I seen ye sparrin' with a gull. Best leave him be. Bad luck to kill a sea bird.
~ Thomas Wake to Ephraim Winslow.

The Seagull is the secondary antagonist of the 2019 psychological horror film The Lighthouse. It is a one-eyed bird that repeatedly harasses Ephraim Winslow during his day-to-day activities.

Biography[]

Ephraim Winslow and Thomas Wake, a pair of wickies, arrive at at a lighthouse, where they will stay for five weeks. In the earlier weeks, Winslow is repeatedly interrupted by an annoying one-eyed seagull, that attacks him and keeps him from getting his work done. Wake warns Winslow that it’s bad luck to kill a gull, due to his superstitious belief that they contain the souls of dead sailors.

One day, Winslow goes to check on the water pump, due to their water suddenly looking dark and bloody. There, he finds a dead gull inside, and then looks up, only to see the one-eyed seagull staring at him. Winslow grabs the gull and beats it to death against the side of the pump.

The next day, the boat that was supposed to pick up Winslow and Wake fails to show, implying that the seagull's death might have cursed them. Later on, Winslow goes fishing, and finds the head of Wake's former partner, which is missing an eye, implying that the seagull might have contained his soul.
