Askari, better known as Scar, is the main antagonist of Disney's The Lion King franchise.
He is the envious younger brother of Mufasa, as well as his archenemy and murderer, and the arch-nemesis of both his nephew, Simba, and later grand-nephew, Kion. He is also Shenzi, Banzai and Ed's former leader and boss, the former leader of his army, and the boss of Ushari and Zira's idol.
The former leader of the Lion Guard, his desire to rule Pride Rock, as well as the Pride Lands, drove him to enact a regicidal plot to kill both his older brother and nephew and usurp the throne.

Appearance[]
“ | Well, as far as brains go, I got the lion's share, but when it comes to brute strength... I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool. | „ |
~ Scar remarking on his poor genetics despite his high intelligence.File:The Lion King - Opening Scene 1080p (online-audio-converter.com).ogg |
Scar is a scraggly lion, visibly malnourished and far skinnier compared to the other males, appearing quite slender compared to his older brother but of a physical build quite close to a young adult Simba. However, he is about the same height as the rest of the males, able to be eye to eye with them. He has sharp features and is a gangly lion with orange-brown fur and yellow eyes with striking green irises— he attributes his skinniness and visible lack of strength to “poor genes”. He has a silky black mane, elbow tufts, a goatee-like beard and his claws are always extended, although sometimes curled up on its hind legs. He also has a pink scar over his left eye, earning him his nickname. He also speaks with an English accent. Despite his supposed poor genetics and not appearing very strong, admitting to himself he isn’t strong as well, Scar could actually hold his own very well against the much younger and more powerfully built (yet likely far less experienced) Simba during their final battle.
When he was younger, Scar, back then known by his real name Askari, appeared to be somewhat more bulky, resembling his brother more, did not yet have a tuft of fur at his elbows and his mane was shorter. He didn't have his trademark scar until he got it from the Strange Cobra; the scar later became such a distinctive feature of his that 'Scar' became his nickname and most people knew him as that.
As a ghost, Scar appeared as a sentient flame with his face. His mane was still black (possibly because it was made of smoke) and his eyes and even his scar glowed bright yellow.
Personality[]
“ | Mufasa: Don't turn your back on me, Scar! Scar: Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps you shouldn't turn your back on me. |
„ |
~ Scar provokes his brother Mufasa by telling him not to turn his back on him, and foreshadowing his intentions. |
As a young lion, Askari was the leader of the Lion Guard who protected the Pride Lands from danger. At the time, Askari proved to be a good leader and constantly followed his duties and was faithful to his friends and brother, though he had a secret lust for more power and attention. One day, he met a Strange Lion and Askari was attacked and poisoned by his pet, an equally Strange Cobra. The venom brought out Askari's desire for power, his greediness, his jealousy and annoyance towards Mufasa. However, the bite and resulting venom only removes moral restraints and amplifies negative traits and desires; for example, his annoyance for Mufasa had already existed, but the venom that brought it out more eventually turned it into murderous hatred.
Askari seemed to be rather easily annoyed as well— after being bitten by the cobra, his anger is increased, and he became intensely mad at both the cobra and the lion who commands it. After double-crossing and slaughtering the lion, he reported to Mufasa, spinning the narrative in his favor to make him look like a hero, in order to garner sympathy and to be seen as superior to his brother. However, this backfired, as he was only to be teased by his older brother with the nickname of "Scar", which makes him give up the search for a cure for the venom given by the cobra despite the fact he knew the existence of such a cure, simply because he seemed to enjoy the amplified negativity he gained and the anger against his brother. This also showed Scar's lack of forgiveness to his older brother and pettiness, and showing how he is not a tragic character in the slightest, openly embracing his negative traits coming out. Likewise, Scar had no qualms about slaughtering his Lion Guard when they refused to help him overthrow Mufasa, even smiling in satisfaction after killing them, showing that he never truly cared for them.
