Draseal... The town where a dragon is sealed. You should've noticed it in the town's name, White Wizard-san. Your role ends here. Now then... since Aldo-chan is back... What will happen next? That's right... It should distort more. All so the perfect circle of the moon will stand out. Make this world ugly and distorted. As long as the moonlight still shines...
~ Selene's introduction.

Selene, also known as the Moon Dragon God, is the secondary antagonist of the manga/anime series Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, the spin-off sequel to the original manga/anime series Fairy Tail.

She is one of the Five Dragon Gods that originally resided in Guiltina, before eventually traveling through dimensions and residing Elentear. She is also the leader of the Moonlight Divinities, a group of female underlings that specialize in Spiritual Arts and Magic.

As a result of residing in Elentear, she has been threatening and manipulating one of its residers, Faris, to invade Earth Land and destroy the other Dragon Gods for her so that they won't come after her. Otherwise, she plans to use Elentear as her base, letting its power overflow in the hopes she can harness it and any other powerful magic she finds to kill her enemies; the other members of the Five Dragon Gods.

She was voiced by Nana Mizuki in Japanese and Natalie Van Sistine in English.

Appearance[]

As a human, Selene appears to be a curvaceous woman with blonde hair. Her main attire appears to be a kimono with fur coating and a hood laid on top of her head. The hood appears to have a crescent moon symbol of sorts with wings sticking out on both sides. Her kimono seems to have flower patterns on the side and zigzagged lines on the edges.

In her dragon form, Selene appears to be a four-legged dragon with fur around her neck down to her body and dark-colored tips on her horns. She also appears to have black fur on each of her legs. Instead of wings, she seems to have six individual fox tails on her back, each possessing the same dark-colored tips as her horns.

Personality[]

Selene initially comes off as a sadistic and wicked individual that takes delight in people's suffering, among other things. She appears at first to care nothing more than to see endless chaos and destruction as it brings amusement for her. As part of her supposed sadistic nature, she goes out of her way to manipulate Faris into doing her bidding by threatening to take Elentir away from her if she does not do as she is told. Like Aldoron and Ignia, she thinks highly of herself above all others. However, this malevolent nature is later revealed to be a result of desperation and extreme measures to stop the other members of the Five Dragon Gods, showing that she is not so much evil as deceitful and extreme as a result of trying to stop her enemies no matter the cost She also seems to have somewhat of an indecent nature to her as she doesn't mind bathing herself in front of Natsu and Gray while they were held captive. Selene had no regrets about her destruction of many parallel worlds or the killing of humans that tried to in turn kill her, but this was only because she did what was necessary to survive.

Unlike Aldoron and Ignia, however, she is able to accept the limitation of her own strength. While she believes she could kill one of them, she might die in the process, which is something she does not want to risk. She also acknowledged Natsu to be someone worthy of her time because of his status as Ignia's brother. Also, she admired and praised Suzaku's strength and decided not to kill him for eating her son's corpse. Selene also believes the days of dragons are over, and instead desires to live in her human form and reign supreme as the strongest wizard in the world. To further this goal, Selene decided to take over the wizard guild Diabolos after killing its master and becoming its new guild master. She is later revealed to actually like humans, and despite hating their constant warring, arrogance, and inability to take full advantage of their short lives, she admires their ability to thrive, love, and move forward together; something she finds that dragons and humans have in common. It is likewise revealed that she prefers to live as a human in addition.

In spite of her wickedness, Selene was capable of showing love, at least to a few other people, such as her dead son, the Sword Saint Dragon, Kurnugi. She willingly let herself be subdued in battle by the Dragon Slayer Suzaku as a means of getting close to the guild master of Diabolos; Kurnugi's murderer, Georg Raizen, whom she quickly and brutally crushed in vengeance. Selene also has revealed that she enjoys celebrations and parties, desiring to party every night under the light of the moon with a drink in her hand. Selene also seems to have a sense of humor, jokingly telling Suzaku that Irene (invisible to the former) is naked.

