Serrano is a major antagonist in the 2012 video game Max Payne 3. He was the leader of the Comando Sombra favela gang, and the one responsible for the kidnapping, and later murder of, Fabiana Branco.
He was voiced by Babs Olausanmokum.
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Serrano's past, including his real name. His nickname was derived from the Serra da Mantiqueira, or Mantiqueria Mountains, in Brazil. What is known is that the man who would become known as Serrano was born sometime in 1984, possibly around São Paulo. His parents were African immigrants who came to Brazil sometime before his birth, and both of them died when he was 8 or 9 years old, around 1992-1993, leaving the young Serrano alone as an orphan. By the age of 11, he was living homeless on the streets of São Paulo, working as either a spotter for drug dealers or a pickpocket. By the time he turned 12, he had already committed his first murder.
Rise to power[]
At some point in the late 1990's, Serrano became involved with the Comando Sombra gang. According to files from the Unidade de Forças Especiais, he helped the CS change from a small street gang, to a highly-organized criminal organization spread all over the city that dealt with kidnapping and drugs. Sometime in 2006, he became the gang's new leader.
After becoming Comando Sombra's leader, Serrano became one of the most wanted men by the UFE. He was targeted in four different UFE operations from 2009 onwards, but managed to avoid arrest in each of them. Then in June of 2009, Serrano triggered a series of riots across São Paulo, which lead to rampages against law enofrcement, including attacks on state buildings and police stations.
Favela gang wars[]
After rising to power as leader of the Comando Sombra, Serrano would start fighting against the other gangs in the city in order to gain control over it and its favelas. The main two gangs he fought against were fellow street gang Tropa Z, and the paramilitary group Crachá Preto, led by ex-UFE captain Álvaro Neves. While the CS was able to defeat Tropa Z and take over their turf in the Nova Esperança favela, they could not manage to do the same to Neves and the Crachá Preto. By the year 2012, Serrano had been leading the CS into another massive gang war, this time for total control of São Paulo.
Organ harvesting scandal[]
Kidnapping Fabiana Branco[]
Later in 2012, Serrano targeted the Branco family, a wealthy family in São Paulo, and sent his men to kidnap the family patriarch, Rodrigo, and his wife Fabiana, during a charity party the family was hosting. The kidnapping attempt would be thwarted by Max Payne, a former detective from the United States who had been hired by the Brancos as a bodyguards. However, Serrano planned another kidnapping attempt, this time at a club frequented by Fabiana, her brother-in-law Marcelo, and her sister Giovanna.
A couple of days later, Serrano and his men would attack the club, and kidnap the Brancos while killing anyone would stood in their way, including famous football player Claudio. Max, along with his partner Raul Passos, would fight their way through the club to find and rescue their clients. While Giovanna and Marcelo were rescued, Serrano still managed to successfully kidnap Fabiana. Unbeknownst to him and the CS, both kidnapping attempts were set up by local politician Victor Branco, Rodrigo and Marcelo's brother, as part of a scheme to obtain control over the family wealth, and to make himself look good in the upcoming mayoral elections.
Following Fabiana's kidnapping, Serrano and the CS sent the Branco family a ransom letter, demanding three million dollars in Brazilian reais in exchange for Fabiana's life, threatening to kill her if they did not receive the money. With seemingly no other options, Rodrigo agreed to the deal, sending Max and Passos to the Galatians Stadium with the money, where the deal would take place. However, the Crachá Preto, tipped off about the deal, interrupted it, causing a shoot-out between them, the CS, and Max and Passos. While the deal failed, Max and Passos would be able to learn where Fabiana was being held.
Seeing no other option, Max and Passos tried to sneak into one of Serrano's bases near the Tietê River. As the former traveled through the docks, he noticed Serrano on a boat, conversing with two of his men, who were picking up crates from a truck. After Serrano drove away on the truck, Max killed the two men, and continued to move through the base until he found a video taping showing Fabiana's torture. He became involved in a massive shoout-out against the CS, and upon hearing about Max's presence, Serrano took Fabiana from the torture room and abandoned the base on an armored boat to escape from Max. However, the latter, thanks to Passos and his boat, would give chase, destroying every boat that Serrano had commanded. Eventually, Passos's boat crashed, giving Serrano an opportunity to escape, with Fabiana still his hostage.