As an adult, Scar is a cunning, sarcastic and narcissistic lion with a cultured and elegant demeanor, and a wry and cynical wit. However, even with his evil and deceiving ways, he prefers to run rather than fight, though if cornered Scar has shown the ability to hold his own as seen in his last fight with Simba. He was very arrogant, believing as king, he can do whatever he wants, and if he is not king he should be despite not being qualified to be so at all. Scar is filled with loathing and disgust for his brother and nephew, and most likely everybody against him as well. He doesn’t care much about the hyenas and seems to view them only as tools and weapons to use for his own gain, which ultimately resulted in his demise when he tried to blame his crimes on them. His loathing of his older brother is proved when he instituted a rule against saying Mufasa's name in his presence. Even when he is above Mufasa, having betrayed, murdered, and stolen the throne from him, he remains sensitive to his brother's mention. It is one of the only subjects that can flare his temper; at the mere mention of Mufasa, he threatens Zazu, assaults Sarabi, and snaps at his own hyena minions. This indicates that Scar suffers from low self-esteem. Even in a position of power, he remains vulnerable to bouts of indecision and insecurity, as he is unable to accept criticism and too stubborn to take the advice of his advisers.
It is also interesting to note that Scar didn’t really have the guts to kill Mufasa in a fight and had to have both him and Simba put in a risky situation so it can make it easier for Scar to kill him without a fight. But years later after having murdered Mufasa and thinking the hyenas murdered Simba, his nephew returned after learning what Scar did to the Pride Lands. Just when Scar had the upper hand on Simba and revealed he had murdered his brother, making Simba completely furious as Scar flees like a coward once more and begs Simba to let him live, and Scar finally fights Simba back, as he is very desperate to stay as a king, and able to jump on him since he blinded him-hoping he can have him slaughtered quick but fails and eventually got defeated and mauled by the hyenas for blaming them to save himself.
When he was king of the Pride Lands, Scar is very selfish and lazy because he does not even bother to try to take his responsibilities seriously as Mufasa did, leaving the Hyena Clan and lionesses to do the hunting and letting both of them to starve without wanting to move somewhere else at the same time a severe drought was occurring in the Pride Lands. This made the Pride Lands fall into a wasteland. Because of this, Scar was despised by all of his subjects; even the hyenas realized Mufasa was a better king given how their conditions were even more unbearable under Scar's reign. This shiftlessness comes from Scar flaunting the title of king only for the power and privileges and when he finds out that it requires real work on his part, he has less than zero interest for that and prefers chewing bones in his cave. His conceitedness also blinds him from seeing his inability to rule decently. Even when he returned as a spirit he claimed in his song When I Led The Guard that if it weren't for Simba, he'd still be ruling Pride Rock, obviously forgetting that the Pride Lands had become a wasteland and by refusing to allow himself or any of his subjects to leave, he was condemning them all to death by starvation, meaning he too would have died anyway.
Scar is also shown to be very antipathetic and intolerant of failure, criticizing the hyenas for their failure to kill Simba, even though it wasn't their fault as an unaccounted rescue from Mufasa foiled their attempt (which even Scar witnessed himself), and infuriatingly throwing them out after they made the mistake of mentioning his brother of whom Scar was extremely jealous. Scar's treatment of the hyenas was derogatory, seeing them only as valuable pawns he could use to take over the kingdom. He did not hesitate to call them publicly or criticize them for the slightest thing.
Nevertheless, Scar is also very sophisticated, charismatic, and persuasive, able to rally the hyenas to his cause and inspire fanatical loyalty from Zira and her Outsiders in death. He retained his manipulative side after returning as a spirit; using his charismatic persona to inspire the Outlanders to help him have Simba and the Lion Guard killed and control the rest of the Pride Lands.
He is also shown to be highly calculating, able to manipulate conversations and situations to his advantage with relative ease. Scar also proved to be extremely sadistic and merciless, convincing his own nephew, Simba, that he was responsible for his father's death, and later going on to taunt him that he himself was responsible for Mufasa's death actually, which also led to his demise. Scar is also a hypocrite, begging Simba to spare him because they were family, completely ignoring the fact he killed his own brother in cold blood and conspired to have his young nephew killed. What's more, he tells Janja not to run like a coward, forgetting the fact that he himself did that when Simba chased him. He also called the hyenas enemies to let them be punished by Simba while he gets off free, but when cornered by them, he called them friends only to learn that they heard his words and he is reduced to begging before being mauled to death.
