~ Sera justifying her actions to Emily, despite that its all ultimately false. |
“ | Heaven needs us, Emily. Everyone looks to us and we can't doubt ourselves or worry about the fates of demons when we have our own souls to protect. Please, if you start to question, you could end up like Lucifer: fallen. I couldn't bear see you suffer that fate. So, please, let me worry about this, okay? I'm sorry. | „ |
~ Sera to Emily after the latter rightfully calls her out for making the unjustified Exterminations. |
Sera is the overarching antagonist of Season 1 of the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel.
She is the head seraphim and guardian of Heaven. She is the one who authorized the yearly Exterminations without Heaven's knowledge, where thousands of Hell's Sinners are slaughtered, even if she doesn't approve of them.
She is voiced by Patina Miller.
Appearance[]
Sera resembles an atypical angel, with long, white hair, blue eyes, three pairs of feathered wings, flowing white robes, and a white halo fused with a crown with light blue gems. She has dark gray skin and seven tear-like markings under each eye. Physically, she is larger than any other known resident of Heaven, standing over 12 feet tall.[1]
In her true form, Sera has six wings, bird-like facial features, sharp, exaggerated eyebrows, and three eyes on her face, the third larger with a vertical pupil. Additional eyes appear on her wings and robe, the latter of which gains a feathered texture. Her halo changes to a bejewled tiara.
Personality[]

~ Sera trying to justify her extremist actions. |
Sera is a kind, albeit secretive being, hellbent on keeping Heaven safe from hellish invaders. She is active in Heaven and is friendly to anyone who enters, though she is one to keep secrets, including the yearly Extermination, which Heaven was unaware of.
Sera admits that she had a hard time in making the decision to allow Adam to kill Sinners as she knows it’s against what Heaven is supposed to stand for; although she doesn’t bother questioning the rules and follows them rather than breaking them, she's even shown to be a coward, as her delusional fear of Hell destroying Heaven will happen despite that it never did, showing how scared she was to fight if it ever did happen.
She is also hypocritical as she lets Adam win over Charlie in court despite Charlie having proof that sinners can redeem in the form of Angel Dust standing up for Niffty against Valentino, while she and the other Seraphim allow an arrogant, heartless and sexist person like Adam in Heaven instead of anyone who actually deserves it.
Despite her negative traits, Sera genuinely cares about Emily and her fellow Angels and is saddened by Emily choosing to be against her due to her actions and calling her out, and the only reason why she agreed to Adam’s plan at all was to protect Heaven and out of a misguided belief that Hell’s Demons would attack and destroy Heaven despite not all of them being the same, although Demons such as the Overlords and other genuinely evil demons make her actions slightly understandable.
But it all still no excuse, as she herself is no better than the truly evil Overlords, as she is killing souls in Hell without justice or getting to know the citizens first, still making herself a cowardly tyrant and murderer to Heaven's blind eye, as her fear of Hell taking over when she's actually making Heaven look like the monsters taking over Hell without giving sinners a chance to see, show, and prove the goodness in themselves and Heaven.
Biography[]
Past[]
Sera's origins are unknown; she is believed to be one of the oldest of Seraphim angels and, much like Lucifer, a divine being who predates the existence of mortals. Long ago, she and the other angels expanded the universe, and on Earth, they created the first humans, Adam and Lilith.
But Lucifer, a fellow Seraphim regarded as a "trickster" by his contemporaries, wanted to implant his own ideas (which he considered brilliant) into Creation. He tempted Eve with the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, granting mankind free will. It backfired horribly and ended up accidentally unleashing evil on Earth. Lucifer was exiled to a dark void that later became Hell.
Some time later, the infernal population began to grow to the point of overpopulation and become very powerful, so much so that Sera feared a rebellion. To protect Heaven, with great pain, Sera allowed an annual Extermination led by Adam.
Welcome to Heaven[]
For countless millennia, Sera orchestrated the annual purges in secrecy, these morally questionable methods unseen by other residents of Heaven. Eventually, however, Lucifer's daughter, Charlie (who had inherited much of her father's idealism), proposed an alternate plan involving redemption and forgiveness.
After Lucifer used his limited influence to arrange a meeting with Sera, her younger contemporary Emily convinced Sera to at least let Charlie plead her case in an angelic court. Sera also allows Adam to speak at this hearing and tells him to do whatever is necessary to stop Charlie from winning. While at the hearing, she and the council observe Angel Dust at the club to see if he could be redeemed. After Angel Dust does everything on Adam’s list, it’s revealed that the council doesn’t know what it takes to get a soul into Heaven.
When Charlie, Emily, Lute, and Adam start singing, Adam accidentally reveals the Extermination to the whole council (to the horror of Emily and many other high-ranking angels) and exposes both his and Sera's hypocrisy and ignorance of any divine law that regulated who was deserving of entrance into Heaven.
Eventually, Sera rejects Charlie's argument (despite Charlie providing evidence via Adam's own standards), though Emily promises to continue the debate as much as she can on Charlie's side.
The Show Must Go On[]
She makes a cameo along with Emily, being shocked upon Sir Pentious entering heaven in front of them both, ultimately proving that Charlie's plan will work, but while Emily is delighted, Sera is horrified, most likely realizing her hand in allowing centuries of meaningless slaughter.

Trivia[]
- Sera is a Seraphim, which, in Christian mythology, is an extremely powerful and authoritative angel, even higher than an Archangel.
- Her name, Sera, may be the diminutive of Seraphiel, a seraphim angel who appears in the Book of Enoch and who is said to be the highest-ranking seraphim. Although it is unclear if Sera is Seraphiel or if she shares any relationship with him.
- During the scene where she tries to explain what she's doing to Emily, her eyes have a fiery glow in them, symbolizing her evil and that Emily no longer believes her, seeing her as a monster just like Adam and Lute, but Sera is not actually pure evil, regardless because of her reluctance in allowing genocide and her misguided fears and irrational paranoia.
- Ironically, her allowing the Exterminations ultimately proved pointless, as Sir Pentious ascended to Heaven, proving Charlie and Emily's point.
- It's currently unknown if Sera stopped the Exterminations after Adam's death, although judging from Lute taking his place and visiting Lilith, it seems that Sera still approves of them or that she lost control over the Exorcists entirely.
- Seeing as the Seven Deadly Sins are the rulers of Hell in this setting, and given Sera's role as a judge, she may be intended to represent Justice as one of the Seven Heavenly Virtues. Ironically, in her debut, she has practiced nothing but Injustice due to her prejudicial fear of Hell and Sinners by condoning genocide against them and tasking Adam to make sure that the verdict wouldn't go in Charlie's favor in the trial.
- Although Sera seems to be the mind behind the Exorcists, Vivziepop has commented that the Angel of Death, Azrael, may have been involved in creating these angels and may also be related to the Extermination.
- Sera serves as a dark parallel to Carmilla Carmine. Both serve as high-ranking and well known members in their realms who fear the idea of a war breaking out between demons and angels. Both also committed killings (Sera being indirectly responsible for the Exterminations while Carmilla killed an Exorcist in self-defense) and felt justified in what they did out of a desire to protect the ones they care about. Both also chose to hide their actions from the inhabitants of their realms, having trusting only a select few with their secrets, being fully aware of the consequences of what would happen if what they did became known to the public. At the same time however, Carmilla felt ashamed for what she did and Sera has felt guilt in allowing the Exterminations.
