All changed however when he was given a mission by the evil Quan Chi to steal the Map of Elements from the Order of Light's Temple. While he was there, he was killed by Sub-Zero, a member of their rivals, the Lin Kuei. As a result, his entire family and clan were slaughtered by Quan Chi as a payment to Sub-Zero. Because of the fact he died, his soul was sent to the Netherrealm, While in there, he fought Sub-Zero again but was once again defeated. Scorpion vowed revenge on Sub-Zero due to his family's demise and his defeat.

Original Timeline

Mortal Kombat (1992)

Two years later, he was finally able to leave the Netherrealm and return to Earthrealm. He went there to participate in Shang Tsung's tournament to defeat Sub-Zero and avenge his family as well as his clan due to Quan Chi's deception. He was not able to make it to Sub-Zero at first, but after Liu Kang defeated Goro, he got his opportunity to kill Sub-Zero while he was unguarded. He did exactly that, finally getting revenge in his mind, so he was sent back to the Netherrealm.

Mortal Kombat II

Due to being in the Netherrealm, he was able to find out about a tournament hosted by Shao Kahn, the ruler of the Outworld. He was angered when he found out that Sub-Zero somehow returned back to life, unaware that it was actually his younger brother. So in order to finish what he started, Scorpion entered Shao Khan's tournament. However, during one of Sub-Zero's battles, he witnessed him sparing his opponent's life, which caused Scorpion to have some doubts about this person. He would eventually find out that this Sub-Zero was not his murderer, but in fact, his younger brother having taken up his older brother's mantle. To atone for slaying Sub-Zero's older brother, he decided to dedicate himself to protecting the new Sub-Zero.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

When Shao Khan invaded Earthrealm and tried to conquer Netherrealm but failed, Scorpion was accidentally set free. He initially didn't pledge allegiance to anyone, but when Shao Kahn noticed Scorpion's expertise in fighting, he decided to recruit him to his army. The alliance didn't last very long, however, as Scorpion discovered that when he learned Sub-Zero was one of Earth's chosen warriors and therefore one of Shao Kahn's targets. Due to this, Scorpion turned on Shao Khan and helped Earthrealm defeat him. They succeed and because of that, Scorpion returns back to the Netherrealm.

Mortal Kombat 4

At some point, Quan Chi was somehow able to convince that the new Sub-Zero was in some way responsible for his wife and child's death. After he was tricked into believing this, he swore revenge on Sub-Zero. However, just before Scorpion was about to kill Sub-Zero, Quan Chi appeared and told him that he was actually responsible for his family's death to get Scorpion to break his promise of protecting Sub-Zero. Quan Chi then attempted to banish Scorpion to the Netherrealm, but Scorpion, thinking quickly, tackled Quan Chi and banished both of them to the Netherrealm.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

During the many years that Scorpion and Quan Chi were in the Netherrealm, Quan Chi would be tortured by Scorpion. Quan Chi seemed to have very little chance of escaping because his powers were slowly weakening while Scorpions was getting stronger (the reason for this is they were in a different part of the realm). To escape, Quan Chi struck a deal with Drahmin and Moloch. The two fought off Scorpion, which gave Quan Chi enough time to escape the Netherrealm through a portal, Scorpion following him. Scorpion continued to chase Quan Chi until he found his way to Shang Tsung's Palace. While he was at the palace, he was ambushed by Drahmin and Moloch, who had just escaped the Netherrealm. Scorpion tried to fight them off, but they overpowered him and threw him into the Soulnado, believing it would eliminate the ninja once and for all.