Clash in Nova Esperança[]
A few days later, after interrogating a mortally wounded Crachá Preto member, Max arrived at the Nova Esperança favela, where Serrano's main base of operations was, in an attempt to rescue Fabiana, and take down Serrano and the Comando Sombra once for all. After meeting a detective named Wilson Da Silva, who told him where Serrano's hideout was, Max would be attacked by members of a different gang called the Fihlos de Ogum, but was able to fend them off. He noted that the gang was different from Serrano's group, and pressed on to find Fabiana.
Fighting through Nova Esperança, Max eventually found Serrano's "fortress," and after killing most of Serrano's bodyguards, he noticed that Serrano were "visited" by Giovanna and Marcelo, who came to the favela to pay off the ransom in an attempt to rescue Fabiana themselves. Serrano became angry after noticing that there was not enough money, and refused Marcelo's pleas to accept the money. Understanding that the deal did not go well, Max entered the room, telling Serrano and his henchmen that "no one [needed] to die," but his handgun was taken by the men, who held him at at gunpoint. Serrano aimed his gun at Giovanna's head, who screamed in fear, causing Max to angrily tell him not to kill her, and he responded with a simple "okay" before executing Fabiana with a shot in the head instead.
Before Serrano could kill Giovanna, Marcelo, and Max, the UFE and Crachá Preto, being led by Bachmeyer, began attacking Nova Esperança, causing him to shoot Marcelo in the knee to stop him from escaping. He and his men decided to flee, and take the bag of money, along with keeping Giovanna and Marcelo as hostages. Before he left, Serrano ordered one of his men to stay behind and kill Max, though the latter would knock him out and take his gun, and escape.
Capture and fate[]
During the massive clash in the favela, Serrano and the others were captured by the UFE, and sold to the Crachá Preto. While Max was fighting his way through the favela, and later escaping with Giovanna, Serrano and members of his gang were taken to the run down Imperial Palace Hotel, the Crachá Preto's base of operations, and the site of their and the UFE's organ harvesting ring. During his time in the Crachá Preto's hands, Serrano was heavily beaten and tortured. A couple hours later, Max, now working with Da Silva to uncover the truth behind the Crachá Preto and UFE's connections, broke into the hotel, fighting through dozens of the Crachá Preto's soldiers until he found the room where Serrano and the others were being kept. Telling the civilians to get out of the building, he stopped as he looked at Serrano, and commented to himself about the poor state he was in, which he described as "pathetic." After looking at each other for a short while, Max continued to fight his way through the hotel, while Serrano appeared to run away.
Later, Max stumbled into a room where a surgery was taking place. It was here where he discovered that Arthur Fischer, a famous plastic surgeon in the city, was harvesting people's organs as an accomplice of the UFE and Crachá Preto's scheme. While Max confront the surgeon on his actions, who begged for his life, Serrano, who was shocked by what he had seen, entered the room, and yelled at Fischer for what he had done, while the latter kept begging for his life. Max and Serrano stared each other, with the former pointing his gun at the latter, before, reaching an unspoken truce, the two nodded at each other, and Serrano turned to Fischer, taking a scalpel and moving towards the surgeon, before stabbing him to death.
This was the last time that Serrano was seen. After the incident at the hotel, which Max decided to destroy with C4 to end the organ harvesting ring once and for all, Serrano's fate was unknown. A day later, Max attacked the UFE's headquarters, in an attempt to kill the unit's commander, Armando Becker. During his assault on the base, he found a computer in a briefing room, where he learned that even the UFE were not sure about Serrano's true fate, listing his status as "Unknown."

Trivia[]
- Serrano is one of the few antagonists in the series to kill another antagonist, along with Nicole Horne, who had her men kill Angelo Punchinello, and Vladimir Lem, who killed Vinnie Gognitti.
- Along with Anthony DeMarco, Serrano may be one of the only antagonists who survive the events of Max Payne 3. However, this is unlikely, given the short amount of time between him killing Arthur Fischer and Max destroying the Imperial Palace Hotel, and since the hotel was abandoned and derelict, the elevators are presumably unusable, forcing Serrano to use the stairs to flee, and he was probably killed when the C4 was detonated, crushing him to death under the falling rubble. If this was true, then Fabiana's death would have been avenged, albeit unintentionally, as Max destroyed the hotel to stop the militia from harvesting more people's organs.
- His nickname, "Serrano," means "Highlander" or "Mountaineer" in Portuguese.