Upon his return as a ghost in The Lion Guard, Scar became more chaotic in nature, as he was willing to intentionally break the Circle of Life and take over the entire Pride Lands by sowing chaos as revenge for his defeat. And what’s more, he becomes more sadistic; gleefully attempting mass murder to get revenge on Simba and the rest of the Pride Lands. He has tried to have Kion, Kiara, Tifu, Zuri, and the new Lion Guard killed despite the fact that they are all young children. He even has a hot temper that's worse than before when his minions fail him. If his allies show any sign of failure, cowardice, idiocy, or weakness, he will fly into a horrible rage. His fury only rises when his multiple plots are foiled by his grand-nephew, Kion, who he harbors a special loathing for. His hate for Simba has grown much stronger as he uses his army to have him killed many times.
Even when they meet for the first time in years, he enjoys mocking his nephew reminding him how easily he fooled Simba in the past to break his spirit. He is even willing to scare the Pridelanders and assure them that their lives will be doomed. He also attempted to have Kion use his roar on a volcano so it will cause an eruption that will devastate the Pride Lands and slay many animals in the process just for sadistic pleasure.
In the end, Scar has no concept of forgiveness nor compassion towards others, caring only for himself, and has no understanding of family, clearly shown when he is shocked and dumbfounded when Kion forgives him for his crimes and calls upon the Great Kings of the Past to judge Scar instead rather than eliminating the wicked spirit in loathing because he hated everyone. His evil actions are the whole reason why Simba gets really stressed out and paranoid in the second film, becoming overprotective of his daughter Kiara and initially not trusting Kovu, who was Scar's hand chosen heir.

The Lion King: Six New Adventures[]
In the non-canon novel series The Lion King: Six New Adventures, Scar's real name is Taka, which is Swahili for "dirt", "trash", or "want".
In A Tale of Two Brothers, which takes place many years before the events of The Lion King, an adolescent Taka is annoyed that his older brother Mufasa is chosen to be the heir to the throne. He is first seen along with Mufasa watching their father King Ahadi save a mandrill named Rafiki from three young hyenas named Shenzi, Banzai and Ed. Later at Pride Rock, Mufasa is almost attacked by a cobra, but Rafiki is able to get the cobra to leave in peace. Afterwards, Rafiki smells Taka's scent, thus meaning that he had put the cobra in Pride Rock to get it to attack Mufasa.
Taka is later annoyed when Ahadi breaks his promise to go hunting with him, choosing to solve the drought problems in the Pride Lands instead. Taka wanders off to talk to Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, who tells him that if Mufasa were to be made to look like a failure to Ahadi, then Taka himself will look good in comparison and take the throne.
Taka later tricks his brother into going down to the waterhole, where a Cape buffalo named Boma is refusing to share the water. Mufasa begins reasoning with Boma when Taka roars and says that Boma must move by order of the Lion King, or Mufasa will face Boma in combat. Boma charges out of the water at Mufasa. Mufasa escapes to safety with Rafiki, but Boma says that his herd will get Taka. Mufasa runs back to find Taka being attacked by Boma's herd. The largest of the buffaloes slashes Taka with his horns, knocking him unconscious. Mufasa leaps in to save his brother and the buffaloes ready themselves to attack again.
Before they can do so, however, Ahadi appears with a large herd of animals. The herd surrounds the buffaloes and ends the fight. Later on, Rafiki examines Taka and finds a deep cut on his left eye, which will never fully heal. When Taka reveals that he wished to get back at Ahadi for breaking his promise, he is scolded by Ahadi for letting his anger rule him. A remorseful Taka then requests that he be called "Scar" from now on, as a reminder of how he foolishly allowed his anger to rule him.
The Lion King (stage play)[]
“ | Come, sweet Nala. It's written in the stars. (Nala: What are you doing? Are you listening to me?) We'll create a host of little Scars. | „ |
~ Scar trying to seduce Nala into being his queen. |
Within the stage play of the same name, Scar's actions are relatively the same as compared to the original film, with a few exceptions: one of them being that he had any of his followers who had questioned his leadership put to death for doing so. The other being that he is also evilly seductive as well, and at one point tries and fails to make Nala become his queen and mother of his children (an act of his that was cut from the original film). He also becomes more and more paranoid as he feels he's being haunted by his deceased older brother.
Timon and Pumbaa[]
Scar makes a few cameo appearances meant for comedy purposes in the animated series Timon & Pumbaa, despite that he was already dead by that time. He is seen when Timon tries to revive Pumbaa's amnesia after being struck by lightning, and when Zazu cleans out his trash can.
