~ Ihsan’s Shade refering to Sengir |
Sengir, more promiently known as Baron Sengir is a vampire lord and the main antagonist of the Homelands set of Magic: the Gathering. Originally from Dominaria, Sengir was sent to the plane of Ulgrotha through forces outside of his control. On both planes, he has created a large family from those he either enslaved or have granted the gift of vampirism. Currently ruling from his castle in Dark Barony on Ulgrotha, Sengir rules a good portion of the plane and has desires to expand his kingdom. Other notable members of the Sengir bloodline include, Irini Sengir, Grandmother Sengir, Veldrane of Sengir, Kazarov, and Verrak.
History[]
Before Ulgrotha[]
Sengir was the offspring of a baron. His most distinguishing features include perfectly white teeth, healthy brown hair, and dark black eyes. Sengir's father dabbled with dark magic and sent plague rats into cities under his control to kill people and experiment on their corpses. His goal was to become immortal through vampirism and wanted to grant his son the same gift, much to Sengir's displeasure. Sengir, realizing the dark actions his father was taking and believing he would make a better ruler, went to a graveyard in one of the villages under his father's control to form a bond with an orphan with magical powers. Sengir taught her the song that his father used to control the rats and intended for her to kill the Baron so he could take his place. Sengir couldn't do it himself because he wouldn't be able to claim his father's kingdom.
The orphan agreed and the two stormed castle Sengir with an army of rats. When they reached the Baron, he and the orphan both attempted to control the rats with their songs. The rats, who were confused on who to follow, decided to attack the only other person in the area, Sengir. After they slit Sengir's throat, the Baron cast a spell targeting his son, but he was already dead. Seeing her opportunity, the orphan used the rats to end the Baron once and for all. The orphan opened a window to let sunlight in, but realized shortly after that Sengir had survived. The spell his father cast was a healing spell which saved his life. Once the sunlight hit his skin, he yelled in pain and slinked into the darkness, signaling that his transformation into a vampire was complete. He complimented the girl about her magic and deduced that she may eventually become a Planeswalker. They both shared their names with the girl being Ravi and Sengir taking his fathers title for his own. The two went their separate ways, but neither would realize they would meet again in the distant future.
Ulgrotha[]
Many centuries later, Baron Sengir was summoned to a Planeswalker duel against his will on Ulgrotha. When the Planeswalker who transported him lost the duel and left the plane, the vampire was stranded with no way to return to Dominaria. This didn't matter to him because he saw a new world to conquer. Throughout the centuries, Sengir became more and more like his father, becoming a dictator. He found refuge with the An-Zerrin people whom he had tried to enslave. Things didn't go as planned and he killed the natives and turned them into the undead. When the dwarves retaliated, he fended them off three times and to send a clear message to them, he kidnapped the king's daughter Irini. Shortly after, she turned her into a vampire and the Baron claimed her as his daughter dubbing her Irini Sengir. With their spirits broken, the dwarves abandoned the castle, went into hiding, and attempted to keep the Planar Portal under the castle a secret.
Unfortunately, Sengir easily found the portal. While he wasn't very magically inclined, he knew the portal was a dangerous device. All of the minions he sent though it never returned. Scouring the underground city and interrogating the dwarven prisoners, the Baron sought to know the secrets of the Planar Portal and where it led, but to no avail. To find that answer, he planned on forming an army to find out. He gathered creatures from across the plane until he found a coffin in a crumbled spire. Inside the coffin was an old, mad, woman. Unbeknownst to the Baron, this old crone was his old friend Ravi. Without a second thought, he indoctrinated her into the Sengir family, now calling her Grandmother Sengir. With her help, Baron Sengir gained access to dark magic and knowledge lost to most beings.
Sengir's next move was to send his bloodline into the city of Aysen. His goal wasn't to conquer it, but to break its inhabitants physically and mentally. During their raid, dozens of humans were kidnapped from Aysen and other nearby towns. They were taken to villages inside his kingdom now called Dark Barony. While the humans served no useful purpose, they gave the Baron entertainment and the dead ones were reanimated to join his forces. He also implemented strict rules, his most notable one was that if one person would attempt to flee, ten more would die as well.
Though Sengir had very little obstacles in his quest for conquest, two major threats to his schemes were the Planeswalkers Serra and her husband Feroz. Instead of going to battle against the couple, he planned to manipulate them into leaving Ulgrotha of their own decision. He set up a meeting with the two in which he told them that Ulgrotha was his new home and that they should not interfere with his machinations. They both rejected Sengir's demands and aided the people under his rule. It became more evident that the Baron was losing his influence when Eron became the new king of the goblins, he failed to manipulate him. The two did make a deal, Eron would give supplies to villages that couldn't provide for themselves and Sengir couldn't cause harm to the Koskun Mountains. To make matters worse, he sensed a threat in the Great Wood and sent his Royal Hunters to find out what it was that could inconvenience him.
Over the years, Sengir and Serra's forces were more openly hostile towards each other. One of her paladins named Ihsan wished to become a vampire in order to have a chance to slay the Baron. Unfortunately for Ihsan, Sengir saw through his deception and turned him into a shade instead and he became his slave. Through the shade, he learned that his imperialistic actions were causing his subjects to unite under their hatred of the Baron. In response, he stopped orchestrating major raids on the towns so that without a common enemy, the citizens would turn on each other and end themselves. He also managed to convince some of them to turn against Serra.
Sengir managed to get a lucky break when Feroz was killed during an experiment which left Serra devastated. After witnessing her fail to save an old man, Baron Sengir scolded her for her interference like Feroz did and she left Ulgrotha filled with guilt. When Serra died, he planted a tree on Feroz's grave, uniting the two lovers beyond death. With his biggest problems dead, he was essentially free to continue his schemes uninhibited. His spies intensified the conflict between the forces of Serra and the Death Seekers. Many students in the Wizard's School had willingly offered their loyalty to the Baron. His puppet Veldrane patrolled the forest with the other hunters trying to find the grove of the Autumn Willow. Two thieves named Joven and Chandler were unknowingly selling artifacts to the vampire so that he gains more powerful relics. Even Eron's trade agreement was starting to falter and his servants worked for Sengir.
Baron Sengir's operations were functioning without any qualms. His newest plan was to wait in hiding for the divide between the Aysen to cause an irreversible rift. Then he would kill Eron and bring Koskun Keep into turmoil. With the goblins extremely hungry, they would travel to Aysen for food. While a good portion of the goblins would die during the journey, enough would reach the city to eventually destroy it. In a few years, he would reemerge and offer the weaker lords with an ultimatum. Serve Baron Sengir in life, or perish and serve him in death.
Through the Portal[]
After the Homelands story ended, Baron Sengir's whereabouts remain unknown. That was until the Planeswalker Leshrac arrived before the Great Mending occurred and saw Ihsan's Shade leading his army towards the Planar Portal. Whatever was on the other side was destined to be conquered.
