Seth Duncan is a supporting character appearing in the Jack Reacher novel "Worth Dying For" by Lee Child. He was the adoptive son of Jacob Duncan who was also one of three people who ran a trucking company.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

25 years before the events of the book, when Seth was eight years old, he was often bullied at school and was taken in by Jacob. Seth and his family once touched a young girl who visited their house and after that, no boys or girls ever visited the Duncans again. One day, a little girl at the same age as Seth went missing and the girl's parents suspected that the Duncan's were responsible but there didn't exist any evidence against them and in retaliation, the Duncans stopped making deliveries to the family for an entire year. The father of the girl committed suicide soon afterwards.

Worth Dying For[]

Seth is encountered by Jack Reacher while at a stakehouse after his wife told Reacher he was out eating with som friends. He later told his adoptive father and his adoptive uncles about the encounter with Reacher and they decide that they need to take him out. Continuing their meeting, Seth reveals that one of their customers is getting tired of the shipment delays and after they found the bodies of two Cornhuskers that Reacher had dropped, they decided to pin the shipment delays on Reacher and get rid of him.

Seth later shows up in his wife's car and holds Reacher, Dorothy Coe (the mother of the girl who went missing), the doctor and his wife at gunpoint. He tells them to sit down on the ground, but due to the cold, Reacher manages to convince him to let them get their jackets, but he doesn't let Reacher get his because he don't trust him. Seth takes them all in to question them about Reacher and gets the Cornhuskers to lock up Reacher in the basement.

Seth is present in Jacob's house when Reacher attacks. Seth and his adoptive father tries to escape the burning building in Seth's car, but when it doesn't budge, they try to get away on foot and runs away in different directions. Seth crosses a field and makes it to the main road where he gets pursued by Reacher in an SVU. He desperately tries to shoot Reacher with his gun, but when he runs out of bullets, he tries to throw the gun at the car. However, the gun just bounces off and Reacher runs over Seth, killing him instantly.