House of Mouse[]
In House of Mouse, Scar made a few minor cameos despite the fact that he was dead. In the episode "Jiminy Cricket", Jiminy used Scar as an example of temptations. At the end of that same episode, Scar was seen aside from some of the other guests when they were arguing over Jiminy. In the episode "Ask Von Drake", Scar can be briefly seen being held by Rafiki just as Simba was in the film. In the episode "Goofy's Valentine Date", Scar was seen along with the other guests. Strangely enough, he (for some reason) does not appear in the show's tie-in film Mickey's House of Villains, not even as a cameo, and is, therefore, one of the only three Disney villains featured in that show who does not appear in that film at all, with other two beings Commander Rourke and Shere Khan because they are absent. For some reason, he never speaks in the show. Despite Scar not physically appearing in Mickey's House of Villains, it is believed that he took part in the takeover with the other Disney villains.
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom[]
In Adventure Land, Scar makes a deal with Hades, whereas if Scar could obtain the crystal of the magic kingdom, he would be granted immortality and rule over the Pride Lands forever.
He forces the hyenas to work for him again, deceptively convincing them that he is invincible. he tries to get them to start an elephant stampede to crush anyone who gets in his way, but they fail. When the Park guests injure Scar in front of the hyenas, Shenzi is the first to see through his lies, rallies up the pack and leaves.
After a conversation with Hades, Scar twice battles the park guests, the first time beating them, the next time, it's vice versa. Hades gives Scar one last chance and turns him into a devilish and destructive storm cloud as he battles the park guests again. Scar is ultimately defeated, and the park guests win. Later, at the end, he is sucked into a snow globe with Hades and all of the other he recruited.
Scar appears as both the main antagonist and final boss of the 1994 videogame adaptation The Lion King on Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.
Kingdom Hearts II[]
“ | Anger and jealousy turned the king of Pride Rock into a Heartless! Oh, your kingdom's gonna rise again... But this time, as the Pride Lands of Darkness! | „ |
~ Peg Leg Pete about Scar's transformation into a Heartless. |
Scar is a boss in the Pride Lands chapter and teams up with Peg Leg Pete. Upon Sora, Donald, and Goofy's arrival, Scar plans to devour them due to the famine affecting the Pride Lands, but Nala helps the trio escape. In the end, he faces Simba as in the movie, only he goes up the cliff and Pete reveals that Scar has become a Heartless. Sora, Donald, and Goofy join Simba to face the tyrannical lion who ends up losing before he was collapsing from exhaustion and dying.
“ | How does it feel to be king, hmm? | „ |
~ Scar's Ghost taunting Simba. |
His ghost was also a boss in Kingdom Hearts II. He looks like the living Scar, but he is darker in color and he has a dark aura around him.
Now a ghost-filled with hatred, he would haunt Simba, who was now king. This caused Simba to become extremely afraid. This made him the laughing stock of the hyenas, mainly Shenzi, Banzai and Ed. Simba seeked help, and went to the hyenas, asking if they knew of Scar's Ghost. They knew nothing and said Scar's Ghost only hangs out around fraidy cats. Immediately, Scar's Ghost appeared. He taunted Simba, asking what it was like to be king. Simba retreated, causing the hyenas to laugh maniacally. Simba went to his paradise, where he met Timon and Pumbaa, but even there he was not safe from the ghost and was still tormented. He was having doubts and Sora tried to snap him out of it, but it didn't work. Then Donald used his powers to create a fake ghost, and it taunted Simba until he overcame his fear and pounced on it.
Now facing his fears, he went back to the Pridelands. Scar's Ghost was already there, and it was now haunting Simba's wife Nala and Pumbaa. When Simba returned, the ghost confronted him, but Simba told it to get out, scaring it away. Soon after, all of the ghosts came and formed a giant Heartless beast called the Groundshaker. The beast attacked, and a large battle ensued. The Groundshaker took several hits, and it collapsed and disappeared. Simba claimed his place as king.

