~ Scarman's catchphrase.
Det. Hollander: Put down the knife!
Brad: It's not a knife, it's only a pair of garden shears simply modified so I can do interesting things like... cut off heads.
~ Scarman's most famous quote.

Brad Walker, better known for his killer name Scarman is the main antagonist of the 2000 Australian slasher film Cut.

Formerly a cinema actor, Brad gets fed up with his despotic director who humiliated him and murders her in cold blood, but gets murdered back by the co-actress of the film while attempting to rape and murder her. This would not be the end of Brad, as his spirit remained inside the unfinished movie's negative, murdering everyone who attempted to complete it or even watch it.

He was portrayed by Frank Roberts.

Biography[]

Everything around Brad's past is a mystery. It is only known that Brad was the lead actor of fictional Australian low-budget slasher film Hot Blooded, also portraying its main villain, the murderous Scarman. However, director Hillary Jacobs is not happy with Brad's performance and humiliates him in front of his colleagues. She makes the decision to fire him, but Brad, fed up with her bad treatments, murders her in her office. Co-actress Vanessa Turnbill enters the office at the unfortunate moment of Brad's murderous breakdown, and he attempts to murder her too. Vanessa gets ultimately saved by the P.A man Lossman who breaks in the office at the moment of the fight, distracting Brad, and giving Vanessa a chance to take his prop shears and kill him. However, Brad manages to curse Hot Blooded, killing everyone who attempts to finish the film, or even watch it. The film gets the reputation of being cursed after entire film crews who were trying to finish the movie were found horribly slaughtered. This didn't stop a bunch of film students to try to complete Hot Blooded as a graduation grade. The Scarman once again comes back to life, with his inseparable modified pruning shears, decided to fill the movie theaters with blood.

Hot Blooded[]

Braddeath

Brad's death.

Everything starts in a scene of the film Hot Blooded were Chloe (Vanessa's character) is murdered by the Scarman slicing her throat. The scene angers the director Hilary Jacobs, as Brad "murdered" her too soon and missed a few lines. This might not be Brad's first mistake, as she gets fed up of him and publicly humiliates him. Vanessa reprimands Brad too, as he apparently was touching her breasts in-scene even if he wasn't supposed too. Depressed, Brad goes to Hilary's office asking for one more chance, but finds her degrading him further more, how his acting belonged as a clown in shopping malls and that he could put a monkey in Scarman's suit and would do a better job than him. She would ask Brad's agent to use his services of the film (in other words, firing him) and search for a proper replacement. Having enough of her insults, Brad puts his mask on and cuts his own thumb with his modified pruning shears in front of Hilary, showing her that they are not prop. She screams as Brad stabs her to death and cuts her tongue out. Vanessa enters her office, only to find Hilary's butchered corpse on a couch. Brad tries to murder her, but knowing that he had some crush on her (thanks to his previous sexual harassment) she offers him to have sex in exchange of sparing her life. Brad agrees, but before he has the chance to take his clothes off, Vanessa kicks him and they both start fighting, with her trying to get his pruning shears. The P.A man Lossman suddenly enters the office looking for Hilary which ends up distracting Brad, and Vanessa takes this chance to get the shears and stab him in the throat, instantly killing him. For some unknown reason, Brad gets electrocuted. It is not clearly stated why but it might have been a hidden voice-changer mechanism inside the mask malfunctioning from the damage. Whatever it was, Brad's corpse gETS horribly charred as a product of the electrocution. Thanks to Hilary's death, the movie was left unfinished. The shady events that lead to her murder made the movie popular and a target for multiple directors who would attempt to finish it. However, the movie would gain an even worse reputation as anyone who tried to finish it would be found murdered in mysterious ways (like a producer being electrocuted, or a young director found with his throat slit open inside a movie theater). It gained fame as a cursed film, and became feared at the point of being forbidden in the community.

The Scarman Returns[]

Twelve years later after the events, Lossman is now a film teacher in some place in Australia. He tells his students about the events of Hot Blooded's filming as a form of explaining them why he didn't include the slasher genre in his course. However, more than scaring them, they saw it as a way of gaining extra money and a graduation grade, much at Lossman's disapproval, who saw the film as a nightmare. Hester and Raffy (producer and director respectively) arranged the preparations of the film by getting funded by the original producer's widow, and hiring Vanessa Turnbill, the original co-star of the film.

It all would go awry when the original film is screened in a theater with the entire cast before being remade. Vanessa couldn't bare remembering that moment again, and walks away from the place. When watching the film, Raffy finds out that her friends were murdered right in their seats, all of them with their throats slit. At the end, it was all a joke meant for Raffy as a way of showing her acting and make up made by her friend Julie Bardot (who worked in the film). Despite being a joke, the Scarman was summoned to this place and brutally murdered the theater'S projectionist off-screen, disemboweling him while alive. His body would be later found by a worker of the place.

They return to the house were the original movie was filmed. There, the caretaker Mr. Drivett tells them the terms and conditions about using the house, which are breaking nothing, not bringing drugs nor alcoholic drinks. Brad's apparition starts haunting some of the members of the crew, who confuse him as Bobby Doog, the actor playing Scarman in the current filming and one of their friends. The filming would be turned difficult as Vanessa couldn't get the opening scene were she is supposed to drive a car well, as she doesn't know how to drive. As this happens, Cassie Woolf and Paulie Morrelli (both the wardrove manager and boom operator respectively) were having sex in the kitchen of the house when soon the Scarman materializes in front of them. Cassie notices him and mistakes him for Bobby, but begins to feel uncomfortable when he picks up a cleaver of the table. She tries to warn Paulie, but it's to late, as the Scarman decapitates him with one quick swing, leaving his head on the floor. Scared, Cassie tries to escape, only to find herself locked in the kitchen along with the Scarman. She gives one fight to him using objects of the kitchen, but at the end she gets killed when the Scarman throws the cleaver to her chest. The crew returns to the hotel thinking that Cassie escaped with Paulie. Lossman and Vanessa discuss about Brad's influence over them even before the events, as they had horrible nightmares every night even after twelve years. She wonders why she returned to make this film, and tries to convince herself that he did it to face her biggest trauma and fear, but it ended being worse.

