~ Rune Lord's last words to Schezo. |
Schezo Wegey (シェゾ・ウィグィィ, Shezo Wigwī), also known as Devious in the first arcade game's localization, is a minor antagonist in Madou Monogatari 2, the protagonist of its prequel, Madou Monogatari S and later the protagonist of Madou Monogatari Madoushi no Tou. He's also a supporting character of its puzzle battle spin-off series, Puyo Puyo.
As the reincarnation of the great dark wizard, Rune Lord, Schezo wishes to cover the world in darkness and rule over it. In order to obtain enough power, he has kidnapped countless mages, trapped them in his monster guarded prison, and slowly absorbed their magic until they died. This would eventually backfire on him, leading to his brutal demise at the hands of one his captives, Arle Nadja.
In Japanese, he was originally voiced by Jemini Hirono and BB Kanemitsu, and is currently voiced by Masakazu Morita. In English, he was voiced by Ben Lepley.
Biography[]
Madou Monogatari S[]
Schezo was originally a brilliant young student of magic just like Arle Nadja. Though his educators had high hopes for him, the boredom of daily school life left the young mage longing for something more exciting.
During a school trip when he was fourteen, Schezo visited an abandoned dungeon where a great hero once did battle with a powerful evil wizard and saved the world by sealing him away. As Schezo looks around with his class group, he is sucked into a wall by a magic mirror, trapping him deep underground. Schezo explores the underground, trying to find an exit. During his journey to the surface, he discovered an ancient scroll that taught him his signature Areiyado spell, forged a pact with the sentient Dark Sword, and made a deal with a genie for power.
As he approaches the exit, Schezo enters Rune Lord's room. He reveals that he had spotted Schezo from the other side of the mirror, and looked into his past and future. Rune Lord was the evil wizard defeated by the hero two hundred years ago. Though his body had been destroyed, he made sure his soul lived on inside of Schezo. Schezo initially does not believe him, but wavers when Rune Lord informs Schezo that his full name, Schezo Wegey, means "The elegant one who will defile the gods" in Rune Lord's native language, and that he was born to succeed him and bring destruction to the world. He tries to convince Schezo to join his side, but Schezo screams that he has no interest in taking the path of the dark side and angrily attacks Rune Lord. Rune Lord is defeated by Schezo, but he says to himself that the seed of evil in Schezo's heart had already begun to sprout. With a reassured look on his face, Rune Lord dies in peace, knowing his successor would not disappoint him.
Schezo escapes the dungeon, but notably shocked by everything he has learned about himself, briefly falls silent before bursting into maniacal laughter. Now amazed by his new powers, Schezo vows to follow his destiny as Rune Lord's successor and begins to dedicate all of his efforts in the path of a dark wizard.
Madou Monogatari 2[]

Schezo casts an ancient sleep spell on Arle.
Over a century has passed since Schezo's school days. He is now a fully fledged dark wizard, and spends most of his time searching for powerful mages to kill and absorb their energy.
Schezo encounters the young adventurer Arle Nadja as she heads out on a journey to apply in her dream magic school. Impressed by her magical powers, he ambushes her and claims that he's after her magic. Schezo's aggressive approach creeps Arle out, with her thinking that he's trying to accost her sexually. Schezo uses a sleep spell on Arle and locks her inside his dungeon to slowly absorb her magic.

When Arle wakes up, she seduces the two guards in front of her cell and escapes, as she approaches the surface, a furious Schezo attacks her, planning to kill her and take her powers all in one go. During the battle, Schezo's ancient spells initially take Arle by surprise, but she manages to sever his carotid artery, and later his head, securing her victory, or so she thought.
Schezo's severed head opens its eyes and curses Arle's name. It resumes attacking Arle by slamming against her. Arle wins the battle, destroying Schezo's head, and she moves on with her adventure.
In some versions, Schezo is not decapitated and is instead vaporized. In the book, he survives the battle.
Hachamecha Kimatsu Shiken[]
“ | I never could have imagined that... I, the one who was seduced by darkness, Schezo Wegey, the defiler of gods... would ever save the likes of you. Hah! I guess even the great Schezo... has gone soft... | „ |
~ Schezo's "last words". |
In continuities where Schezo survives his encounter with Arle, he is left with his pride and confidence shattered. He leaves his underlings behind and travels the world on his own, losing sight of his true objective. He starts attacking many strangers haphazardly, loudly shouting "You're all mine! I want you!" every time, becoming infamous as a local pervert. He even attacked Rulue once, despite her having no magic for him to absorb.
Eventually during his travels, he hears legends of a sealed treasure so powerful that it can give one the power to rule the world. Now remembering his goal to succeed Rune Lord, his search leads him to the Ancient Maze, old ruins created by a long gone civilization. There, he runs into Arle and yet again, he attempts to kill her. He is defeated once more, but this time, instead of flying into a rage, Schezo remains calm, and even lets Arle keep his ancient ring, as a form of punishment for himself for being so weak.

