“ If you subscribe to conventional thought you would probably think of Shiki as evil. In order to live they kill people. That makes them monsters, surely. Still, can't you see how such thinking is a bit hypocritical? After all, humans kill humans as well. My father was a perfect example of that. He was a hunter whose main prey was people. He killed to reinforce his sense of superiority. He destroyed lives. My father made me feel weak and impotent. I've always wanted the power he had. Such power... to control who lives and who dies. „
~ Seishirou explaining his philosophy.

Seishirou Kirishiki is a major antagonist in the Shiki franchise.

Outwardly, he is seemingly the patriarch in charge of the Kirishiki Family. However, he is secretly their human subordinate who plays up the facade of being their leader to obscure the true master of the Kirishiki household: his "daughter" Sunako.

He was voiced by Gackt in the Japanese version of the anime, who also portrayed Genesis in the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and by J. Michael Tatum in the English version.

Biography[]

Seishirou was born into a wealthy family of killers. He detested them, and ultimately sided with the Shiki who killed them. When the rest of his family did not rise from the dead, he realized that he was not capable of becoming a Shiki himself, so instead chose to serve them loyally.

Eventually his family moved to Sotoba, where he played up the role of being the leader of his household. Eventually a mob of angry villagers began to suspect that his family were Okiagari, legendary undead creatures from local myths. Seishirou managed to dissuade them by showing them all his pulse.

Seishirou would continue to manipulate the villagers, even convincing Natsuno Koide's father that the supernatural occurrences his son spoke of were mere hysteria. Despite his best attempts to blend in, eventually Toshio Ozaki would learn too much, forcing him to shoot the stake from his hands from afar right before he killed his wife Chizuru.

However, Ozaki would eventually succeed in killing his wife, and tricking her into exposing her true nature in front of the entire village, turning them against his family. Overcome with the desire for vengeance, he attempted to assassinate Ozaki, but shot Sadaichi Tamo instead, who was standing in his way at the time. After this Natsuno Koide arrived, and using his Jinrou powers subdued and bit Seishirou, hypnotizing him into hunting down other Jinrou and killing them on sight.

Seishirou would locate one of his Jinrou servants known as Yoshie Kurahashi and shoot her on sight. This would kill her in the anime adaption, while she would survive it in the manga. His fate also differs in both versions. In the manga he shoots himself to prevent himself from hurting his family any further, while he walks into the burning wreckage of his manor at the end of the anime.

Trivia[]

  • Seishirou is meant to invoke the classic trope of the charismatic vampire aristocrat like Count Dracula, so the reveal that he's actually human is a shocking twist. His actual role in the Kirishiki family is closer to Renfield.
