And now time resumes!

Easy-peasy. The law is just a big pushover. The country would be up a creek if a firefighter was found guilty. No sweat.
~ Setsuo before turning into an Infernal.
That's right. When I was a firefighter, I used to save people like this. I just saved your life. One might say that it now belongs to me, right? That means I can do whatever I want with you, right?!
~ Setsuo's philosophy.

Setsuo Miyamoto is a supporting antagonist in Fire Force. He is a former firefighter who snapped and murdered several people, before transforming into an Infernal in court. Unlike the other Infernals, who are tragic and suffering, Setsuo is sapient and retains the homicidal tendencies of his original self, believing himself to be more human than any other Infernal.

In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Kanehira Yamamoto. In the English dub, he is voiced by Brendan Blaber, who also voices Mummy from My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising and Mr. Puzzles from SMG4.

Personality[]

Setsuo is a crazed, mentally disturbed individual who loves killing for his own amusement. Despite suffering from mental illness, he is fully aware of his actions and even exploited his condition to fool the judge into giving him a "not guilty" verdict, then laughs about how easy it was to fool the law. Setsuo is also capable of feeling fear, such as when he panics as he transforms into an Infernal, but this only makes him more violent and ruthless.

After his transformation, Setsuo embraces his new existence as an Infernal and became more homicidal and enjoys using his pyrokinesis to kill as many people as he sees fit. He has no empathy towards even those who were on his side, as he strangles the judge to death and takes his lawyer hostage despite defending him throughout the trial. He sees himself as a superior lifeform as he has retained his human personality even after being transformed into a monster, due to his attachment to his own life and will being strong enough to keep his sapience intact.

When he meets the Fire Force, Setsuo emotionally manipulates the squad by feigning surrender while guilt-tripping them and hypocritically calling them murderers. He also says he's going to kill people the same way that the Fire Force kills Infernals, but not because he cares about other Infernals, but rather because he believes himself to be the only one worthy of living.

Overall, Setsuo is absolutely evil with neither his insanity nor being an Infernal interfering with his moral agency, and he is a maniac rotten to his core.

Biography[]

During his time as a firefighter, Setsuo became insane and psychologically disturbed, and killed four people for his own amusement. He was arrested and sentenced to court, where he was ruled not guilty on account of his mental illness. While the jury protests, he smiles and thinks to himself how easy it was to get away from consequences. As the course ends, Setsuo falls victim to the Spontaneous Combustion phenomenon, and the crowd jeers and mocks him due to their absolute hatred for the murderer. However, Setsuo smiles as he transforms, before emerging as an Infernal and proclaiming he'll kill everyone in the courtroom. Everyone except for the judge and a bystander whom Setsuo killed runs away, and the Infernal approaches the judge. The judge tells him that he spared him from arrest, but Setsuo kills him by strangling him with his flames, saying that he'll be the judge now.