“ | Scar: [catches mouse and dangles it by its tail] Life's not fair, is it? You see I— well, I... shall never be king. And you... shall never see the light of another day. Adieu... [prepares to eat mouse, but is interrupted] Zazu: Didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food? Scar: What do you want? Zazu: I'm here to announce that King Mufasa is on his way, so you'd better have a good excuse for missing the ceremony this morning. Zazu: Oh, you wouldn't want me! I'd be so tough and gamey and... eww... Scar: Oh, Zazu, don't be ridiculous. All you need is a little garnish. Banzai: I thought things were bad under Mufasa. Scar: What did you say?! Banzai: I said Muf... I said, uh "Qué pasa?" Scar: Good. Now get out. Banzai: Mm... yeah, but — we're still hungry. Scar: Out! |

Scar: No. You're just not looking hard enough. Sarabi: It's over. There is nothing left. We have only one choice. We must leave Pride Rock. Scar: We're not going anywhere. Sarabi: Then you have sentenced us to death. Scar: Then so be it. Sarabi: You can't do that. Scar: I'm the king. I can do whatever I want. Sarabi: If you were half the king Mufasa was you would nev— Scar: [interrupts her by slapping in the face] I'M TEN TIMES THE KING MUFASA WAS! [sees Simba] Mufasa? No. You're dead. Sarabi: Mufasa? Simba: No. It's me. Sarabi: Simba? You're alive? How can that be? Simba: It doesn't matter; I'm home. Scar: Simba...? Simba! I'm a little surprised to see you, alive. [glares at Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed as they back away nervously] Simba: Give me one good reason why I shouldn't rip you apart. Scar: Oh, Simba, you must understand. The pressures of ruling a kingdom... Simba: ...Are no longer yours. Step down, Scar. Scar: Oh, oh, ye — Well, I would, heh, naturally, heh — however, there is one little problem. You see them? [points up to the Hyena Clan] They think I'M king. Nala: Well, we don't. Simba is the rightful king. Simba: The choice is yours, Scar. Either step down or fight. Scar: Oh, must it all end in violence? I'd hate to be responsible for the death of a family member. Wouldn't you agree, Simba? Simba: That's not gonna work, Scar. I've put it behind me. Scar: Eh, but what about your faithful subjects? Have they put it behind them? Nala: Simba, what is he talking about? Scar: Ahh, so you haven't told them your little secret. Well, Simba, now's your chance to tell them. Tell them who is responsible for Mufasa's death! Simba: I am. Sarabi: It's not true. Tell me it's not true. Simba: It's true. Scar: You see, he admits it! MURDERER! Simba: No. It was an accident. Scar: If it weren't for you, Mufasa would still be alive. It's your fault he's dead; do you deny it? Simba: No. Scar: Then... you're... GUILTY. Simba: No. I'm NOT a murderer. Scar: Oh, Simba, you're in trouble again. But this time, Daddy isn't here to save you. And now EVERYONE... KNOWS... WHY! Nala: SIMBA! [Simba almost falls of the rock as a thunderbolt suddenly strikes the ground, setting it on fire] Scar: Now this looks familiar. Hmm. Where have I seen this before? Let me think. Hmmm... hmmm. Oh yes, I remember. This is just the way your father looked before he died. [pierces Simba's paws with his razor-sharp claws and pulls him close to his face just like he did to Mufasa] And here's MY little secret: [whispers in Simba's ear] I killed Mufasa. Simba: NoooooOOOO! [jumps on Scar] MURDERER! Scar: No, Simba, please. Simba: Tell them the truth! Scar: Truth? But truth is in the eye of the behold — [Simba presses his paw down on Scar's throat] Scar: llgkkk! And, turn the Pride Lands into a wasteland. Ushari: Yes! And then, we reptiles can take over everything! Under your rule, of course. Scar: Oh, yes, Ushari. You can have whatever's left... And, I'll need you for the next part of my plan. Ushari: You will? Scar: Yes. Have I ever told you how I got my scar? Ushari: No. No, you haven't. Reception[]
Scar has received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences alike, who consider Scar to be one of Disney's greatest villains, with some stating that he was a better character than Simba. Critics who didn't like the film tended to enjoy Scar's characterization and Irons' performance. Irons himself said that compared to most villains he played, Scar "measures very highly," having "charm," "Machiavellian qualities" and being "iconic in some of the things he says. Irons would then win an Annie Award for Best Achievement for Voice Acting. Scar is also considered widely one of Disney's darkest villains due to the murder of his own brother, Mufasa. They described him as a perfect introduction to the elements of greed, depravity, and fascism. Despite worldwide acclaim, he did meet some mild controversy, being perceived as a racist, effeminate and homophobic and fans did complain he was less enjoyable after becoming king. Critics and parents alike warn that Scar's behavior can frighten small children. Due to being one of Disney's most infamous villains, made especially infamous for his success in murdering Mufasa, Scar is one of the primary members of the Disney Villains franchise.
