Kion: I forgive you.
Scar: You… you WHAT!?
Kion: I can't judge you for everything you've done. The Lions of the Past need to do that.
Scar: No! NOOOOOOO!
Ushari: What? Scar's plan failed?
Scar: The roar is a curse, Kion! You'll see! Sisi Ni Sawaaaaaaa!!!!!
~ Scar's final words before he is extinguished for good.

Reception

Scar has received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences alike, who consider Scar to be one of Disney's greatest villains, with some stating that he was a better character than Simba. Critics who didn't like the film tended to enjoy Scar's characterization and Irons' performance. Irons himself said that compared to most villains he played, Scar "measures very highly," having "charm," "Machiavellian qualities" and being "iconic in some of the things he says. Irons would then win an Annie Award for Best Achievement for Voice Acting. Scar is also considered widely as one of Disney's darkest villains due to his murder of his own brother, Mufasa. They described him as a perfect introduction to the elements of greed, depravity and fascism. Despite worldwide acclaim, he did meet some mild controversy, being perceived as a racist, effeminate and homophobic and fans did complain he was less enjoyable after becoming king. Critics and parents alike warn that Scar's behavior can frighten small children. Due to being one of Disney's most infamous villains, Scar is one of the primary members of the Disney Villains franchise.

Trivia

  • Before the The Lion Guard revealed Scar's true name to be Askari (the Swahili word for 'soldier' or 'military'), written works such as the book The Lion King: Six New Adventures had his name as Taka, which is Swahili for 'trash' or 'garbage'. However, the stories were confirmed to be non-canon with the films and television series.
  • Although his nickname did not come from Swahili, his real name in Swahili is never mentioned outside of an Instagram post by Ford Riley stating that Scar's original name was 'Askari.'
  • He is ranked 3rd in the Top 30 Disney Villains by DVD Dizzy.
  • In an earlier draft for The Lion King, Scar had a snake minion. Scar would eventually have a snake minion in the form of Ushari in The Lion Guard. However, whilst Ushari was a cobra, the deleted snake minion was a rock python. He was also a rogue lion with no relation with Mufasa. But the producers decided later to make Scar the brother of Mufasa in order to make the plot more interesting. This is the reason why Mufasa and Scar look very different from each other.
  • According to Andreas Deja, Scar is modeled after his voice actor Jeremy Irons.
  • Scar is notable for being voiced by Jeremy Irons and animated by Andreas Deja (who also animated Jafar, Alameda Slim, Dr. Frankenollie, and Gaston).
    • In Disney's Hercules, the Nemean Lion that Hades sends to fight Hercules bears an exact resemblance to Scar after it is killed and turned into a skin by the former. Given that Andreas Deja was the lead animator of the film, this cameo was likely a reference to his previous work; and may also be a reference to Zazu's joke that Scar could make "handsome throw rug" as well.
  • Scar is loosely based on real-life dictator Adolf Hitler; as the scene where Scar is overlooking his hyena army mimics the scene where Hitler over looks his army and stretches out his hand over them.
  • Scar is the first of three Disney villains to be blood related to the film's main protagonist. He would later be followed by Hades and King Runeard.
  • It is said that there is no blood relation between Scar and Kovu, who appeared in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, so there is no blood relation between Kovu and Kiara. However, Nuka mentions that Scar took Kovu in before he died, making Kovu the adoptive son of Scar.
    • In the early drafts of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, Scar was married to Zira and had a son with her named Nunka, who would have seduced Kiara. However, this idea was scrapped because of the fact that Nunka and Kiara having a romantic relationship would be incestuous due to them being first cousins once removed. Instead, Nunka became Kovu and was instead made Scar's adoptive son with his biological father unknown.
  • In an earlier draft for The Lion King, Scar was originally a baboon as the plot of the film would have been about a battle between lions and baboons. The only thing that was kept was the scar on his left eye.
  • In an early script for The Lion King, Scar was a rogue lion who was never related to Mufasa and Simba. However, this was changed after the writers decided later in production that the threat should come from within the family for a bigger impact on the characters.
  • Scar was originally going to reveal his allegiance with the hyenas to the pride some years into his reign instead of straight after becoming king.
