Scorpius is the secondary antagonist of the SEGA Mega Drive video game Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball. He is the first boss in the game and the guardian of Toxic Caves. Aside from Robotnik and possibly the Roboheads, he is presumably the only sentient boss in the game.

He is a monstrous, scorpion-like robot with the face of his creator Dr. Ivo Robotnik. He has the ability to spew acid drops from his tail, which push Sonic back. He is encountered in his lair at the end of the Toxic Caves level, after all of the emeralds have been collected.

Appearance

Scorpius has a strange, grotesque appearance. He has the face of Dr. Robotnik, but his body is extremely scorpion-like, hence his name. He has a red torso, several white appendages resembling pinball flippers with red joints, and a long segmented tail with red joints near the end. He has green acid leaking from his eyeballs and sports a permanent wide grin. His jaw is able to extend to unusually large amounts when in pain. Much like his creator, he has black sclera and white pupils, and a large brown mustache.

Biography

Scorpius was encountered by Sonic in Toxic Caves. Scorpius attempted to stop Sonic from getting past him, by sitting idly while spewing acid drops from his tail. After enough hits, his tail was destroyed by Sonic, leaving him completely defenseless against the speed and momentum of the blue hedgehog.

After enough hits, he was finally defeated, leaving him being ripped apart into pieces in a gruesome manner. Sonic proceeded to Lava Powerhouse, the next section of the Veg-O Fortress.

Other Media

Archie Comics

In the sixth issue of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog series, Scorpius was one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Rexxon) of the loose adaptation of Sonic Spinball. Sonic was brought to Scorpius by Rexxon, who served as Scorpius' assistant. He was the boss of the place, but was quickly defeated by Sonic along with Rexxon.

After the Super Genesis Wave, Scorpius was a robot used in a training simulator by the Freedom Fighters.

Trivia

  • Scorpius's appearance is notorious for frightening many people who played the game.
  • Due to being the only actual robot in the game, he is the only real antagonist aside from Robotnik himself.
  • Most players did not ever get to or past Scorpius, due to the game's harsh difficulty.
  • It is possible that he is being remote-controlled by Robotnik from somewhere rather than being an actual robot.
  • In the Sega GameGear and Master System versions of Sonic Spinball, Scorpius is replaced by a different boss.
  • Much like every other boss in the game, He does not ever move, and remains stationary for his entire boss fight.
  • In an early sketch of the box art cover of the game, a drastically different design for Scorpius can be seen. This design more closely resembles the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog design for Robotnik rather than the original western design, which was used as the base in the final version.
  • In the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog episode "Attack on Pinball Fortress", which is a loose adaptation of Sonic Spinball, a giant scorpion robot known as Boss Scorpion is fought near the end of the episode. While clearly a homage to Scorpius, this robot does not resemble Scorpius at all.
