Villain Overview

The Seven Barian Emperors are the overarching antagonists of the first half and the secondary antagonists

of the second half of the the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime. Led by Nash, they are a group composed of elite Barians who have an agenda of stealing the "Numbers" and destroying the Astral World taking part in the Interdimensional War. According to Vector, there were originally seven of them, but after Nash and Marin's disappearance they were left with five and Dumon inheriting control.

Design[]

Etymology[]

Big Dipper

The Big Dipper, the constellation whose stars give their names to the Seven Barian Emperors.

Members of the Seven Barian Emperors are loosely named after one of the stars of the Big Dipper: Dumon after Dubhe, Alito after Alioth, Mizar after Mizar, Girag after Merak, Vector after Phecda (and also a nod to Hector of Greek Mythology), Nash after Benetnasch and Marin after Megrez.

Abilities[]

While on Earth, Barian Emperors are forced to take on a human form, not knowing that this form was the one they had from the time they were humans, although Dumon apparently only needs to do this if his Baria Lapis is damaged. The only major resemblance between both their Barian and human form is their hair, which only changes color. As energy beings, they are tolerant to pain, even in human form; Girag was able to take a punch in the face from Fender without so much as a flinch. After Earth and the Barian World began to merge, the Emperors were able to maintain their Barian forms on Earth.

They can travel from the Barian World using Overlay Networks and can also utilize the ability on Earth, vanishing and reappearing on a whim. Mizar showed the ability to fire energy balls for offensive purposes, though they do not cause lasting damage. These abilities can also be granted to humans. Vetrix, who made a contract with the Barians, was able to produce energy balls and use the aforementioned networks to travel.

The Seven Emperors also possess the ability to Rank-Up their Xyz Monsters by the use of "Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force", which lets them Summon "Number C" and "CXyz" monsters. "CXyz" monsters originate from the Barian World and are produced there as "weapons" to defeat the "Numbers". While in human form, Barians cannot wield them, but they can use "Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force" to brainwash humans into doing so for them. The brainwashing effect appears to vary from the individual controller; Girag's victims retain their personality but become obsessed with the Barian World, while Vector's victims are similar to sleeper agents, retaining their original personalities until the brainwashing activates at a later time, and when Alito controlled Nistro the latter was completely robbed of free will, period. In addition, if a Barian were to lose a Duel to a person using a "CXyz", they would vanish from existence, just as Astral would if he lost to a "Number".

Barian's Chaos Draw[]

Nasch - Chaos Draw

A Barian Emperor, Nash, performing the Barian's Chaos Draw.

The Barian's Chaos Draw (バリアンズ・カオス・ドロー Barianzu Kaosu Dorō) is an ability used by Nash. It is currently unknown what this ability does, although it is insinuated to be similar to Shining Draw. However, it should be noted that when Nash used this ability, it resonated with all the other Emperors in their Duels and all of them obtained the ability. When this power is used, the user is surrounded by a reddish-purple column of light. Upon using it, all Seven Barian Emperors(with the exception of Vector) drew Rank-Up-Magic The Seventh One.

History[]

Origin[]

Each of the Seven Barian Emperors bears a connection to a Number ruins and the Mythyrian Number that is hidden there. As confirmed by Astral and Dumon, the Barian Emperors were human once, with their previous life being described in the legend in each ruin. The group was led by Nash, the former emperor of the United Lands of the Poseidon Ocean. He was joined by his sister Marin and his right-hand-man and former knight Dumon. Other members of the group included the former emperor and Nash's archenemy Vector, the former dragon tamer Mizar, the former gladiator Alito, and the former shogun Girag. Each member was once a noble hero who possessed a Mythyrian Number. Their souls were intended to be reincarnated in Astral World upon death but their fates were changed by the Barian deity Don Thousand whose power had been sealed by the Mythyrian numbers. Dumon, Mizar, Alito, and Girag were killed after Don Thousand turned their allies against them. The Barian deity would subsequently corrupt their dying memories using an Over-Hundred-Number card, resulting in each hero being reincarnated in Barian World upon death. In the case of Vector, he was given his Over-Hundred-Number after his parents' death and was transformed from a well-meaning prince to a ruthless warmonger. His desire for conquest would put him at odds with Nash. Marin died after Don Thousand brainwashed her into sacrificing herself to summon a deity to defeat Vector. The two emperors would then engage in an all-out-war with each other's armies. After losing his entire army, Nash pursued Vector to his kingdom and defeated him in a shadow Duel. Vector was then dragged to the afterlife by his own citizens whom he had slaughtered. Nash, now alone, gave up his life to join Marin and his fallen Army in Barian World. Vector was also reincarnated as a Barian and despite losing his memories as a human, still maintained a strong animosity against Nash and Marin.

