~ Senior through Mayui Kokuchou to Kamino, preparing to kill her.
When an athlete experiences new speeds while being pulled by a machine, their scores will improve afterwards. By making the unknown into the known, the brain works to catchup with that unknown and Synthesize Grid is a Gemstone ability. There is no better way to experience the world of a Gemstone.
~ Senior to Kamino.

Senior is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Mayui Kokuchou) of the manga A Certain Scientific Mental Out, a spin-off of the A Certain Magical Index franchise.

They are the past 1st-ranked Level 5 esper whose consciousness was torn apart and inhabits two cubes called "Relics". The relic in the hands of Mayui Kokuchou houses Senior's sinister personality which seeks to take revenge on Academy City. They're the archenemy of their good counterpart.

Personality[]

Senior's original personality isn't known as their mind was split in two after the destruction of their original body. As such, there are two different wills inhabiting the two Relics. However, both incarnations have an intellectual demeanor and seemingly have a tendency to include English words in their speech randomly.

Mayui Kokuchou's Relic displays a cold, arrogant and ruthless attitude. The Relic is quite prideful and looks down on the current generation of Level 5 espers as shown when it mocks Mikoto Misaka during their battle. It also claims that a current Level 5 should be stopped by a past one. The Relic is also willing to attack innocent bystanders and shows no qualms with killing those it deems as a threat to its objectives. Moreover, when confronted by its counterpart, Absolute Leaf, Kokuchou's Relic boldy calls it a copy and attempts to destroy it.

The Relic tends to forcibly take over Kokuchou's body and act on her behalf without her permission. They also has a habit of taking things literally, as it corrected Kokuchou when the latter stated that Kamino was a powerless ant. Senior states that anyone who can't appreciate microscopic details isn't worthy of being an esper as the foundation of esper powers are at the quantum level, a sentiment that they share with Kamino. Senior has a strong hatred towards Aleister Crowley and is rather vengeful against him, presumably because of his involvement with the destruction of their original body. They express a desire to bring down the hammer and destruction upon the city's law and its ruler.

Senior claims that their wish is to use their ability to elevate the powers of all espers in Academy City and grant them the qualities of a Gemstone. This would make even the lowest level espers have the same strength of a Level 5. However, while their objectives seem noble on the surface, Kokuchou's Relic is incredibly delusional and dismisses any problems others might have with their plans. In addition to this, the Relic displays a callous disregard for the safety of others as when Kamino states that their plan might result in the deaths of numerous espers throughout the city, Senior coldly replies that they would expect praise instead of criticism for bringing them up to the level of superhumans.

However, while they're usually calm and collected, Senior is able to show signs of excitement or bloodlust during a fight, as seen in their battle with Kamino. They're also have a sadistic side to themselves, as they showed no reservations with brutally mutilating Kamino with their ability. However, Senior has a level of respect for those who manage to impress them. Furthermore, Senior is also very prudish and deeply hates perverts, mostly due to their encounter with Aleister and catching a glimpse of his perverted nature. When Kamino stated her desire to take Kuroko Shirai home with her and lick all over her body, Senior was utterly disgusted and claimed that they refused to associate with any deviants, excluding the city's ruler.

Biography[]

Much of Senior's background isn't known. What is known is that they were a Gemstone esper who came from outside of Academy City and rose to #1, with research on them greatly contributing to esper development and forming the foundation for the current generation. Moreover, they were apparently active during a time with dial-up Internet access, CRT monitors with slow moving images and 8-bit computing, meaning that they have been around since the beginning of Academy City's foundation.

At some point in time, the former #1 Level 5 was presumably killed by Aleister Crowley and Noukan Kihara for unknown reasons. However, their mind managed to survive (though torn in half and missing memories) and wandered the skies of Academy City in a disembodied state, devouring the supernatural as they did so. After the events of the Daihaisei Festival, Senior managed to revive themselves and return to the physical world through the creation of Shadow Metal, fashioning their current vessel with their ability.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Synthesize Grid: The past Level 5's esper ability allows them to control the Starting Crystal at the base of all crystals which uses small metal particles as its core and grows. Synthesize Grid can scatter nanometal particles and bond with everything in the current surroundings, allowing it to manipulate anything within the affected area. Synthesize Grid has incredible bonding properties. The nanometal particles acts as a medium for the user's thoughts and remotely controlled. The influence of the power is, at times, visually represented in the form of a dark miasma.
    • Spatial Manipulation: Synthesize Grid's main function is described as practically taking control of the entire space around the user. It creates a "special" territory by enveloping the area and filling it with nanometal particles. With this, Synthesize Grid is able to cause various phenomena within the territory it controls. It can fill walls with carbon blocks and isolate an entire building from the outside world by creating a spatial barrier. It can also distort space and warp the scenery to the point where they can access the 11th dimension. Mikoto Misaka even caught glimpses of another dimension.
    • Matter Manipulation: Within its area of effect, Synthesize Grid can enter all forms of matter and control them on a molecular level. It can transmute matter into different forms and telekinetically influence objects in ways such as suspending or moving them midair. It can also create new forms of matter that don't follow the normal laws of physics. It can create constructs like spikes formed in mid-air around a target to be launched inwards and skewer them. These constructs can be remotely broken down in order to disperse nanometal back into the air.
    • Cold Manipulation: One prominent effect which heralds Synthesize Grid is a drop in temperature, producing a "chilly" sensation within its territory, to the extent of ice forming. It can instantly turn the classroom into a Mt. Everest-like environment in terms of low air and freezing temperatures and induce hypoxia by directly removing oxygen and hemoglobin from people's blood. It can also manipulate structures formed from the produced ice, such as launching icicles formed from frozen water balls.
    • Air Manipulation: Synthesize Grid is capable of influencing the air in various ways. The nanometal particles are capable of transforming the air and absorbing energy to steal heat, causing things to freeze. By bonding with the air molecules that a non-vacuum explosion will travel through, Synthesize Grid can seize control of the explosion and compress it into a ball of energy that can be relocated somewhere else. It can also sense fluctuations in the air.
    • Power Absorption and Ferrogenesis: Synthesize Grid is capable of consuming esper powers within its area of effect, manifesting a unique substance known as Shadow Metal as a result. Senior used this ability to create the two relics after the clash of esper powers at the Daihasei Festival and revive themselves through it. It also devoured a supersonic explosion from Sakubou's Blaze Sheep. Besides Shadow Metal, the Relic said that it could theoretically create fictional metals like orichalcum or hihiirokane.
    • Disintegration: Through an unknown method, Sythesize Grid is able to use its nanometal particles to create an invisible attack capable of disintegrating matter and easily boring a large hole in multiple large objects. Synthesize Grid is also able to use the alloy known as Mimosa to erase organic materials.

Relic Form[]

  • Power Bestowal: As a Relic, Senior is able to grant anyone who wields the relic a portion of their esper power and can even augment the wielders' exiting abilities to that of a Level 5.
  • Body Possession: The Relics are capable of manipulating those who hold them, apparently putting them under the influence of the former #1, and have the ability to take over they're current hosts and speak through them.
  • Shapeshifting: While normally cubes, the Relics are capable of changing their shape. Kokuchou's Relic can disguise itself as a book, and her bag.

Abilities[]

  • Extraordinary Intellect: As a Level 5 esper, Senior is presumed to have an extremely high level of intellect that should rival even the likes of Accelerator or Mikoto Misaka.

Trivia[]

  • When the Relics communicate, through a person or otherwise, the dialogue box is square shaped.