Trivia[]
- Before the The Lion Guard claimed Scar's birth name to be Askari (the Swahili word for 'soldier' or 'military'), written works such as the book The Lion King: Six New Adventures had his name as Taka, which is Swahili for 'trash' or 'garbage'. However, the stories were confirmed to be non-canon with the films and television series.
- Although his nickname did not come from Swahili, his real name in Swahili is never mentioned outside of an Instagram post by Ford Riley stating that Scar's original name was 'Askari.'
- He is ranked 3rd in the Top 30 Disney Villains by DVD Dizzy.
- In an earlier draft for The Lion King, Scar had a snake minion. Scar would eventually have a snake minion in the form of Ushari in The Lion Guard. However, whilst Ushari was a cobra, the deleted snake minion was a rock python.
- He was also originally a rogue lion with no relation with Mufasa but the producers decided later to make Scar the brother of Mufasa in order to make the plot more interesting. This is the reason why Mufasa and Scar look very different from each other.
- According to Andreas Deja, Scar is modelled after his voice actor Jeremy Irons.
- Scar is notable for being voiced by Jeremy Irons and animated by Andreas Deja (who also animated Jafar, Alameda Slim, Dr. Frankenollie, and Gaston).
- In Disney's Hercules, the Nemean Lion that Hades sends to fight Hercules bears an exact resemblance to Scar after it is killed and turned into a skin by the former. Given that Andreas Deja was the lead animator of the film, this cameo was likely a reference to his previous work; and may also be a reference to Zazu's joke that Scar could make "handsome throw rug" as well.
- Scar is loosely based on real-life dictator Adolf Hitler; as the scene where Scar is overlooking his hyena army mimics the scene where Hitler over looks his army and stretches out his hand over them.
- Scar is the first of three Disney villains to be blood related to the film's main protagonist. He would later be followed by Hades and King Runeard.
- He is also the third to have familial ties to the main protagonist, after The Evil Queen and Lady Tremaine.
- In various early drafts of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, Scar was written to be Kovu’s father, giving him a claim to rule the pride. Due to the incestous undertones that would've arisen with Kovu and Kiara being cousins once removed, this plot-point was written around with clarification in the final film that Scar was not Kovu's father.
- In an earlier draft for The Lion King, Scar was originally a baboon as the plot of the film would have been about a battle between lions and baboons. The only thing that was kept was the scar on his left eye.
- It's unknown whether Scar held Zira in high regard, as while he did tell her about the Roar of the Elders, he didn't bother to recruit her into his Army in the Lion Guard. This could be because he didn't know she lived in the Outlands. Out of universe, that was done to avoid continuity errors with The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, as Zira and the Outsiders attacked the Pride Lands while Kion was away at the Tree of Life after defeating Scar.
- Whenever Scar had hyenas as his minions, he always betrayed them. In the first film, Scar betrayed the Hyena Clan to try to escape his fate, which turned out to be his loss. In The Lion Guard, he betrayed Janja because he began to doubt his allegiance to him. However, unlike the last time he had considered that in case it did not work, he gave Janja false information before betraying him for things to turn in his favor, which almost worked.
- In the episode "Battle for the Pride Lands" of The Lion Guard, it is revealed that Scar got his scar from a cobra, who was a friend of an unnamed, malicious lion that Scar befriended. The lion promised to cure his scar if Scar agreed to do whatever he said, instead Scar destroyed him and the cobra with the roar. When Scar hoped that Mufasa would praise him for destroying the scheming lion, Mufasa teased him instead by nicknaming him "Scar". The poison from the cobra later made Scar's personality even darker than it already was.
- This means that Mufasa was partially responsible, albeit unintentionally, for Scar's villainy.
- According to Ford Riley, Scar's original name was "Askari" named after his ancestor and the founder of the original Lion Guard of the same name (who later on appears in Season 3) but was shortened down to "Scar" by Mufasa after he was bitten by the cobra.
