MacDonald "Mac" Gargan, better known by his alias Scorpion, is a supporting antagonist in the 2018 action-adventure superhero video game Marvel's Spider-Man and a minor antagonist in its 2023 sequel Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
He is an adaptation of the Marvel Comics supervillain of the same name, but is also a somewhat more sinister take on the character.
He is voiced by Jason Spisak, who also voiced Jason Dante in Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Penguin in Batman: The Telltale Series, Raymond "Skizzo" Sarkozi in Days Gone, Joker in Batman: Hush, Deag Ranak in Doom Eternal and Silco in Arcane.
Biography[]
Past[]
MacDonald Gargan was a a violent small-time criminal who leaped at the chance to become more powerful when he was selected by J. Jonah Jameson to be empowered via scientific experiments so as to be made capable of defeating Spider-Man, who Jameson has always regarded as a menace. Unfortunately, as Jameson put it, he was unaware that Gargan was "a violent criminal with a poisoning fetish." Empowered and outfitted with armor that boasted a mechanical tail, Mac became "Scorpion", and was one of Spider-Man's more formidable enemies before finally being defeated by Spider-Man and imprisoned in The Raft prison.

~ Scorpion after poisoning Spider-Man. |
In 2018 though, Scorpion is freed alongside Electro, Vulture, Rhino, and Mr. Negative by Doctor Octopus. In exchange for wiping away the significant gambling debts that Gargan had accumulated, Doctor Octopus expects Scorpion to do his part to sow chaos in New York City as a means of exposing Norman Osborn's corruption to the world. Scorpion's task (which he took to with relish), is an attempt to poison New York City's water supply. Spider-Man foils it but, whilst fighting Scorpion, is stung by him and injected with a potent venom that will kill him slowly, but not before subjecting Spider-Man to a horribly distorted nightmare version of reality in which New York City becomes flooded with an ocean of poison and Otto Octavius taunts Peter with how all of his attempts to do good ended up hurting those he loved.
After curing himself of the poison and saving his life, Spider-Man later confronts Scorpion and Rhino at a shipping yard (where the two villains had nearly killed Miles Morales beforehand when they realized that he was snooping around). During the fight, Rhino and Scorpion constantly bicker with each other, as Scorpion considers Rhino to be stupid, and Rhino considers Scorpion to have no principles. Eventually, Spider-Man is able to beat both villains, tricking them into a storage container that is then bolted shut, leaving them to fight until being picked up by the New York City Police Department and returned to the Raft.

~ Scorpion's last words before being killed by Kraven. |
After becoming cell mates with Sandman, the Raft believes that they don’t have enough resources to contain both supervillains, so the staff decides to send Scorpion to Ravencroft for both his treatment, and to serve out his sentence there. However, this is short lived, as an attack on his and Mister Negative’s transport masterminded by Kraven the Hunter, causes Scorpion to go on the loose. A short time later, he is accidentally freed by Miles, who due to his powers disables all of Scorpion’s cuffs, but spares Miles for doing so despite scratching him with his tail. He then escapes during all the mayhem, only to get captured by Kraven’s hunters.
Kraven, then designs potential new indestructible tech suits for his hunters, and studies his poison from his tail for potential weapons for his hunters. A little while later, Kraven discovers Scorpion had escaped, killing one of his hunters in the process. Mac would then attempt to ambush the hunter, only for Kraven to quickly incapacitate him by putting him in a chokehold, and breaking off the end of his tail. Defenseless, Scorpion tries his best to attack Kraven, only to be choked once again and be addressed as a “disappointment”, seeing how weak Scorpion is. Kraven then stabs Scorpion in the stomach with his own broken tail tip, killing the sadistic psychopath once and for all.
Personality[]
The Scorpion was a violent, sadistic supervillain willing to kill anyone to benefit him and enjoyed taunting Spider-Man as he slowly died from the Scorpion's poison. He could also be very argumentative and disagreeable as seen when he argued repeatedly with Rhino. He is also shown to be very ungrateful and shows no remorse for anything he does, as he tried to kill Miles despite the fact the latter tried to save him from Kraven's attack and leaves him for dead after her poisoned him with is stinger
Powers and Abilities[]
- Scorpion Physiology: Due to the experiments funded by J. Jonah Jameson, the Scorpion had multiple characteristics associated with a scorpion.
- Durability: The Scorpion was a very tough foe, being able to withstand multiple pummelings from Spider-Man and surviving fighting Rhino inside a cargo container with no apparent injuries.
- Agility: The Scorpion was extremely fast and agile, being able to launch and dart around rooftops and the battlefield with inhuman ease.
Arsenal[]
- Stinger Tail: The Scorpion had a long green stinger tipped tail which he could use to poison his enemies with a lethal neurotoxin. It was broken by Kraven the Hunter who used the tail to kill Scorpion.
Trivia[]
- In the comics, Mac Gargan was an amateur private investigator before becoming Scorpion, not a violent criminal. This change in backstory thus renders this version of Scorpion somewhat less sympathetic than his original version.
- Miles Morales almost being killed by Rhino and Scorpion is somewhat ironic; in the Ultimate Marvel Universe where Miles first appeared, one of his first enemies as Spider-Man was that world's Scorpion.
- The strategy of using highly immersive illusions to try and break the mind of the hero is similar to both the strategy of Scorpion's fellow Spider-Man villain Mysterio and that of the Scarecrow in Batman: Arkham Asylum (a game Insomniac's Spider-Man has been repeatedly compared to).
