Bravo! Didn’t think you’d catch on to that! Now, what is the conclusion you’ve drawn?
~ Scar´s most famous quote.

Scar is a major antagonist of the 2024 Chinese open-world Science-fantasy video game Wuthering Waves game, Wuthering Waves.

He is a sadistic Fractsidus Overseer that values power above all else, and seeks to perpetuate chaos and suffering on the path to fulfilling the Fractsidus' goal of enacting a new Lament. As one of the Overseers of the Fractsidus, he believes humanity must undergo a mass evolution through embracing Tacet Discords.

He was voiced by Bu Yi in Chinese, Anan Furuya in Japanese, Jang Seo-hwa in Korean, and Shai Matheson in English.

Appearance[]

Scar appears to be a young man in his early to late twenties. He is slim, of average height, and has spiky white hair with red roots. He has numerous scars on his face with a larger scar on the right side of his face with another darker scar cutting vertically through his right eye, and a horizontal scar on his left cheek. His right eye is red and his left eye is grey. He also has golden dangling earrings which can be described as upside-down fleur-de-lises. His attire consists of a mostly red and grey outfit. His pants are white but fade to red towards the bottom, which is also flared. On top of his pants, he has grey garters that start from his hips and end a little below the knee. Apart from this, Scar also wears black gloves that have red fingertips and bright red boots.

His "Aberrant Nightmare" transformation appears to be a large, demonic, six-eyed, bipebal, dark-skinned creature with a ram head with purple energy flaring from the ends of his clothes and hair.

Personality[]

Scar appears to be a calm, yet opportunistic individual who is passionate about his ideals, actively seeking out individuals whom he deems worthy to join Fractsidus and undertake the transformative process with Tacet Discords. Scar opposes Huanglong’s efforts to suppress the Tacet Discords. His idea of a new world after harrowing turmoil reflects a twisted sense of evolution. He encourages individuals, especially Rover, whom he views as a kindred black lamb- doomed to stand out unfavorably from the rest- to join the Fractsidus. He is also shown to be very dramatic, cunning, and manipulative when discussing his ideals, which can be shown in his first encounter with Rover. Scar also openly introduces himself as a "cruel and twisted maniac". He presents himself as very honest and genuine despite capturing Yangyang, in an attempt to earn Rover's trust.

Scar tells the story of Qichi Village using a “fable” about a shepherd, a flock of lambs, and a black lamb as an analogy, exemplifying a part of his playful and creative side. He also appears to value multiple perspectives, illustrating a conscientious side to his character. Scar seems to value banter and games, as he didn’t want the Rover to cheat without looking for answers first. However, he then states that the people who succumbed to their grief (the lambs who sacrificed the black lamb) “had it coming”. Scar also claims that he self-identifies with the black lamb, being a rebel against the shepherd who breaks the rules.

Powers and Abilities[]

Like all Resonators, Scar possesses a Tacet Mark, with his being located across his neck. He possesses a unique Forte formed from his personality and experiences. His Forte enables him to create rifts in space, and can transform into a new form called Aberrant Nightmare that he uses in battle.

Powers[]

  • Superhuman Speed: Scar can move faster than non-Resonators and even actual Resonators, making it very difficult for one to be able to react to him. Scar is also very resistant or even outright immune to the side effects of moving at such speeds. In battle with Qiuyuan, despite struggling to keep up, he managed to deftly keep up with Qiuyuan's speed with respectable levels of skill, allowing him to briefly hold his own.
  • Spatial Manipulation: Scar can create rifts in space that he uses as a means of transportation. When Scar plants one of his cards on the ground, it allows him to create a distortion in space, which he is able to use to seal people away within a dimensional pocket realm. Scar was first shown using this ability to trap Yangyang at the start of his confrontation with Rover in Qichi Village, as well using it during Dreamcatchers in the Secret Gardens to portal Cristoforo into the Fabricatorium, so that he could steal the Threnodian Leviathan's gem from Rover before Rover was able to secure it.

Guess you won't need my self-introduction. Aw, I spent so much time on it.
~ Scar to Rover before preparing his cards.
  • Unending Destruction Cards: Scar can use a pair of explosive mystical cards that bear the face of rams on their surface, which he can fan and throw in order to either bombard his opponents, portal away individuals at long-range, or disintegrate them into ashes. Scar also uses these cards to revert back to human form.