At one point, Vector's grudge against Nash reached a boiling point and he took Marin hostage. When Nash confronted him over a cliff, Vector used a spell to create an abyss under the cliff and threw Marin into it. Nash jumped without hesitation to save her and the two were once again reincarnated, this time as the humans Reginald and Rio Kastle. Vector believed them dead while Dumon believed they had only disappeared, assuming leadership of the Barian Emperors in their absence.

The Barians are at war with Astral World and seek to protect it from its envoy, Astral. One Barian, Mizar, specified that if they do not, then their own world will have "no future". For that reason, the Barians are bent on acquiring the "Numbers" to find the location of "Numeron Code" - the "God Card" that created the world and can decide fate. They cannot gather the "Numbers" themselves, so the Seven Barian Emperors manipulated and exploited humans into doing so for them. Five years before the World Duel Carnival, Doctor Faker sought to travel to a parallel dimension in hopes of saving his frail son Hart. After much searching, he was able to find and open a door to Barian World by sacrificing his friends Kazuma Tsukmo and Byron Arclight. Upon entering the new world, he met Vector who told him that he could save Hart if Faker obtained the Number cards for the Barians. If the Doctor failed, Vector threatened to take his son away. Byron Arclight also ended up in Barian World and having sworn revenge on Faker, wandered the new world until he was rescued by the Barian Emperors. They gave him Barian powers, tasked him with collecting the Number cards, and sent him back to Earth. At this point, Arclight's body had mutated into the form of a child and he took on the name Vetrix.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL[]

Although the Emperors do not appear in the first half of the series, their agenda is carried out through their agents Dr. Faker and Vetrix. Nash, as Reginald "Shark" Kastle, becomes a rival and close friend to Yuma Tsukmo and Astral. Marin, as Rio Kastle, is hospitalized following a duel with Vetrix's son Quattro. In the climax of the World Duel Carnival, Vetrix is defeated by Yuma and redeems himself by releasing the souls of his victims. Dr. Faker then uses the sphere field to steal the numbers and then duels against Yuma, Shark, and his son Kite Tenjo. After a remorseful Faker explains the reasoning behind his actions, he is possessed by Vector who continues the duel. Despite this, Faker is defeated and Vector is sent back to Barian World in disgrace.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL II[]

With the defeat of both human pawns, Vector and Dumon decided that they would have to intervene directly. To that end, Dumon sent Girag to Earth. On Earth, Barians can assume human form, though they do not decide their appearance and are unable to wield "CXyz" monsters. Girag brainwashes several Heartland Academy Students and tasks them with defeating Yuma Tsukmo for his number cards to little success. Unbeknownst to the other Emperors, Vector survived his duel with Yuma and took on the identity of "Ray Shadows" to gain Yuma's trust. Following Girag's failed attempts to get Yuma's "Numbers", Dumon sends Alito to try to take the "Numbers" from Yuma. Alito promises to stick to the mission but becomes infatuated with Yuma's friend Tori Meadows. Following a duel with Yuma, the two develop an intense but friendly rivalry with one another. Rio is also released from the hospital and becomes a friend to Yuma's group. She is able to sense the imminent arrival of Girag and later Mizar, likely due to her suppressed Barian powers.

After the constant failures of Girag and Alito, Dumon decides to send Mizar to Earth, giving him three "Baria Sphere Cubes" which let Barians collect "Numbers" themselves. Mizar's arrival was by a giant energy ball crashing into a forest, causing a deep crater. Mizar's attempt to defeat Yuma was interrupted by Kite Tenjo, who took over the Duel. Mizar ended up cancelling the Duel when the power of his "Number C107: Neo Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon" nearly destroyed the Barian Sphere Field.

Girag would then make another attempt, brainwashing a whole army of students, but Yuma was saved by Alito, who wished to defeat Yuma himself. Alito deployed his Barian's Sphere Cube, but was ultimately defeated by the power of ZEXAL. He was later ambushed by Yuma's friend Ray Shadows, prompting Girag to take revenge, believing Vector had been the one to ambush him. Girag ended up Dueling "Ray" and Yuma at the same time in his own Sphere Field. "Ray" revealed his identity as a "Barian's Guardian" and gave Yuma "Rank-Up-Magic Limited Barian's Force", allowing him to defeat Girag with "Number C39: Utopia Ray V".