Mortal Kombat: Deception

However, Scorpion was able to escape into the void and meet the Elder Gods. There, he also witnessed Raiden's sacrifice and Onaga beginning his conquest. The Elder Gods were aware of his presence as well as the incredible skills and abilities he possessed, so the made him the champion of the Elder Gods. His first mission was to destroy Onaga before he conquered all the realms. Scorpion is next seen in Konquest mode before Onaga goes to retrieve the Amulet from Quan Chi. Scorpion fights Shujinko in the name of the Elder Gods, but Shujinko won the battle. In his ending, it is said that Scorpion tracked Onaga through the realms to fight him, but it's unknown if he fought him, as it is known that Shujinko defeated Naga.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

Later on, Scorpion's alliance with the Elder Gods had fallen apart. This was due to the fact that they promised to resurrect the Shirai Ryu clan along with his wife and son, which although they did, they were brought back as Hellspawn. Scorpion was angry at what he thought of as their betrayal, and vowed revenge on the Elder Gods by removing the two things critical to their plans to prevent Armageddon, the Edenian brothers Taven and Daegon.

When Armageddon is summoned, Scorpion joins the Forces of Darkness. Scorpion is one of the consistent that makes it the highest, but he is also one of the many killed seen with his back pierced by Sub-Zero's Kori Blade, ending this version of Scorpion permanently.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Scorpion first appears in Liu Kang's chapter, attempting to kill Sub-Zero. Liu Kang saves Sub-Zero's life by shoving him out of the path of Scorpion's Kunai and deflecting it, which allows Sub-Zero to escape. Scorpion enraged that Sub-Zero got away again, challenges Liu Kang to a battle. Scorpion loses that battle and is badly injured in the process, reeling in pain. Scorpion is then suddenly surrounded, which confuses him causing Scorpion to vanish with The Flash appearing in his place.

Scorpion then reappears in the bat cave right in front of the dark knight. Scorpion believed he was Sub-Zero in disguise, so he challenged Batman, but due to his weekend state he was easily defeated and batman took him away for studying. Batman brought the unconscious Scorpion along in his investigation in Gotham City, but he was able to escape in the confusion of the Joker and Liu Kang's arrival.

He would later reunite with Quan Chi and also pull Sub-Zero into the Netherrealm. He challenged Sub-Zero to mortal combat believing he was his family's murderer with Quan Chi goading him. As Scorpion and Sub-Zero fought, the merging of the realms spread into the Netherrealm itself, allowing Quan Chi to escape. Scorpion then sent Sub-Zero back to Raiden and then was ordered to find Kitana.

Scorpion would later return to Gotham, where he was confronted by the Joker. Scorpion didn't have the patience to deal with him at first, and he tried walking away but became enraged when he was struck from behind by The Joker, so Scorpion fought him. Scorpion was easily able to defeat the Joker. Scorpion decided to spare his life and teleported to Themyscira, where he encountered Wonder Woman. He told Wonder Woman of his mission to find the princess, but when Diana thought he was referring to her and offered her help, he refused her offer before challenging and defeating her in battle.

Scorpion would travel to Metropolis where he encountered Superman. Like with Wonder Woman, Scorpion refused Superman's help, and Scorpion replied with a fire covered kick. The kick shocked Superman, who realized that his powers were coming from sorcery. Due to Superman's weakness to magic, Scorpion was able to defeat him and pushed him to a car where he encountered Kitana. He quickly realized she was infected with the Kombat Rage, so he battled her, Scorpion was able to subdue Kitana but unable to hold her off for much longer, so he called out to Quan Chi.

Quan Chi later appeared along with Baraka and Shang Tsung. Quan Chi used his magic to place Kitana under his control. Quan Chi then spotted Shazam approaching and ordered the three to deal with him in the Netherrealm while he went to Raiden. The three sprang their trap, but they were defeated by Captain Marvel so they retreated. They followed after Quan Chi and Scorpion witnessed Quan Chi use the last of his magic to restore Kitana to sanity, pleading with Raiden to work with them to save the world.

