I am Serges and I cannot allow you to stop the unification! It is for the good of all!
~ Serges before battling Mega Man X.
Defeated by the robotic memento of Light yet again… Such regret…
~ Serges' last words in the Japanese version, hinting at his true identity.

Serges (in Japanese: サーゲス, Sāgesu) is the secondary antagonist of the 1994 action-platform game Mega Man X2. He is the leader of the X-Hunters, a trio of Mavericks that have taken over Sigma's army since the latter's defeat. As he works in building a new body for Sigma and reconstructing Zero, Serges commands the Mavericks to continue rising up against humanity.

Appearance[]

Serges' outer shell strongly resembles an elderly, yet metallic man, with a white beard, spiky hair, red eyes, a large monocle, and a blue-and-red set of armor on top. Additionally, he often wears a black cloak with a gothic collar, making him strongly resemble Dr. Wily's "Mr. X" disguise from Mega Man 6.

Biography[]

Background[]

Little is known about Serges' past, other than that he was a Reploid scientist who went Maverick and joined Sigma's rebellion against humanity. However, even these basic details are disputed, as it is often speculated that "Serges" isn't even a Reploid at all, but rather a robotic body being controlled by Dr. Albert W. Wily as a means to evade death and continue his crusade against his lifelong rival, Dr. Thomas Light.

Regardless, after Zero sacrificed himself to stop Vile and Sigma was defeated at the hands of Mega Man X, Serges took control of the Maverick army to continue Sigma's uprising. He also recruited two particularly powerful Mavericks, Agile and Violen, and formed the X-Hunters.

Mega Man X2[]

Six months after Sigma's defeat, Mega Man X leads the Maverick Hunters in an assault on one of Serges' bases. Serges, having recovered Zero's parts, decides to use them to lure X into a trap by forcing him to fight the X-Hunters in order to get them back and rebuild his fallen friend. All the while, Serges continues to take orders from Sigma, who lives on as a computer virus, and constructs his master a new body.

If X recovers all of Zero's parts, then he can rebuild him and foil Serges' plan. If he fails to do so, however, then Serges will rebuild Zero and brainwash him into serving Sigma, only for Zero to be freed from his control after being beaten by X. Regardless of which path X takes, Serges will inevitably be destroyed by X in a final confrontation.

Trivia[]

  • While unconfirmed, it is heavily implied that Serges is actually the robotic reincarnation of Dr. Wily. Some evidence supporting this includes:
    • In the Japanese version of the game, Serges outright refers to Dr. Light by name (being the only character in the Mega Man X series aside from X himself to do so) and refers to X as "Rockman X", implying that he knows that X is both a creation of Dr. Light and the successor to the original Mega Man.
    • Also in the Japanese version, Serges uses his final words to lament being defeated "by the robotic memento of Light yet again", alluding Wily's many previous defeats at the hands of Mega Man.
    • In every version, Serges is shown to be obsessed with rebuilding Zero, despite it being completely unnecessary to his plan and potentially hindering his progress in rebuilding Sigma. Mega Man X4 eventually reveals that Zero is Dr. Wily's prized creation, explaining why "Serges" would be so fixated on recreating him.
    • As mentioned in the "Appearance" section, Serges' usual attire strongly resembles Dr. Wily's "Mr. X" disguise from Mega Man 6.
    • Later games further imply that Dr. Wily is still alive and actively aiding Sigma, increasing the likelihood that Serges himself was Wily all along. In Mega Man X5, Sigma mentions a "partner" who is experienced in building robots and holds a grudge against Mega Man. Mega Man X6 features Isoc, another Reploid scientist who resembles Wily, implying that Wily has many different robotic bodies to help continue his reign of terror.