Schezo gets incapacitated by Phantom God.
He explores the maze and finds the treasure's guardian, Phantom God, who senses the wickedness in Schezo's heart, and deems him not worthy of his treasure. Schezo is unable to do anything, even his Areiyado Special could not even scratch him. Just as Phantom God is seemingly about to kill Schezo, Rulue and Arle rush in to save him, but they are both incapacitated instantly by Phantom God's attacks. Phantom God prepares to get rid all three intruders.
Using the last of his strength Schezo gives a command to his Dark Sword, and slashes the empty air in front of him, covering it in darkness. He pushes Rulue and Arle into the dark portal, saving them both. Arle urges Schezo to come with them, but he does not even have enough strength left to get up. Phantom God fires one last attack, making Schezo vanish.
Though he is presumed dead by Arle, Rulue and Lilith, Schezo was actually simply warped out of the maze, while also having any of his memories related to the treasure deleted to prevent him from trying to steal it again. With the events of his second defeat at the hands of Arle and his own sacrifice completely forgotten, Schezo went back to his usual antics, scouring the world for more powerful mages to kill and make himself stronger.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | O dark sword... Slash through my enemies! | „ |
~ Schezo speaks with his weapon and orders it to attack. |
- Eternal youth: Schezo is frequently described as having the appearance of a handsome young man in his twenties. Though his dialogue and knowledge imply that he hails from a long gone era. His wisdom in long lost spells might allow him to prevent death by aging. It's also possible that the reason he kills so many mages is to absorb their youth, keeping himself young forever. According to the official Madou Timeline, Schezo is 164 years older than Arle.
- Severed head: Even decapitated, Schezo is still able to fight, keeping himself alive through sheer hatred alone. In this state, Schezo is unable to use any magic, relying solely on strong headbutts to defeat his opponent as a last resort.
- Monster master: His evil deeds and strong powers have attracted many monsters to his side. Monsters often choose to serve strong beings due to them being weak individually. Notably, Schezo has a white dragon serve as the warden of his prison, while the outside is guarded by a giant mutant-like fleshy creature. These two prevent most of his victims from escaping.
- Dark Sword: An ancient blade that was sealed inside a wall in Rune Lord's dungeon. The sword can speak, and has a will of its own. After Schezo cleared its trial, the sword acknowledged him as its master, and now dutifully obeys his every command. In some versions, the sword is made of pure crystal, and is completely transparent. In Hachamecha Kimatsu Shiken, it was shown to be able to cut through space itself, with Schezo using it to create a portal to the Phantom Zone.
- Dark Energy: As a perk of dedicating his life to the dark arts, Schezo can sense dark energy in the air created by other Dark Wizards, and can even absorb it to make himself stronger. For instance, when Dark Matter filled the surrounding space with his magic, Witch reported feeling nauseous, wanting to puke, but Schezo felt giddy and said that the dark aura was very pleasant to his body.
Magic Spells[]
- Areiyado: A long forgotten spell that Schezo learned in Rune Lord's dungeon. Its power is unmatched by any modern magic. After years of training with it, Schezo enhanced the spell into the stronger Areiyado Special. In Madoushi no Tou, it is described as a wave of dark energy.
- Elemental magic: Schezo has mastered many of the elemental spells that Arle uses frequently. He considers them weak, basic level magic. Some of these spells include Flame Storm, Ice Storm and Thunder Storm.
- Sleep: A common magic spell that temporarily puts the target to sleep. Schezo uses it to render other mages defenseless, capturing them with ease.
