Listen, you're getting on my nerves. And you know when I get nervous, my knife gets nervous. You see how it shakes? You see? I'm very crazy, Father. Very crazy.
~ Sergeant Ironstroke, as he attempts to murder the Father.

Sergeant Ironstroke, known as Sargento Caricias in the Spanish version, is a major antagonist in Alberto Vazquez's 2nd full-length animated feature film Unicorn Wars.

He is the abusive drill sergeant of Colonel Otto's Love Camp. Otto sends him and his soldiers out into the Magical Forest in order to find the Lone Owl Squad, who have been lost for days. When he is sent there, he slowly loses his sanity, and mentally breaks down when the Cuddly Wuddly twins are killed following them eating hallucinogenic caterpillars.

He was voiced by Manu Heras, who also voiced Papa in the film.

Appearance[]

Ironstroke is a tall, dark gray-furred teddy bear with a pear-shaped head and a cool gray snout. He wears a magenta uniform with a wide-brimed magenta hat.

Personality[]

On the surface, Ironstroke appears to be harsh and abusive to his soldiers, as he yells at and berates them on a regular basis, despite them being completely unfit for the military. When the recruits complain about having to eat dingy porridge, requesting they have blueberries instead, Ironstroke simply yells at them, informing them that they get no luxuries while at the Love Camp. This aggressive behavior is implied to be a guise however, as he appears to tremble in fear as his superior, Colonel Otto, orders him to bring his troops into the Magical Forest, and threatens that he risks losing his chances of getting promoted if he fails.

In actuality, Ironstroke is quite cowardly, bursting into tears on two separate occasions when things seemed hopeless during their trek through the forest. In times like this, he can be quite homicidal, such as when he threatened to kill the Father when he believes that the holy texts that he has been citing are more detrimental than helpful. Other times, he runs away crying, such as when a hoard of unicorns had attempted to kill his squad, now under the leadership of Coco.

Also of note is that Ironstroke is one of the few teddy bears that, at least initially, outwardly rejected the prophecy surrounding the genocide of the unicorns. He crosses his arms scornfully as he attends the Father's sermon, and he also believes that the Father's teachings are detrimental to any sort of progress the troops could make in the forest. However, when the Cuddly Wuddly Twins commit suicide following them eating centipedes, he begins to break down over the fact that he didn't heed the warnings stated in the holy book.

Biography[]

Ironstroke is first seen chastising the abysmal performance of Otto's most recent recruits. He tells them all that at their current rate, they wouldn't be able to survive being in enemy territory for even a second.

When Bluey wets the sheets, and manipulates Tubby into cleaning them so that he can blame him for it in front of the entire bunker, Bluey then shows the sheets to Ironstroke. Disgusted by the urine drenched sheets, Ironstroke encourages the entire squad to make fun of Tubby, and to call him "Bed-wetter" from now on.

The next day, Ironstroke is again seen chastising the squad for their abysmal performace during archery practice and telling them of how the best way to kill a unicorn is to shoot them in the neck, commenting on how they die a particuarly agonizing death when this is accomplished. He again shows scorn towards Tubby, the worst shot in the squad, face palming at his performance. He also commends Bluey for his exceptional abilities, only to then express being more impressed with Coco for his near perfect shots. He follows this up with saying that "being second is better than being the best loser", and promoting Coco to co-leader of the squad for proving himself to be the absolute best of the soldiers, much to Bluey's chagrin.

Later, the recruits are seen in the camp's church, where they are all told about how they are the rightful owners of the Magical Forest. All the while, Ironstroke is noticeably disinterested in the whole sermon, crossing his arms with a dejected look on his face. During lunch, when the recruits complain about having to eat dingy porridge instead of real food, Sergeant Ironstroke yells at them, telling them that they will have to eat the porridge, since the camp offers little to no comforts to its recruits in order to "toughen them up".

Ironstroke is then sent over to Colonel Otto's office, and Ironstroke gives his salutes to him before Otto tells him that those aren't needed. Otto and his colleagues then tell Ironstroke about his squad's mission to find the Lone Owl Squad, whilst also threatening Ironstroke that he'll risk losing his chances at being promoted if he fails, leaving Ironstroke fearful.

As Otto is initiating the mission, the Father gives out necklaces to the newly recruited soldiers, with Ironstroke rejecting the offer rather harshly. When Tubby shows up, much to the annoyance of most of the other recruits, Ironstroke tells Snuggles, who was the first to express annoyance at Tubby's arrival, that they'll bring Tubby with them, stating that he'll make a perfect pack mule due to him being fat.

Ironstroke, along with Coco, lead the expedition through the Magical Forest. At one point, a day after Snuggles' foot gets bitten by a poisonous reptile, the former begs the sergeant for a break, as the resulting infection from the bite proves unbearable. Though Ironstroke was initially against this, he allows it as soon as he sees how horribly infected his big toe had gotten.

Since the squad has nothing to eat but the dingy porride from the camp, Sergeant Ironstroke commends Bluey when he finds some myriapods for them to feast upon, though the Father is quick to tell them that the holy books forbid it, since the myriapods have hallucinogenic effects when they are consumed, being the "fruit of the devil". However, Ironstroke retorts by condeming the Father's preachings, saying that God can back off due to the soldiers having not eaten any actual food the whole expedition. When the Father attempts to offer the sergeant a necklace for his apparent "lack of morality", Ironstroke attempts to kill him, having been tensed up from the expedition thus far, with the only thing stopping him being Tubby and Coco restraining him. Ironstroke is then shown as being one of the teddy bears that experiences a collective hallucination after feasting on the myriapods.

The next day, the Cuddly-Wuddy Twins disappear, and the rest of the squad try to find them, only to find that they had both died during the trip. With one of the twins stabbing the other to death, mistaking them for a centipede monster, and said twin commiting suicide when they realize what they've done. This results in the Father yelling at Ironstroke for his careless act, deeming him "unworthy of bowing down to God", with Ironstroke expressing immense guilt for disregarding the holy book. Following this, he finally accepts the necklace the Father was trying to give him, shown in the scene where the squad mourns the twins' deaths. From this point forward, Coco leads the squad instead of Ironstroke.

As the squad continues their expedition, Ironstroke spots one of the Simians hiding behind a tree, which frightens him. When the squad finally makes it to where the Lone Owl squad set up camp, all they find is the squad's rotting corpses, mentally breaking Ironstroke for fear that he and the other squad members are going to die. After Coco cuts off Snuggles' foot, having turn gangrenous from the reptile bite, Sergeant Ironstroke, along with the other bears, burn down all of the rotting corpses that they find.

When the squad shoot arrows at Maria's mother, killing her, Ironstroke hides the whole time. Three more unicorns then charge at them, scaring Ironstroke. Ironstroke tries to run away before he is impaled in the chest by one of the unicorns, killing him.

Trivia[]

  • Sergeant Ironstroke is a homage to Sergeant Hartman, the infamously nasty drill instructor from the Stanley Kubrick 1987 war film Full Metal Jacket.
  • Ironstroke's Spanish name roughly translates to "Sergeant Caresses", which is ironic given his abusive nature and his name change in the English translations.
