Scylla, also dubbed Titanus Scylla, is a minor character in the 2019 MonsterVerse film Godzilla: King of the Monsters and a minor antagonist in its 2024 sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. She is a giant armored cephalopod kaiju who appears as a Titan that obeys Ghidorah and later Godzilla.
Appearance[]
Scylla is a gigantic aquatic creature with a squid-like body and six incredibly long spider-like legs which she uses to walk. Scylla's torso possesses a noticeable ridge and a raised spine, with a large curved extension above her head, in a similar manner to the shell of a Chambered nautilus. She possesses a rounded head with two eyes, and several tentacles which hang down from her mouth area, similar to Cthulhu.
In Godzilla Dominion, Scylla's design was slightly altered, having a higher amount of thinner and longer tentacles. Her shell was also changed, being more curved with less resemblance to a nautilus shell, and inconsistently depicted as larger in some panels.
In Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted, Scylla's eyes are larger than before and bright red, and her shell is much spinier. Her body is now much more orange while bearing white striped markings on her legs, face, and shell, reminiscent of the patterns seen on Chambered nautilus.
Personality[]
True to Monarch's classification of her as a "Destroyer" (a distinction she shared with Rodan and King Ghidorah), Scylla was a scavenger Titan who didn't take the well-being of those who unfortunate to be in her path, let alone property damage and destruction, into account as she actively sought out sources of radiation on which to feed. Not only it saw her willingly participated in King Ghidorah's destructive campaign against entire Earth, but also placed her into conflict with the United States Coast Guard and even Godzilla, even though she had earlier submitted to him.
When Raymond Martin created a meltdown decoy at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in India, to lure her out, Scylla continued her feeding spree across the world, all while ignoring Godzilla's warnings and possible negative outcomes of her actions. As expected, her final rampage became the last straw for King of the Monsters to use lethal force so she won't cause further damage.
Biography[]
Godzilla: King of the Monsters[]
Scylla was awakened from her slumber in Arizona by King Ghidorah's call, which also awakened many other Titans around the world. Scylla's legs tore through the desert near an oilfield as she erupted from underground. Like the other Titans, Scylla rampaged through populated areas, destroying buildings in nearby Phoenix with her colossal legs. Eventually, she made her way to Boston along with Methuselah, Behemoth, and the Queen MUTO. There, they found the alpha they were following, Ghidorah, slain at the hands of Godzilla. Rodan approached Godzilla to challenge him but was intimidated by his gaze and ultimately submitted. The other Titans all followed suit, each bowing in their own way to the new King of the Monsters. News reports mention Scylla as cooling the Arctic and subsequently stabilizing the global sea levels, while Monarch has recognized her Greek origins.
Godzilla Dominion and Godzilla vs. Kong[]
As show in the prequel comic, driven by hunger, Scylla decides to attempt to feed on a lost nuclear warhead off the coasts of Savannah, Georgia, before Godzilla arrives to stop her. After a brief battle, Scylla is defeated and retreats to an island near the tip of South America before hibernating in its freezing lake. She, along with the other Titans, are sent back into dormancy by Godzilla. She remains dormant as her alpha instructed throughout the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, leading Monarch to label her status as "Defeated" due to unaware with the reason of her inactivity.
Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted[]
After being drawn to the meltdown decoy ordered by Raymond Martin at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in India, Scylla made landfall and engaged local military aircraft, dispatching them with her legs and tentacles. After dealing with them, she smashed the structure with her legs and used her Energy Absorption Technique to absorb and feed on the energy dispersed. She returned to the sea and went on a feeding spree across the world, attacking United Kingdom Nuclear Labs, an American nuclear missile base in Italy, and finally arriving in Rome with Godzilla in hot pursuit. As Scylla smashed her way through the city, Godzilla arrived from shore. The Titans stared each other down before Godzilla roared a challenge at the cephalopod monster and they both charged forward.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire[]
Scylla faces off against Godzilla in Rome. After a brief fight, Godzilla throws her into a building and pins her down. She attempts to suffocate Godzilla with her tentacles while stabbing at him with her legs. Ultimately, Godzilla finishes her with a point-blank blast of his Atomic Breath, blowing her into pieces.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Titan Physiology: As a Titan, Scylla is incredibly powerful as she possesses various physical and supernatural attributes that surpasses that of most other Titans.
- Immense Strength: Scylla possesses large amounts of immense physical strength, partly because of her vast size as she is strong enough to tear through solid rock and buildings. Though ultimately defeated by Godzilla while fighting him over a nuclear bomb, she was even briefly able to hold her own against the Titan.
- Immense Durability: Scylla's advanced bodily tissues provide her much greater resistance to physical injury as she is durable enough to topple buildings and withstand conventional weaponry with little to no damage.
- Immense Stamina: Scylla's musculature is considerably more efficient. Her virtually inexhaustible stamina enables her to exert herself at peak capacity for an undefined period of time without tiring at all, never needing to stop during her battle with Godzilla over a nuclear warhead. Even when she makes her way all the way to Boston, Scylla does not even seem to have any obvious signs of fatigue until she reaches her destination to challenge Godzilla.
- Amphibious Nature: Scylla's internal biology greatly resembles that of a cephalopod and a crustacean as she is adapted for movement both on land and underwater, although she is certainly more than capable of breathing on land. She is also able to propel herself quickly through the water with her legs. Her top speed underwater is unknown, but she is even faster than Godzilla.
- Bacteria Generation: After feeding on a slain Titan, Scylla is capable of converting its nutrients into a deadly water-borne bacteria.
- Liquid Nitrogen Emission: Scylla can emit massive quantities of liquid nitrogen from her body, which enables her to slow down the melting of ice in Antarctica, stabilizing the global sea levels in the process.
- Energy Absorption Technique: First revealed in Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, Scylla released a toxic fog that hindered the Flash's super-speed, though it appears to not have affected the various supervillains breaking out of Iron Heights Prison. Supergirl was able to dispel it with her super-breath. In Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted, it is revealed that after Scylla expels the fog-like pollutant from her mouth area, she uses it gather nuclear energy so that it may be sucked back up and absorbed into her.
Abilities[]
- Skilled Combatant: Scylla can use her legs and tentacles in combat against other Titans such as Godzilla.
- Armored Shell: Similar to a crustacean, Scylla has an extremely thick, armored shell that enables her to withstand conventional weaponry. She can exit her shell at will, presumably to escape another Titan's grasp. Though she is vulnerable to attack until she can grow a new shell, she will compensate by burrowing into a rock face or molding sunken warships into temporary armor.
- Sharp Legs: Scylla's legs are razor-sharp and can be used as formidable weapons. She can use her massive legs to effortlessly smash through buildings and can even use them to penetrate Godzilla's skin with ease.
- Tentacles: Similar to a cephalopod, Scylla has several tentacles which hang down from her mouth area. She can launch her tentacles at an enemy as this was sufficient to disorient Godzilla and send him stumbling backward. Scylla is also capable of using her tentacles to wrap around and grasp opponents in combat, possibly to constrict them.
Relationships[]
Godzilla[]
Godzilla and Scylla seem to have a respectful relationship, at least until the latter turned against him. In 2019, Scylla does not attack Godzilla, but instead bows to him to show how she respects and acknowledge him as the rightful alpha Titan. She would later cause conflict with the King of the Monsters when she began destroying and feeding off of sources of nuclear energy around the world, with Bernie Hayes theorizing that she could have been attempting to enhance herself in order to challenge Godzilla for alpha status.