Next day, Raffy and Hester get interrogated by detectives called Hollander and Carter, who are trying to connect the murder of the projectionist with another murder of a woman killed in the same theater years ago. With the murder of the projectionist, Raffy believes both Paulie and Cassie suffered the same fate, and is tempted to end with the film, but is encouraged by Hester to keep going. Hester kisses her (apparently she was a lesbian) and exits the room.

That night they return to the house, but notice that some of Scarman's wardrobe vanished, included two masks (initially, there were three masks) and Bobby has the only one left. Meanwhile, the Scarman manages to kill Jim on his van while he was trying to fix the electricity of the place, taking advantage that he confused him with Bobby. Outside of the house, Hester tries to call the police about the disappearance of his two friends, but it wouldn't last much, as he soon finds Cassie's bloody corpse falling out of a tree above her.

Scarmankills4

Scarman killing Hester.

Hester runs for her life as she is soon being chased by the Scarman in the enormous garden of the house, and tries to hide of him in an abandoned depot. This didn't prove useful as Scarman materialized inside the depot, forcing Hester to fight him with a hacksaw in a futile attempt of escaping him, but she only gets wounded when the Scarman cuts his belly open with the shears. The struggle was so much that Hester accidentally activates a machine made to cut big chunks of wood in half, machine that Scarman uses it to pop her head like an oversized meat ball.

The Scarman also gets rid of his replacement Bobby by slicing his throat, with the intentions of taking his place in the filming and kill the resting members with ease. Raffy mistakes him for Bobby and calls him for the next scene, that involves impaling Vanessa with the shears and open her ribcage. Of course, she gives him prop shears, but the Scarman replaces it for the real ones. A scared Martha (funder and wife of the original producer who got murdered by the Scarman) visits the house to warn Lossman about the true evil nature of the film, that the only solution was to destroy the original roll or otherwise they'll all die. Lossman stops the scene before Scarman has the chance to murder Vanessa and they escape the house, with the exception of Damien who keeps filming the scene. As a result, the Scarman kills him with a single stab to the eye. Lossman returns to the house to find Martha, Vanessa returns because she thinks she can kill the Scarman again and Raffy goes after her. Julie and Rick are the last members of the crew to be murdered by the Scarman, as they lock themselves in the car while hiding of him. He takes advantage of it by setting the car on fire with gasoline. Julie falls out trying to escape, and is burned to death by the Scarman. Rick, on the other hand, dies when the car explodes.

The Final Girls[]

Scarmankillslossman

Inside the house, the last members find the body of the caretaker Mr. Drivett, hanging on a chandelier like an animal in the slaughterhouse. A weak Martha later dies of a stroke when she founds the body. Lossman explains that the only way to kill the Scarman is to destroy the rolls of the film, as he lived inside it as a character, fueled by the 'creative' energy coming out of it. As they attempt to destroy them, Lossman is brutally attacked by the Scarman when he impales his throat with the shears, and later targets the final girls, with most of his attention going to his killer: Vanessa. She provokes him into going after her so Raffy can burn the film rolls, but is interrupted by the detectives who were visiting the house. The rolls who were already burned deeply affected Scarman's body, who was starting to melt right when he was about to kill Vanessa. The burns were so high that they forced him to take off his mask, exposing his charred, deformed face to the light. Detective Hollander tries to arrest him once Brad jumps out of a 13-feet stairway unwounded, giving him hints that he is not human. Hollander shoots him, but Brad takes every shot exhaling a sinister chuckle, and beheads Hollander with a single swing. Detective Carter tries to fight the Scarman but runs away when she sees that he is extremely resilient to punches and bullets, and ends up killed when Brad makes her fall by throwing his shears to her back, impaling her in a garden faucet.

Vanessa, who hasn't even moved from the bathroom, is forced to jump out of a window when Brad corners her, greatly hurting her back. Brad attempts to burn an incapacitated Vanessa to death, and almost succeeds until Raffy burns the final rolls of the film, making him melt in front of an horrified Vanessa. With enough forces, Brad makes a gasoline path for her and turns it on fire, and then goes for Raffy to stop her for burning the rolls. He manages to wound her, but he didn't foreseen that Lossman survived his attack and starts burning the lasting reels. Finally, the essence of the murderous creature is vanished and Scarman melts to his doom, ending his with career of death for good.

Return[]

Scarmanreturns

Raffy, Lossman and Vanessa are the only survivors of the Hot Blooded last massacre, with these last two being wounded. Unfortunately for them, they were not the only ones who survived that night. A winter night in New York inside a college reveals that a single remaining copy of Hot Blooded exists, as an extremely "rare" film who has status of being cursed. The film is screened in front of an entire class, and from the electric reels Scarman returns once again.

Personality[]

Cold and twisted, the Scarman is an unscrupulous killer who has little to none human traits at all. It is stated that his darker side come arose after his humiliation, but is somehow stated that Brad was pretty much twisted even before turning into a monster. Sadistic and cruel, he takes advantage of his powers to give his victims mixed painful deaths, and is determined to terrify them as much as possible before killing them. He murders out of vengeance, but is clear that he himself has taken joy in the slaughter of people, all of this to fill his god complex and to follow his status as an urban legend, status that he plans to keep by tainting it with the blood of the innocent.