Raiden agreed, and so both Forces of Light and Darkness united, with Scorpion and Sub-Zero teaming up to face Lex Luthor and Catwoman in the Wu Shi Academy. Luthor defeated both of them while under the Kombat Rage's influence. Scorpion then joined up with the United Forces of Light and Darkness on their journey to the merged Apokolips/Outworld and due to Dark Kahn's influence, he came under the effects of the Rage and faced the Flash in the final battle with the DC Universe.

Scorpion was knocked out as a result, but he revived in time to witness the realms be restored after Dark Kahn's destruction.

Alternate Timeline

Mortal Kombat (2011)

I am a dead man, but somehow you retained your mortality, which means you are vulnerable to death. I AM SCORPION! YOU KILLED ME IN COLD BLOOD!
~ Scorpion to Bi-Han.

Scorpion's backstory is similar to his original version. He was once a member of the Shirai Ryu, a clan of ninjas known for bringing Ninjitsu and other secret martial arts to Japan from China. He also had a wife and child. However, his entire clan and his wife and child were killed by Quan Chi who disguised himself as Sub-Zero, a ninja for the Lin Kuei rival clan, to frame him. Scorpion would die but was revived by Quan Chi to be his servant.

Under Quan Chi's command, Scorpion entered Shang Tsung's tournament to what he believed get revenge for the death of his family by killing Sub-Zero who he believed to be their killer. When Scorpion arrived, he immediately demanded that Shang Tsung let him fight Sub-Zero. However, he is challenged by Kung Lao. Scorpion is able to defeat Kung Lao and again demands to fight Sub-Zero, but Shang refuses, saying he would demand nothing, Shang Tsung then assigns Scorpion his next opponent, Nightwolf. Nightwolf tries to talk Scorpion down his path of revenge and that his aggression is misplaced, but Scorpion ignored him and beat Nightwolf in a fight. Scorpion, more sternly this time, again demanded to fade Sub-Zero. Scorpion's previous victories had impressed Shang Tsung enough, so he told Scorpion that he will have his fight against Sub-Zero soon enough.

Since Raiden had been having visions, he saw the future where Scorpion kills Sub-Zero and the latter is reborn as Noob Saibot, Raiden pleaded with Scorpion not to kill Sub-Zero. Scorpion refuses at first, but then Raiden promised Scorpion he would request that the Elder Gods bring back the Shirai Ryu clan. Scorpion thinks about the offer for a bit and nods his head saying yes.

Later Scorpion was by Lin Kuei assassins, Sektor and Cyrax who both mocked his family's death, but Scorpion kept his calm nature and stated that his clan would walk the earth again. Upon hearing this, an angered Cyrax shoved Scorpion, and Shang Tsung saw this as a challenge and declared that Scorpion would fight Cyrax and Sektor.

Eventually, Scorpion was able to defeat them, but right after he was confronted by his enemy Sub-Zero who disrespected his family and clan's death. Scorpion was enraged to hear this, so he took both of them to the Netherrealm. While there the two would fight in Mortal Kombat, Scorpion emerged victoriously but do to his deal decided to spare his life until Quan Chi appeared and urged Scorpion to kill Sub-Zero which Scorpion refused to do. Quan Chi, knowing Scorpion needed to be provoked, conjured up fake images of his family and clan being mercilessly slaughtered by Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero begged for Mercy saying it was not him, but Scorpion but didn't believe him, so Scorpion ripped the mask from his head, revealing a skull engulfed in flames.

Back in the throne room of Shang Tsung, Scorpion reappeared and Shang Tsung smiles in anticipation. Wordlessly, Scorpion held up a scorched skull with the spinal cord attached. Scorpion had killed Sub-Zero, breaking his deal with Raiden. His head hung low, Scorpion dropped the skull onto the floor shattering it and then he burst out a loud scream, then he burst into flames and disappeared. Near the first tournament's end, Scorpion fought alongside Quan Chi to best Liu Kang, the last Earthrealm warrior in the tournament, but even his and Quan Chi's combined power and effort were not enough to stop Liu Kang.