Biography[]

Selene was born at least 400 years before the events of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. In that time, she had at least three sons, one of whom was Kurnugi, the Sword Saint Dragon. Some time after giving birth to her children, she and the other Dragon Gods fled from Ishgar when Acnologia began his genocide of dragons during the Dragon King Festival. In the years after, Elefseria, the founder of the first wizard guild and a Dragon Slayer-turned Dragon, tried to defeat her, but was unable to do so because of her vast power.

Selene was mentioned by Mercphobia after Team Natsu defeated him and sealed away his power. Mercphobia knew very little about her as he never met her personally when warning the team about her.

Selene was responsible for causing the overflow of magic power in the alternate world of Elentear, where she made her base on Black Moon Mountain. She commissioned and strong-armed White Wizard Faris into doing her bidding to erase the magic of Earthland and help her destroy the other Dragon Gods. To that end, Faris took control of Mercphobia's magic and then tried to control Aldoron to fight the other Dragon Gods, though Faris was eventually defeated and redeemed when it was revealed that Selene had manipulated her. Mystogan, king of Edolas, would reveal Selene was able to cross dimensions and that she was the reason Edolas' people never harvested magic from Elentear. Selene herself would appear after Faris told Team Natsu about her, wounding Faris and briefly battling Natsu before transporting everyone to Elentear. There, she let her three servants, Mimi, Yoko, and Hakune, the three Moonlight Divinities battle and defeat them before transforming the female members of the group (Lucy, Erza, Wendy, and Carla) as well as Happy, into monsters before letting Natsu Dragneel and Gray Fullbuster, battle them at the bottom of Black Moon Mountain.

During this battle, Selene was confronted by the Dragon Slayer wizard Suzaku of Diabolos, who challenged her to duel after defeating Natsu and Erza in short order. Suzaku and Selene's battle proved so fearsome that Mercphobia could even sense it between dimensions. During the battle, Selene recognized Suzan's magic was that of her son, the Sword-Saint Dragon, Kurnugi, whose flesh Suzaku had eaten after Kurnugi had been killed by Georg Reizen, the Guild Master of Diabolos. The Dragon Slayer eventually gained the upper hand, severely wounding Selene and causing her to try and escape through a dimensional portal back to Earthland. Suzaku promptly caught her before presenting the now-chained Selene to Georg, who was surprised and delighted to learn that one of the dragons he had slain had been her son. Attempting to attack her after she transformed, Georg Reizen was promptly crushed beneath Selene's foot, and the other members of Diabolos could only stare in shock due to how strong and fast she had revealed herself to be. Selene then offered Diabolos' members a choice; fight her and die, or let her lead them as Diabolos' new Guild Master. Realizing the folly of fighting her, Diabolos' members quickly submitted to her leadership.

With her dominance established, Selene ordered her new guild to enter the Great Labyrinth of Dogra, where the bones of her fellow Dragon God, Dogramag, lay entombed in order to claim a weapon that would help to defeat the other remaining Dragon Gods, Ignia and Viernes. This weapon, the heart of Elefseria, contained all the knowledge of magical weapons needed to potentially kill the Dragon Gods. Upon her arrival, Selene's forces entered the labyrinth, while she waited at the entrance for Elefseria and Team Natsu. She then challenged them to a "game"; if their guild could beat hers and bring her the heart, then she would release Elefseria, whom she took captive. Reluctantly agreeing to her terms, the group entered the magical labyrinth and did battle with her forces, eventually defeating most of them. However, when Ignia appeared, Selene was left with no choice but to enter the labyrinth herself and stop him.

Using her dimensional transmission abilities, Selene tried to ambush Ignia when he found Elefseria's heart, but the Fire Dragon God was quick to counter her. Ignia deduced that Selene had sided with humans and Selene in return stated the age of dragons was over. Ignia, not wanting Selene to use the heart's store of knowledge to try and destroy him and Gold Dragon God Viernes, then burned the heart to ash, much to Selene's shock and dismay. Both dragons then transformed from their human states into their dragon forms, whereupon they prepared to do battle at last.

