The Scrapped Watchman is a minor antagonist in the 2023 video game Lies of P. It was an advanced puppet designed for the Grand Exhibition in Krat, but the outbreak of the Puppet Frenzy at its big reveal lead it to slaughter its audience, before becoming a devout follower of the Puppet King.
Biography[]
Mascot of Krat City Hall[]
The Watchman was originally created by Lorenzini Venigni, wanting to make a puppet that could both act as powerful member of law enforcement but also could act as a mascot for Krat City Hall who could be a trustworthy friend for the citizens, an experimental piece modified to the extreme to test how far Krat's engineering skills could go. However, the project was unsuccessful, resulting in the overcharged storage battery swelling to a great size and causing the machine to undergo a series of chain explosions and malfunctions, making its body bend and contort. The City Council requested Venigni dispose of it on the grounds that its appearance intimidated visitors, but Venigni and the taxpayers were against the idea, even going so far as to take the matter to court.
While unable to act as a protector, the Watchman found a unique calling as a friend. Despite its intimidating appearance, it became extremely popular with children during the Spring, especially those from the slums, who named the puppet "Murphy," restoring the laughter of those who had their innocence robbed from them to survive. It embraced its role as a friend to the children, actively responding to their playing. As they blew an old whistle during their games, it finally found itself fulfilling its role as a police officer, if only for a brief, imaginary moment. It grew to love the children, remembering all their names, like , and they loved it back, decorating its body with drawings, lights and bunting. They even created a Small Wooden Officer Puppet in its likeness during the Summer and presented it to it during Autumn. The Watchman never let go of the puppet. However, the number of slum children hanging around Murphy began to cause inconvenience to people visiting City Hall, prompting the Council to consider exhibiting the puppet only occasionally as a means to restrict entry.
As the Petrification Disease began to spread throughout Krat, partially helped by the Alchemists, many of Murphy's friends began to succumb to it. The slums were affected particularly badly, in large part thank to Simon Manus spreading a "cure" to those who lived there which only made the condition worse. Children like Toma gradually stopped showing up to play with Murphy as they fell victim to the disease, while those who remained healthy were forced to turn back as the Council feared the potential spread of the illness.
Puppet Frenzy[]
The Watchman grew angry believe the adults responsible for the fate of its friends, having learnt of their deaths. He sought to take up its planned role to deal out justice to those on the council. However, a combination of its poor design and it being bound to the Grand Covenant made it unable to turn against them. However, when Giuseppe Geppetto instigated Puppet Frenzy to cause as much death as possible, the Scrapped Watchman was finally free to exact revenge upon the adults, finding them all guilty of abandoning the children.
The vengeful puppet never forgot the children, acting as the guardian of City Hall until the arrival of P. As they fought, the Watchman mourned its lost friends and saw P as among those responsible for their early deaths. As they fought, it began to produce large amounts of electricity from its core, clearly in pain as the unstable generator grew too much for it. P eventually overpowered it destroying the puppet and, given its Ergo had clearly awoken, perhaps allowing it to see its friends once more.
Legacy[]
After the defeat of Archbishop Andreus, its Ergo was absorbed by Simon Manus.
As Krat's structural integrity failed, the Watchman's broken body fell down into the Barren Swamp Nest, the home of the Green Monster Of The Swamp. When P discovered and fought the creature, it soon found itself unable to compete with the puppet. In terror, it hid inside the Watchman's body, using it as a suit to amplify its abilities. This proved insufficient, and both the creature and the Watchman's remains were destryoed.