  • It's unknown whether Scar held Zira in high regard, while he did teach her about the Roar of the Elders, he didn't bother to recruit her into his Army in the Lion Guard. This could be because he didn't know she lived in the Outlands. In out-universe, that was done to avoid continuity errors with The Lion King II: Simba's Pride cause Zira and the Outsiders attacked the Pride Lands while Kion was away at the Tree of Life after defeating Scar.
  • The fact that Scar adopted Kovu and makes him his successor to the throne is an incoherence with the character itself because Scar was known to care about no one but only himself. This is further supported in The Lion Guard, because at no point did Scar show concern for where Kovu was and was obsessed only by getting his revenge against Simba. However, he didn't know he lived in the Outlands.
    • It's likely that Scar was mesmerized by a cub who shared similarities with him despite their lack of blood relation. He also probably planned to raise the cub into becoming like himself.
  • Whenever Scar had hyenas as his minions, he always betrayed them. In the first film, Scar betrayed the Hyena Clan to try to escape his fate, which turned out to be his loss. In The Lion Guard, he betrayed Janja because he began to doubt his allegiance to him. However, unlike the last time he had considered that in case it did not work, he gave Janja false information before betraying him for things to turn in his favor, which almost worked.
  • In the episode "Battle for the Pride Lands" of The Lion Guard, it is revealed that Scar got his scar from a cobra, who was a friend of an unnamed lion that Scar befriended. The lion promised to cure his scar if Scar agreed to do whatever he said, instead Scar destroyed him and the cobra with the roar. When Scar hoped that Mufasa would praise him for destroying the scheming lion, Mufasa mocked him instead by nicknaming him "Scar". The poison from the cobra later made Scar's personality even darker than it already was.
    • This means that Mufasa was partially responsible, albeit unintentionally, for the creation of Scar.
    • According to Ford Riley, Scar's original name was "Askari" named after his ancestor and the founder of the original Lion Guard of the same name (who later on appears in Season 3) but was shortened down to "Scar" by Mufasa after he was bitten by the cobra.
  • Scar is easily the most evil villain in the The Lion King franchise as most villains redeem (like Janja and the Outsiders), are taken comically (like Nuka or Shenzi, Banzai and Ed) or have noble goals. While Scar does have a reason on being evil by being jealous of Mufasa being king, bitten by the Strange Cobra and then being nicknamed by Mufasa turned him evil, he goes way past from being excused by that by not just by outright murdering Mufasa, but tried to kill his nephew, Simba, when Simba was a child and blamed Mufasa's death on him and wants to turn the Pride Lands into a wasteland without life as revenge for his demise. Not to mention the venom is only shown to bring out the bite victim's darker instincts and desires and Scar had already wanted to overthrow Mufasa before he got his scar.
  • Scar is considered a foil to both Simba and Kion. If Simba didn't realize that being king takes responsibilities and refused to confront his past, he would've ended up like Scar. He is also an example of what Kion would have become if he did not decide to search for a cure for his scar.
  • Scar is a member of Disney's Sinister Cats, a sub-franchise of the mainline Disney Villains franchise.
  • Though he is well known after his death, Scar's demise at the jaws of his hyena minions is not well known. Both Simba and Janja claim that Scar dies in the fire, while Zira believes that Scar was killed by Simba.
  • Despite being the main antagonist of the The Lion King franchise, Strange Lion was the one who caused Scar to fall into villainy by having Strange Cobra giving him a scar.
  • Scar is pictured on one of the ten USA non-denominated commemorative postage stamps celebrating "Disney Villains", issued as a pane of twenty stamps on July 15, 2017. The set was issued in a single sheet of twenty stamps. The price of each stamp on day of issue was 49 cents. The other villains depicted in this issue are the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Honest John from Pinocchio, Lady Tremaine from Cinderella, the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
  • At around 29 minutes, Jim Cummings (the voice of Ed the Hyena) had to fill in for Jeremy Irons for the finale of "Be Prepared". Irons threw out his voice after performing the line "you won't get a sniff without me!". The rest of his recording did not sound powerful enough.