Ignia and Selene quickly began to trade blows, damaging the labyrinth further, and employing every trick at their disposal. Selene initially thought she had the upper hand, but even with her magic to help her, Selene was heavily damaged by Ignia's flames, while Ignia was himself showing little in the way of exhaustion or injury. The fight caused Natsu, Suzaku, and Natsu's exceed friend Happy to stare in shock and amazement when they stumbled onto the battle. However, for Natsu, the fight caused flashbacks of his father's death and Natsu screamed for the two dragons to stop fighting. Selene was appalled at why he wanted the fight to stop, especially since the death of one of them would end up giving Natsu and his friends one less enemy to fight, but Ignia knew that Natsu did not want to see a repeat of Igneel's death. However, Ignia told Natsu that he was different from their father, and stronger than Acnologia, before sending a full-powered Fire Dragon Roar through Selene's neck, causing her to spew blood from her mouth in agony. Shocked and horrified by the underhanded blow his brother had delivered, Natsu shouted Ignia's name in rage as his companions looked on in terror.

Mortally wounded, Selene fell to the ground and was forced to watch as Ignia awakened Dogramag from his slumber, horrified as the Earth Dragon God emerged to devour the humans in the labyrinth and duel with Natsu as Ignia left to complete his plans. While Natsu and Suzaku dueled with Dogramag, a greatly weakened Selene transformed back to her human form, partially healing herself, and used her spatial magic to gather all members of Fairy Tail together. She pleaded for their help to eliminate all the 72 orbs that maintained Dogramag's power throughout the labyrinth so that Natsu and Suzaku had a better chance of defeating the Earth Dragon God. Though initially apprehensive, for the sake of the greater good, the members of Fairy Tail agreed to help her in order to defeat the greater threat at hand.

As Selene opened portals to guide Fairy Tail's members to the Dogra Cores, she began to feel the effects of her wounds, as she was nearly out of magic. However, when Gray asked her if she was alright, Selene replied she had enough strength to help stop Dogramag. When he asked her why she was helping them, Selene told Gray that her goal was to see humanity live safely without the fear of dragons and that she preferred to live as a human. Replying that she did not expect him to believe her due to her past antagonistic methods and that she was thankful for showing her that their help was what she required to stop the other Dragon Gods, she sent him willingly to the location of the next Dogra Core, while she mused that only 62 cores remained as a result of Fairy Tail's might.

As Fairy Tail destroyed the other Dogra cores, Selene's strength began to wane from how much of her remaining power she used to transport her allies to the location of each core. Seeing this, Wendy began using her healing magic on Selene, but it proved of little value due to how much power she had used up. As Kiria came to their aid to help Selene finish the mission, Fairy Tail finally destroyed the Dogra Cores, allowing Natsu and Suzaku to gain the upper hand in the fight against Dogramag.

When Dogramag is finally killed, Selene is escorted to safety by Fairy Tail and Diabolos, where she rests and recovers at the Diabolos guild hall.

Later, she invites the members of Fairy Tail, Diabolos, and Elefseria to listen to her words while they relax in the bathhouse, casting a spell so that both the men and women in the separate areas can hear and speak with one another (resulting in Natsu hilariously inadvertently entering the girl's bath house via this magic portal). Selene states she has no regrets about the devastation she's caused as a result of her search for the necessary magic to destroy the Five Dragon Gods, and that she had no qualms about killing humans that tried to kill her, but beyond that, she also reveals that she in truth enjoys humans as a whole, stating that despite their arrogance, constant warring and seeming inability to live their lives to the fullest, she admires their ability to stand together, move forward, thrive, and love one another, something she says dragons also share. She likewise states that Ignia and Viernes must be destroyed, as they have no desire to understand or coexist with humanity and thus remain a threat. Selene then reveals she is also dying; the wounds inflicted on a dragon by another dragon will never heal, and she will eventually perish from the wound Ignia inflicted on her. Later, after concluding her talk with her guild and Fairy Tail, Selene speaks with Suzaku, informing him that she has made peace with the death of her son Kurnugi and that she is glad that Suzaku now holds his power. Selene also states she has one more thing to do before she dies and turns to face the spirit of Irene Belserion, whom she has been aware of the entire time.

