“ | Hmm…… The truth is…… to go overseas with father, was my way…… But Sister Setsuna, convinced my father Japan’s more than good, she said I’ll go wrong abroad…… | „ |
~ Arisu revealing the truth on why Setsuna went overseas. |
Setsuna was biologically the older sister to Arisu Suzujima despite their different surnames. 3 years before the events of the game, her parents separated leading to her family being in disarray, with the last day they happened to be together being the very day Asterism watched the Ongeki Primera’s performance in Budokan which they also witnessed. The plan was to have Arisu go overseas in the custody of her father while Setsuna stayed back in Japan with her mother. However, Setsuna persuaded her father for her to go abroad in place of Arisu who stayed back with her mother to protect her knowing very well of the uncertainties of the foreign Shooter academy, where she studied there until her return to Japan. In that shooter academy, Setsuna grew strong after having to endure the draconian customs they employed there; Shooters would sacrifice their humanity for the sake of winning. Meals there focused on nutritional efficiency with heavy emphasis on supplemental courses, no TVs, smartphones, or even windows in the room, and it was actually pointless to make friends there as they'll kick each other down in the near future anyway. It is also confirmed that her black uniform was custom-made for her during her time overseas, and at that time, she also picked up horse riding and playing the violin.
Some time in the present, after enrolling in Kanazaka, she took up three girls who would be known as her favorites, the Marching Pockets, as her apprentices. They consist of the younger sister of Saki Kashiwagi of 7evendays Holidays, Mia, Chinatsu Hinata and Tsumugi Shinonome. Setsuna served as their mentor and trained them to perform Ongeki, while also aiding her in her quest to overthrow Arisu and keep tabs on Asterism in their journey to becoming Primera.
Rise to power and defeating Asterism[]
Having waited for the opportunity to remove Arisu from power on one fateful monthly student assembly in Kanazaka, she shows up beside Arisu while she is making her speech, revealing to everyone that she is her older sister. Installing herself as the president, she explains several rules she intends to enforce to fix the “sorry state of affairs” that Kanazaka ran into during Arisu’s tenure. The attendance would be brought to 5am, supplements catered at the canteens, and an implementation of a compulsory after-class special course. Unbeknownst to her however, Akane Osaka is still in power as the student council president, and Kaede Kujo retorts that by explaining that the council president has emergency powers for in case a clash of opinions happens within the student body. Akane declares the start of an election to select who is most fitting for the role of headmaster. With everyone unanimously opposing Setsuna’s strict regulations, a general election is decided, but Setsuna drags the RBP to a duel to determine who or Arisu is better at being the president, easily defeating them and obtaining all their Cheer. During the battle, Akari notices a form of Ongeki completely different from the ones they’ve been using, Setsuna clarifies it as negative Ongeki, and she plans to enforcing its teachings throughout the academy to make others stronger, taking advantage of the bad emotions harbored by humans.
Akane reveals that the Arisu and the student council have orchestrated the events presented in Chapter 1 of the main story for Asterism after they enrolled at Kanazaka Academy as trials to improve their Ongeki handling skills and protect the Academy from Setsuna’s return. Kaede further explains the formula behind Arisu’s management, using that to explain why Asterism quickly rose to power, considering Ongeki as a fun and friendly competition so that performers could improve each other at a mutual level. However, Setsuna dismissed such an idea as pointless, creating a negative Ongeki to hurt each other. Aoi then notes that she tried to set up those stricter rules to have everyone harbor the bad emotions required for the negative Ongeki to take effect. The RBP suggest another plan, which is to accumulate cheer by forging an alliance with the other shooters.
But on the last day of the elections, only Asterism and RBP were present at the venue. Setsuna assumes that everyone is already here and tries to cut to the polling process to which Kaede pleads her to wait but Setsuna replies saying she brought over everyone, all standing at her side. Akane was worried about the other shooters betraying them while Akari asked if it is a misunderstanding. Rio says that they were willingly serving her, and Tsubaki clarifies tells them to be able to take it seriously if Asterism want their Cheers. Akari told them to give her a reason at least but Riku growls and says there’s no use asking, prompting a battle.