- Scar is considered a foil to Mufasa, Simba, Kion, and Surak:
- Mufasa is a strong, benevolent ruler who cares for the welfare of his family, subjects, and kingdom; understanding the responsibility of being king and respecting the Circle of Life. Scar is a scheming tyrant who cares for no one but himself, having no qualms betraying his family (particularly his brother and nephew who love him unconditionally) and lets the Pride Lands fall to ruin from his irresponsibility and lack of regard for the Circle of Life. In The Lion Guard, where they appear as spirits, Mufasa appears in the clouds with a heavenly presence while Scar manifests in flames with a sinister appearance. Scar serves an example of what Mufasa would've become if he hadn't shown love and support for the Circle of Life.
- Scar and Simba both idealize being king as having power and respect, as shown in their musical numbers. (Be Prepared and I Just Can't Wait To Be King, respectively). They were friends with different species of animals (Scar was friends with the hyenas, while Simba befriended Timon and Pumbaa) and were lazy during the Pride Lands' deterioration. Though full of himself, Simba cared for those close to him, unlike his uncle. If Simba never learned that being king meant taking responsibility and refused to confront his past, he would've ended up like Scar.
- As the second-born, Scar and Kion were leaders of the Lion Guard, gifted with the Roar of the Elders. Unlike Scar, Kion loves his family and neither holds any jealousy of his older sister nor desire to rule, having a typical but otherwise healthy relationship with Kiara. Kion regulates using the Roar only when necessary and eventually evolves it, while Scar abused it's power and never learned more of its capabilities. Both also were affiliated with hyenas, but Kion had a genuine friendship with Jasiri whereas Scar betrayed both the Hyena Clan and Janja's as scapegoats or liabilities respectively. When they got their scars from cobra bites, Scar allowed its corruption to consume him while Kion resisted the influence and sought out a cure. At the end of the series, Kion's Lion Guard's term ends peacefully when they allow Vitani's to succeed them. Kion also becomes king, but of the Tree of Life through a loving union with Rani. Scar represents what Kion would've become if he lost control of the Roar, didn't become friends with Jasiri, turned against his friends, and didn't meet Rani.
- Surak and Scar both leave their claws out. Surak, unlike Scar, is a supportive uncle who loves and cares for his family and is content with his role in the Circle of Life. If Surak hadn't been there for his family and cared more about himself, he would've ended up like Scar too.
- Scar is a member of Disney's Sinister Cats, a sub-franchise of the mainline Disney Villains franchise.
- Though he left behind an infamous legacy after his death, Jasiri and Rani remarking Scar is well-known by hyenas and the Tree of Life, his demise being at the jaws of his hyena minions is not well known. Both Simba and Janja claim that Scar died in the fire of Pride Rock, while Zira believes that Scar was killed by Simba.
- Scar is pictured on one of the ten USA non-denominated commemorative postage stamps celebrating "Disney Villains", issued as a pane of twenty stamps on July 15, 2017. The set was issued in a single sheet of twenty stamps. The price of each stamp on day of issue was 49 cents. The other villains depicted in this issue are the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Honest John from Pinocchio, Lady Tremaine from Cinderella, the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
- At around 29 minutes, Jim Cummings (the voice of Ed the Hyena) had to fill in for Jeremy Irons for the finale of "Be Prepared". Irons threw out his voice after performing the line, "You won't get a sniff without me!" The rest of his recording didn't sound powerful enough.
- When Scar was the leader of his Lion Guard, he seems to have been the youngest member because the other lions were clearly adult and fully grown, while Scar was a teenager.
- Naturally, this could imply that when Scar led the Lion Guard at Kion's age, he recruited teenage members of his Pride.
- Scar is Jeremy Irons' second voice acting film role.
- Scar is the first Disney villain to kill a major character onscreen as well as a major character that he's related to.
- Originally, Scar was going to send Nala as a fully grown lion away from Pride Rock because she ignored his romantic approaches, after which she finds Simba alive as well with Timon and Pumbaa. In doing so, he would have additionally introduced the hyenas into the Pride Lands when the lionesses and Zazu initiate a rebellion against his decision to exile Nala. This idea was ultimately abandoned, as sexual harassment was considered improper in a family film and may have gotten the film a PG-13 rating, and it took too long to finish. However, the stage musical adaptation includes this plot development as part of director Julie Taymor's efforts to expand the female characters' presence in the story.