Engaging Irene in conversation, Selene learns that Irene has come to give her a second chance at life. After Suzaku leaves (courtesy of Selene joking that Irene, invisible to Suzaku, is naked, embarrassing the Black Dragon Knight) Irene explains that she and Selene can help one another. Irene then explains her origins and backstory as the creator of Dragon Slayer Magic, and that Fairy Tail will need Selene to help stop the remaining members of the Five Dragon Gods. As Selene truly cares about humanity, Irene heals Selene's wound and turns her permanently into a human, causing the cursed injury inflicted by Ignia to be enchanted by her own exchange. Knowing this will also harm Wendy, to whom Irene is connected, Irene asks Selene to kill her, as it will save Wendy's life. Selene then uses her Aqua Aera magic to open a portal to another world; Edolas, where she can be reincarnated again, this time with no risk to anyone else, as Irene knows her magic is too powerful to remain in Earth-Land. Selene, smiling, watches as Irene departs and dies peacefully, knowing that she still can play a role in protecting humanity and is given a new chance at life; one in which she can help bring an end to the danger of dragons once and for all.

The morning after, Selene sits down and talks with Elefseria, with both apologizing to one another for their shared misunderstanding, and agreeing to work together to stop Viernes and Ignia. Selene then asks Elefseria about the dragon-killing weapon known as "Athena", and its location, but Elefseria does not know, as his late apprentice made the weapon. In order to kill Viernes and Ignia, Selene knows Athena must be located, and suggests that Viernes must become their next target, as his attitude towards humans makes him a threat to humanity, as does his symbolism, saying he is a dragon that both "does and does not exist" (as it is later revealed Viernes technically has no body, and his spirit is kept alive through alchemy, as it is bound to the alchemist guild Gold Owl's guild hall).

Selene and Diabolos then agree to work in cooperation with Fairy Tail and Elefseria to find Athena, Viernes, and Ignia, vowing to alert one another if they should find them.

Powers and Abilities[]

Moon Dragon Slayer Magic: Selene can utilize elemental Dragon Slayer Magic like all the other Five Dragon Gods, the element, in this case, is the stars and the moon. Selene uses this Magic to make her surroundings appear to be at nighttime with her own artificial moon and uses it to create an explosion that transports her targets into a different world, as well as offensive purposes such as pinpoint laser beam attacks.

  • Relocation: Selene creates a large orb of galactic matter that sucks in and transports all that are caught in it to a chosen area.
  • Moonlight Conflagration: Selene creates a large spiral of off-colored flames around her target and burning them.
  • Moonlight Butterflies: Selene creates light-colored paper-like butterflies that causes major damage to those that become ensnared by it.
  • Moonlight Blade: Selene swipes her arm sideways as she fires numerous crescent blades made of moonlight at her target. The speed of these blades is significantly high, leaving Suzaku unable to react in time to properly block, let alone avoid the blades.
  • Moonlight Palm: With Selene's arm being raised forward, her palm facing the target, a blast of moonlight is launched toward said target, causing a large, columnar explosion to be created.
  • Transformation Magic: Selene, like the other Five Dragon Gods, is able to change appearances into that of a full-fledged human, though all Dragons possess the ability to transform to a certain extent.
  • Aqua Aera: Selene is shown to be able to use this Magic to travel between dimensions as she is able to travel between Earth Land, Edolas, and Elentear.
  • Telepathy: Selene is able to make use of this form of Magic, allowing her to communicate with the Moonlight Divinities telepathically.
  • Flight: As a Dragon, Selene possesses the ability to fly through the air using her wings.
  • Immense Durability: Selene's durability is strong enough to take on Natsu's attack with just one of her hand.
  • Immense Magic Power: As one of the Five Dragon Gods, Selene possesses an immense amount of Magic Power which is said to be equal to that of Acnologia. Her power is strong enough that it can affect Earth Land by creating storm surges while being in Elentir