  • When Scar was the leader of his Lion Guard, he seems to have been the youngest member because the other lions were clearly adult and fully grown, while Scar was a teenager.
    • Naturally, this could imply that when Scar led the Lion Guard at Kion's age, he recruited teenage members of his Pride.
  • Scar is Jeremy Irons' second voice acting film role.
  • Originally, Scar was going to send Nala as a fully grown lion away from Pride Rock because she ignored his romantic approaches, after which she finds Simba alive and well with Timon and Pumbaa. This idea was ultimately abandoned, as sexual harassment was considered improper in a family film and may have gotten the film a PG-13 rating, and it took too long to finish. However, the stage musical adaptation includes this plot development as part of director Julie Taymor's efforts to expand the female characters' presence in the story.
  • In the first conversation between Scar and Simba, Simba comments to Scar, "You're so weird..." to which Scar retorts a cryptic, "You have no idea...", a line spoken by Jeremy Irons in similar fashion in Reversal of Fortune (1990).
  • Scar suffers from the Seven Deadly Sins.
    • Pride: He believes himself to be deserving of power. He also refuses to abandon the Pride Lands, even if it means the death of his subjects and hates when people question his rule.
    • Sloth: He is indolent even as the Pride Lands fall into ruin.
    • Gluttony: He enjoys food while letting the rest of his kingdom, including his loyal followers, starve.
    • Envy: He is envious of his brother and nephew for getting the throne and plots their deaths for it.
    • Lust: In a deleted scene, he attempts to woo Nala, eager to produce heirs.
    • Greed: He wants power and will destroy anyone to get it.
    • Wrath: He gets enraged when Mufasa is mentioned to him, and he attacks Sarabi for comparing him unfavorably to Mufasa. During The Lion Guard, he goes out of his way to order his minions to attack the Pride Lands out of spite.
  • Jeremy Irons had at first refused the role due to not being comfortable going from the dramatic performance as Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune (1990) to a comedic role. Once he came in, however, Irons' performance even inspired the writers to incorporate more of his acting as von Bülow - even adding one of that character's lines, "You have no idea" - and animator Andreas Deja to watch both Reversal of Fortune (1990) and Damage (1992) to pick up Irons' facial traits and tics.
  • Jeremy Irons was reluctant to lend his voice as Scar, until he saw the animation and fell in love with the character.
  • When Scar is signing along to 'Lovely Bunch of Coconuts' with Zazu, he holds up a baboon skull and moves its jaw to the lyrics. While the context is very different from the original play, one can't help but be reminded by the Shakespearean inspiration of the film.
  • Jeremy Irons came prepared with cigarettes for his voice recordings. He was smoking including during Be Prepared. Rob Minkoff stated that the people involved in the making of the movie had to edit out all of the smoking.
  • Near the start of the film Scar tells a mouse that himself will never be King and the mouse will die. Ironically Scar does become 'King' later in the film while the mouse lives after Zazu prevented him from eating the mouse. Also foreshadows Scar's death at the end when the hyenas devour him alive.
  • During the early stages of production, the film's climax had a different ending. After their battle on top of Pride Rock, Scar is left hanging on the edge of a rock and asks Simba for mercy, saying that Simba is not like him, that he is not a murderer, and asks for his forgiveness. Simba pulls him up, but he's thrown over by Scar to the raging fire below and lands safely into a tree. Scar, believing Simba to be dead, starts laughing over his victory before he is burned alive by the fire. The sequence was story boarded, but it was not used, being considered too dark for a Disney film.
  • Unlike the other lions, Scar's claws are always displayed throughout the movie.
  • If it wasn't for Scar telling Simba that he killed Mufasa, he would have most likely succeeded in killing Simba.
  • Despite not being involved with them, Ushari and Scar were indirectly responsible for the formation of Makucha's Army.
  • Scar's death is considered by many people as one of Disney's most violent and gruesome deaths; He is mauled alive by the Hyena Clan, even though just their shadows were seen.
  • Ironically unlike Zira, Scar never taunts Kion for having a lion guard not made up of lions.
  • Scar is one of only five Disney villains ever nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain, the others being Hector Barbossa and Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Jadis the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear from Toy Story 3.