- In early production, Scar was supposed to sing a song titled Thanks to Me, in which he boasts to the hyenas over murdering Mufasa and sending Simba to his supposed death. The filmmakers had decided that a song building up to the latter was more thematically appropriate, and thus reworked the lyrics and the song to precede the stampede.
- In the first conversation between Scar and Simba, Simba comments to Scar, "You're so weird..." to which Scar retorts a cryptic, "You have no idea...", a line spoken by Jeremy Irons in similar fashion in Reversal of Fortune (1990).
- Jeremy Irons refused the role due to not being comfortable going from the dramatic performance as Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune (1990) to a comedic role. Once he came in, however, Irons' performance even inspired the writers to incorporate more of his acting as von Bülow - even adding one of that character's lines, "You have no idea" - and animator Andreas Deja to watch both Reversal of Fortune (1990) and Damage (1992) to pick up Irons' facial traits and tics.
- Jeremy Irons was reluctant to lend his voice as Scar, until he saw the animation and fell in love with the character.
- When Scar is signing along to 'Lovely Bunch of Coconuts' with Zazu, he holds up a baboon skull and moves its jaw to the lyrics. While the context is very different from the original play, one can't help but be reminded by the Shakespearean inspiration of the film.
- Jeremy Irons came prepared with cigarettes for his voice recordings. He was smoking including during Be Prepared. Rob Minkoff stated that the people involved in the making of the movie had to edit out all of the smoking.
- Near the start of the film, Scar tells a mouse that himself will never be King and the mouse will die. Ironically, Scar does become 'King' later in the film while the mouse lives after Zazu prevented him from eating the mouse. This also foreshadows Scar's death at the end when the hyenas devour him alive.
- During the early stages of production, the film's climax had a different ending. After their battle on top of Pride Rock, Scar is left hanging on the edge of a rock and asks Simba for mercy, saying that Simba is not like him, that he is not a murderer, and asks for his forgiveness. Simba pulls him up, but he's thrown over by Scar to the raging fire below and lands safely into a tree. Scar, believing Simba to be dead, starts laughing over his victory before he is burned alive by the fire. The sequence was story boarded, but it was not used, being considered too dark for a Disney film.
- Unlike the other lions, Scar's claws are always displayed throughout the movie.
- If it wasn't for Scar telling Simba that he killed Mufasa, he would have most likely succeeded in killing Simba.
- Despite not being involved with them, Scar was indirectly responsible for the formation of The Lion Guard's journey to the Tree of Life, the formation of Makucha's Army, and the eventual marriage between Kion and Rani.
- Ironically unlike Zira, Scar never taunts Kion for having a Lion Guard not made up of lions.
- Scar is one of only five Disney villains ever nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain, the others being Hector Barbossa and Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Jadis the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear from Toy Story 3.
- Scar suffers from the Seven Deadly Sins.
- Envy: He is envious of his brother and nephew for getting the throne, so he plotted each of their deaths for it (though was only successful on Mufasa).
- Pride: He believes himself to be deserving of power. He also refuses to abandon the Pride Lands, even if it means the death of his subjects and hates when people question his rule.
- Wrath: He gets enraged when he is tested, like how Mufasa is mentioned to him and that he attacks Sarabi for comparing him unfavorably to his deceased brother. During The Lion Guard, he goes out of his way to order his minions to attack the Pride Lands out of spite.
- Sloth: He is indolent even as the Pride Lands fall into ruin.
- Gluttony: He enjoys food while letting the rest of his kingdom, including his loyal followers, starve.
- Greed: He wants power and will destroy anyone to get it.
- Lust: In a deleted scene, and in the stage adaptation, he tries to force himself on Nala, eager to produce heirs. Other than that, he's pleased by his newfound position as the unofficial King of the Pride Lands.
- In the flashback of Battle for the Pride Lands, Scar's scar is first shown to be outside his eyebrow, but is later shown to have gone through it, as in the film, during the scene where Scar kills his Guard.
- Scar is the first Disney Villain to murder a member of his own family, followed by Mor'du from Brave.
- When Simba was a cub, he always referred to Scar as Uncle Scar, due to the fact that he was his uncle and thus viewed him as any other family member. But when he was an adult, he only referred to Scar by his name, and he didn't say "Uncle" after seeing what kind of a monster Scar was and thus never viewed him as family.