Vector, who was believed to be dead, eventually emerged on Earth and used "Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force" to brainwash Umimi Habara, who Dueled alongside her husband Tobio Habara against Yuma and Anna Kaboom. This ultimately failed as well.

Afterwards, Vector challenged Yuma to a Duel where he purposely lost and gave "Number 66: Master Key Beetle" to Astral while kidnapping "Ray Shadows". Yuma and the others headed to Sargasso to save Ray, where three of the Barian Emperors awaited. Yuma, Shark, and Kite duel against Vector, Dumon, and Mizar respectively. It was there that Ray revealed himself as Vector during his Duel with Yuma, emotionally breaking the latter and causing Astral to lose trust in him, resulting in the use of Dark ZEXAL.

Dark ZEXAL recklessly attacked Vector's "Number 104: Masquerade" with "Number C39: Utopia Ray V" equipped with "DZW - Chimera Clad", taking damage in the process thanks to Vector's "Hundred-Over". At the last minute, Yuma and Astral separated from Dark ZEXAL after they regained trust in one another. This renewed trust allowed them to merge into ZEXAL II and create "Rank-Up-Magic - Numeron Force" to Summon "Number C39: Utopia Ray Victory" and defeat Vector. As Sargasso begins to collapse, the two other duels are terminated and the Barians are forced to retreat.

After Vector's Sargasso plan failed, he released Don Thousand and fused with him to begin searching for the Legendary Numbers. He informs Dumon and Mizar about the new plan, motivating the former by hinting at the possibility of finding Nash. Vector then uses Don Thousand's powers to speed up Alito and Girag's recovery.

Dumon encounters Yuma and his allies who are also searching for the Mythyrian numbers. He poses as a human to join Yuma's group as they discover the ruins associated with his past life. His past human memories are unlocked which allow him to aid Yuma in a duel against the Number's guardian. Dumon is then forced to reveal his true identity to save Shark's life. Vector is sent to recruit Number 96: Dark Mist on the orders on Don Thousand. The two then locate another Numbers ruin, this one associated with Vector's past life. When Yuma's allies arrives, Vector traps them in a cage while Astral duels Number 96. Using a Rank-Up Magic card given to him by Vector, Number 96 becomes Dark Storm but his duel with Astral eventually ends in a draw. Vector is then ordered to go back to Barian World as Alito and Girag have awakened.

Vector, Alito, and Girag surprise Dumon and Mizar with their sudden awakening. A vengeful Alito travels to another Number ruin and discovers his past life as a gladiator. After obtaining the Mythyrian Number, he brainwashes one of Yuma's allies Nistro and the two duel against Yuma and Dextra. The duel ends with Alito's defeat. At this point, both Astral and Dumon have caught onto the fact that the seven Mythyrian Numbers are likely associated with Seven Barian Emperors. At the fourth Number ruins, Astral deduces that Mizar was likely the former human associated with Number 46. Kite defeats the Number Guardian but is forced to postpone his duel with Mizar as the ruins begin to collapse. Sometime later, Girag sees a statue of his former self on TV and goes to investigate. He ends up trapped in the statue while the Number Guardian takes his body. Girag then helps Yuma as he duels against the Number Guardian who is revealed to be Girag's former partner Ponta. After faking a story, he absorbs Ponta and reclaims his body.

Dumon eventually comes to the conclusion that Shark and Rio are the missing emperors Nash and Marin. As Yuma's allies investigate the final ruins, Shark has to challenge Rio who has been possessed by the Number Guardian. Dumon also challenges Yuma but leaves to watch the duel between Shark and Rio. Through visions of the past, Shark, Astral, and Dumon finally confirm that Nash and Rio are indeed Barians.

Number 96 attacks both Astral World and Barian World which draws the attention of Yuma's allies as well as Vector and Don Thousand. With the power of Zexal, Yuma defeats Number 96 but Astral sacrifices his life to destroy the rogue Number. Afterwards, Vector absorbed what remained of Dark Mist and used the power to create more Dimension-Fusing Devices in order to fuse the Human World with the Barian World.

Vector restored Mr. Heartland to his human form and reincarnated Heartland's criminal mentor Chironex, as well as his associates Erazor and Scritch as Barians so Mr. Heartland could have underlings to assist him in defeating Yuma, Shark, and Kite. However, all but Mr. Heartland were defeat by Yuma, Kite, and Shark with the help of Trey, Quattro, and Quinton.