Aberrant Nightmare[]

A secondary component of his Forte, Scar often transforms into a large ram-like creature in combat known as the Aberrant Nightmare. He used this against Rover in their first battle in Qichi Village after using his cards to flee through a portal into his domain, and again to intercept Rover's Rinascitan allies before they were able to join Rover in the Journeying Paradise once Rover linked Augusta's Anchor Stone with material reality. He also fought Qiuyuan in this form during the same conflict, but struggled to gain an advantage before Phrolova summoned the Dark Tide.

  • Weapon Creation:

Thanks to his enhanced strength, Scar can create blades in his arms made of a purple energy reminiscent of the color of his aura as a result of his Forte.

  • Sharp Claws:

Imbued with a destructive nature, Scar uses a pair of sharp claws that he often uses to ground slam while in his Aberrant Nightmare form.

Abilities[]

  • Peak human martial prowess: Scar possesses peak human unarmed combat capabilities (especially with kung fu), with his physical attacks being strong enough to send individuals flying through the air, and fast enough to strike multiple opponents in quick succession. He was shown kicking several Septimontian warriors at breakneck speed shortly after his escape from his Huanglong prison cell, sending them flying, while also striking fast enough to barrage multiple opponents in short succession. During his fight with Qiuyuan during the peak of the Leviathan Crisis, despite Qiuyuan's claim that he would incapacitate Scar in one blow, Scar respectably held his own long enough for Phrolova to arrive and unleash the Dark Tide on Rover's Rinascitan allies.

Relationships[]

Rover[]

Scar maintains an almost predatory obsession with Rover, clinging to his desires to see Rover join their rank in spite of their continual resistance, and even imprisonment of him.

Phrolova[]

Scar and Phrolova formerly maintained a tentative, if passive aggressive relationship as fellow Overseers, sharing a fragile degree of tolerance built on their shared goals and plans in Huanglong. However, this crumbled when Phrolova later left the Fractsidus after fulfilling her promise to Cristoforo to aid him against Rover in their failed attempt to resurrect Leviathan, with him angrily threatening to go after her in contempt before being held back by Schwarzloch.

Cristoforo[]

Unlike his relationship with Phrolova, Scar and Cristoforo share a great degree of respect for one another due to their similar, yet compatible philosophies, seen clearly at the end of Dawn Breaks on Dark Tides. The two men reflected on their worldviews, with Cristoforo speaking on how he seeks to "save" humanity by forcing them to transcend their limits, in contrast to Scar's fatalistic beliefs that the world is inherent chaotic, and thus only deserving of destruction. However, Scar relayed that he respected and admired Cristoforo for the underlying tragedies and destruction that define each of his stories, joking that Cristoforo "might be more insane than he is," and that while Cristoforo seeks to destroy to save, he seeks to save to destroy, and that he will usher those that fail to endure the scorched earth transcendence of Cristoforo's idealized world into an "eternity of chaos and suffering," demonstrating clear shared understanding and a willingness to work with one another.

Schwarzloch[]

Being his leader-in-command, Scar has been implied to have a natural degree of respect for him. While having not been shown interacting extensively with the Grand Architect, Scar demonstrated a willingness to stand down and listen at the end of Dawn Breaks on Dark Tides after being told to stand down from pursuing Phrolova.

Trivia[]

  • Scar's Aberrant Nightmare form is reminiscent of theological and demonological depictions of rams and goats in association with symbols of evil and Satanic imagery. Due to his ram form's half-man, half-ram appearance, a notable inspiration may be the Baphomet, a similar looking demonic goat idol that is popularly rooted in historical Western esotericism and occultist scripture.
  • Because of his design and charisma, Scar is a fan favorite character amongst the Wuthering Waves community. His English voice actor, Shai Matterson, personally recognized his status as a community fan favorite in a YouTube interview.
  • In the beta tests of the game, Scar originally had a black stripe on his pants, but this was changed following backlash from Chinese players who found a specific detail of his design to be inappropriate (This is due to China being culturally conservative in regards to the depiction of sexual innuendos, which often leads to the censorship of sexual imagery and references in media.) The alteration also included the removal of a prominent zipper in his crotch area, which some fans had humorously nicknamed "Onigiri."