As revealed in Autumn Memory in a flashback, Setsuna spotted Triedge together in the same mall they worked part time at to raise money for a shooter fest, taking a detour on the way back after school. She asked if the focus headed to was not different and declares that co-op play is extremely lukewarm and no wonder to perform that kind of lukewarm Ongeki should be so. Tsubaki asks if games and Ongeki are different and thus they tried to play it as it is quite funny. Setsuna tells them to look at the rankings as she had placed her name throughout the game leaderboard with maximum score values all in solo plays, stating that Ongeki is the same thing. She tells them that sweet words like cooperation and friendship are far from victory. Rio tells Setsuna to not make assumptions, believing that by cooperating together, they definitely win the election as a result. Setsuna tells them they therefore cannot win to Asterism and are misunderstanding something called rivals. Setsuna explains her twisted theory at it to sway them and gaslights the insecure Rio asking if she can be satisfied with such Ongeki and that is the relationship she was looking for with Akari, then tells her whose view on rivalry is the better one. The first graders finally gave in, telling Rio to come and win to prove their own point, manipulating them over to her side.
Asterism managed to overpower Triedge with a furious Rio snarling of Setsuna being a liar though they did just as she said as aforementioned which is to treat their rivals as if they were steppingstones in their path to glory. Setsuna isn’t convinced, so she grabs her by the arm as a demonstration of negative emotions, dismissing it as “guidance”, not violence. However, Rio knocks away Setsuna from Akari, and comes to her favor. Telling Setsuna that she isn't getting carried away whether how strong and great she is, Setsuna complements her show of anger, and asks if she should have snapped at Akari just like earlier. Rio declares that she wouldn't be happy even if she won, which motives Akari to not forgive Setsuna. Setsuna taunts telling her to hate, detest and get angry more as the root of disproving Arisu's Ongeki, before asking her how long she can last in the following battle without harboring bad emotions. Arisu also notices the rest of the shooters standing with her big sister, as Akari struggles to suppress her emotions. Suddenly believing that using Triedge was out of the question, Setsuna lets them go as Akari still voices her desire for Ongeki to remain as a means of having fun together. Rio notes that Akari is getting angry due to her strong love for Ongeki more than anybody else, and naturally would be so at the dirty ways of it. Noting that it is a wonderful display of bad emotions as well as becoming of interest to her, Setsuna makes Akari her personal opponent, pushing her plans to fight 7evendays and Bitter Flavor to a bit later and challenges Asterism to a battle, to which she easily manages to beat flat, showing them the power of negative Ongeki which she intends to enforce the teaching of throughout Kanazaka as she proceeds to her next step at assuming the role of the academy president.
Final battle and defeat[]
Suddenly, the Marching Pockets who were after Asterism the whole time break into the election arena. Setsuna wasn’t pleased with her apprentices’ late arrival, she tries to tell her to come over to her side. They try to tell Setsuna their original purpose which is to help her in her goals of blocking Arisu from assuming power as president. Setsuna claims that such feelings were baseless impressions of sentimentality, but Mia confronts her saying that Asterism and the seniors taught them important lessons through having fun in Ongeki. Preferring their Ongeki over negative Ongeki, they turn against Setsuna by giving their Cheers to Asterism, placing the pressure on their former master and forcing her to leave for the president’s office. declaring the situation a loss of interest and leaves the rest to 7evendays Holidays. Akari defeats them and knowing that Koboshi was being usually desperate, asks if they somehow have a situation, and pleads them to talk to her if they like, having Koboshi tell her what happens if they lost. Saki tries to stop her remembering it was said they must not say that, only for Mia to ask her why she called her name. Saki, unable to hide it anymore, explains that the Marching Pockets lost at the Shooter Fest, so Setsuna was preparing to punish them, but if they were able to score a win over Asterism, Setsuna would forgive them. Mia is shocked at her older sister doing such a thing to be beneficial for the group. Koboshi says it’s sad to disagree and Tsumugi agrees that Setsuna did such behind their backs. Akari then assures that everyone is alright because they don't do as Setsuna likes and leads everyone to Setsuna's place to force her to stop. However, Haruna does not let everybody else pass, so Akari starts to worry about her. Aoi points out Haruna is also like having a situation and tries to have her talk to them for help.
Meeting at Budokan[]
Trivia[]
- Despite using the Fire element in game, charts that put up a reference to her sort her among the Aqua element characters due to her blue color scheme being set before she became playable, as confirmed by the charter Ryokkaiincho where he admits that he expressed Setsuna's color as blue for the players while considering the card attributes as separate.