During Shao Khan's Mortal Kombat tournament, Scorpion was once again summoned by Quan Chi to fight Sub-Zero. While there, Scorpion quickly realized this was not the same Sub-Zero when the new Sub-Zero proclaimed he would fight in his fallen brother's honor. Scorpion proclaimed he had no honor and the two fought. Eventually Sub-Zero gained the upper hand, but just before he was going to finish Scorpion off some Lin Kuei cyborgs captured him giving Scorpion the opportunity to flee.

During Shao Khan's invasion, Scorpion was confronted by Raiden where he expressed his disappointment that he was still working for Quan Chi. Raiden requested to speak with Quan Chi, but Scorpion refused. Raiden angrily then accused Scorpion of not saving his family, which caused Scorpion to become enraged. The two of them then battle, but Scorpion lost and was teleported away as Quan Chi appeared.

Mortal Kombat 11

After eons, I learned the truth. Kronika was not alone. She was one of many Titans, each more powerful and ancient than the Elder Gods. It is they who conspire against us. Myself, my family. We are pawns in their game. Why? I do not know. But I will find out. And then, I will have vengeance.
~ Scorpion in his Mortal Kombat 11 ending.

NOTE: Due to there being two Scorpions in this game we will be referring to present scorpion as Hanzo (as he rejected his title) and past Scorpion as Scorpion.

Due to Kronika's timequake, past Scorpion gets brought into the present. Hoping Kronika can resurrect his family, Scorpion sides with her. He first confronts Liu Kang and Kung Lao within the Dragon Grotto under Wu Shi Academy, which ends up activating the Grotto's traps. Scorpion is defeated with Kung Lao finding out that stopping the traps is impossible. Scorpion disappears to escape the poison gas, and later returns alongside the past version of Jade to fight them. He is later defeated again and knowing he has lost, Scorpion escapes.

Meanwhile, a time-displaced Sektor and Cyrax start kidnapping the new Lin Kuei clansmen into a cybernetic army. Hanzo is alerted to the cybernetic army's return, and he immediately heads over there to assist Sub-Zero in stopping the army before they will attack the new Shirai-Ryu, as Sektor did in the past. He and Sub-Zero eventually infiltrate the cave, defeat Frost and Noob Saibot, free Cyrax from the enslavement protocol, and kill Sektor.

Due to the destruction of many of Earthrealm's bases, Hanzo welcomes his surviving allies to the Shirai-Ryu Fire Garden as the only base left. Hanzo and the other heroes learn about the Elder God's demise and that Kronika is Shinnok's and Cetrion's mom. Hanzo realizes Kronika is indirectly responsible for his family's death due to being Shinnok's mother and Quan Chi working for Shinnok, and so, Scorpion decides to join in the fight against Kronika. He and Sub-Zero go to Kharon's house while scouting Kronika's remaining army, led by Cetrion in the Netherrealm. Hanzo then tells Sub-Zero to return to Earthrealm while the former plans to convince Kharon to join forces against Kronika.

Scorpion also arrives after Hanzo defeats D'Vorah, who was torturing Kharon for refusing to assist Kronika. Scorpion still believes Kronika can revive his clan to their former glory, viewing the present Hanzo's Shirai Ryu as tainted and imperfect. So the two Scorpions fight, Hanzo ends up winning, but doesn't kill his past self knowing he is only doing what he is to restore their wife and son. So in order to convince his past self, Hanzo tells Scorpion that Kronika is planning to resurrect Shinnok, the man responsible for their family's death. But due to being distracted, Hanzo is ambushed by D'Vorah, who poisons him with her venomous pincers, Scorpion, convinced by Hanzo's words, slices off her pincers and forces her to retreat. Hanzo tells his past self that the Shirai Ryu are defined by their heart, not blood, before dying in Scorpion's arms.

Scorpion realizes his present self is right to join the Earthrealm heroes against Kronika, but unfortunately, he ends up being erased when Kronika reverts time back to the beginning.
