Biography[]
Background[]
Sergei Malatov was born in Kiev and at some point spent four years in a Ukrainian prison.
Season 2[]
Sergei is tasked with collecting a shipping container carrying prostitutes, but when Sam Choksey, the crewman in league with the Greeks, doesn't signal him, he abandons the assignment. When The Greek learns that the girls had died, he sends Sergei and Spiros Vondas to the ship's next destination to find Sam Choksey.
Sergei and Vondas, pretending to be cops, abduct Sam Choksey in Philidelphia and bring him to a hidden location where Sergei beats him for information until The Greek arrives. After getting the information they need, Vondas kills him and Sergei disposes of the body by decapitating it and cutting of the hands to prevent identification, then dumping it into the water.
He has a friendly relationship with drug lord Propositon Joe, who is supplied by The Greek. When Ziggy Sobotka gets into debt with Joe's underlings, Sergei steps in to prevent Ziggy from being killed.
The police, in their investigation into the deaths of the girls and smuggling in the docks, find security camera footage of Sergei abducting Sam Choksey. Despite the head and hands being missing, they are able to identify Choksey's body due to his tattoos, and Sergei is promptly arrested. The police convince Sergei to turn on his superiors in exchange for a reduced sentence, but The Greek and Spiros have already fled from the states. Sergei is sentenced to life without parole and is sent to the Maryland Correctional Institute in Jessup - ironically, his most deserved murder is the one to get him caught.
Season 5[]
Marlo Stanfield tries to meet with Sergei to set up a connection with The Greek, but is instead met with Avon Barksdale, who is also serving time in Jessup and functions as something of an "authority figure" in the prison. Avon makes a deal with Marlo to give him access to Sergei if Marlo gives Avon's sister, Brianna, $100,000. Marlo accepts the deal and meets with Sergei. Sergei claims that he doesn't need Marlo's money or help, to which Marlo explains that he could Sergei could win back favor with The Greek by helping to establish Marlo as a new contact. Sergei then contacts Spiros Vondas about Marlo's interest in doing business with The Greek.