Yuma then goes to Astral World and after a duel with Eliphas, is reuinted with Astral. At the same time, Shark and Rio learned that they are really the two missing Emperors, Nash and Marin. Dumon awakened their memories and transported them to Barian World, where they returned to their Barian forms. The Dimension Fusing Device begins fusing Earth and Barian World with some humans being absorbed by the parallel dimension. As Vector watches the Duel between Kite and Heartland, he is called to an emergency meeting by the other emperors. There, he realizes that Nash and Marin have survived but do not remember his trangressions against them. Nash reaffirms his loyalty to the Barians and shares his power with the other Emperors.

After Yuma and Astral defeat Heartland, the Seven Barian Emperors arrive on Earth with Nash and Marin revealing their true forms and new allegiances. The emperors, with the exception of Vector, pursue Yuma and his allies. Using the Barian Chaos Draw, the Emperors defeat several of Yuma's allies. Vector observes Nash's duel with Quattro, taking note of the Barian leader's newfound power. He then uses the power of Don Thousand to brainwash Girag and Alito into becoming his enforcers. Trey and Quinton later trap Mizar, Marin, and Dumon in a sphere field so Yuma and Kite can escape. Mizar eventually defeats the Arclight brothers and goes to the Moon to confront Kite. Girag captures Nash while Alito challenges Yuma to a duel. Realizing that Alito has been brainwashed by Don Thousand, Yuma uses Number 54 to restore Alito's human memories. Despite no longer being under Don Thousand's control, Alito reaffirms his loyalty to Barian World and continues dueling. After he is defeated, Alito joins Yuma and Astral as they go to Barian World only to be confronted by Girag.

At the same time, Vector betrays Dumon and Marin, revealing his true intention is to absorb all their powers. Don Thousand confirms that the true purpose of the Seven Barian Emperors was always to act as sustenance for his eventual rebirth. Using the Don Thousand's Throne card, Vector tortures Nash and absorbs his life energy as he duels Dumon and Marin. Dumon ends up sacrificing himself to give Marin a better chance at defeating Vector. Despite his sacrifice and Nash's pleas, Vector defeats Marin with the help of Don Thousand. Vector then absorbs both Marin and Dumon's powers. Alito sacrifices himself to restore Girag's memories with the latter vowing revenge against Vector and Don Thousand. Vector then arrives and uses Number C43 to attack all present and Girag sacrifices himself to save Yuma. Girag and Alito's powers are subsequently absorbed by Vector who returns to Barian World to prepare for his confrontation with Nash.

Mizar duels against Kite on the Moon for the title of true Galaxy-Eyes master. Kite uses Number 46 to restore Mizar's memories but the latter continues to duel, refusing to accept his life as a human. He is able to defeat Mizar using his new Number 62 but suffocates to death after his spacesuit runs out of power. Mizar grieves the loss of his rival and vows revenge against Don Thousand.

Nash confronts Vector who has transported his former castle into the Barian World. The two then duel with Yuma arriving shortly after. Nash takes control of Number C65 and uses it to attack Vector's Number 104. Vector, having regained his human memories, seemingly lets go of his hatred and allows Nash to attack him. In reality, this was a ploy to get Nash to activate his trap card and regain the upper hand. Vector then consumes the power of the absorbed emperors to take on a new form. He then "destroys" Don Thousand and continues the duel. Nash, however, is able to use Number C72 to defeat Vector's Number C5, ending the duel. Vector refuses to accept defeat and tries to destroy the arena only to be confronted by Don Thousand. Having no more use for the rogue emperor, Don Thousand tries to absorb Vector. Yuma tries to save Vector who laughs and tries to take his enemy down with him. When Yuma responds by showing compassion and forgiveness, Vector finally has a change of heart and allows himself to be absorbed. Don Thousand then transforms into his energy form and is challenged to a duel by Mizar. Using the Numeron Network, Don Thousand rewrites Mizar's card and defeats him in a single turn. Now having absorbed six of the seven emperors, Don Thousand reveals his true form.

Yuma and Nash duel Don Thousand who finally reveals that Nash joined Barian World on his own accord. Despite the power of Number CI.!000, Yuma is able to defeat the Barian deity with the aid of Kite. As he lays dying, Don Thousand laughs and transfers his remaining energy over to Nash. Still intent on protecting his home, Yuma and Nash have their final duel with the fate of Astral World and Barian World on the line. The spirits of the other emperors aid Nash during the duel but Yuma is still able to defeat him. Accepting his defeat and his friendship with Yuma, Shark passes on.

After Yuma defeated Astral, the Barian Emperors were revived by the Numeron Code as humans. With the exception of a redeemed Vector, all of the emperors attend Heartland Academy. When a new threat appears in Astral World, the Seven Barian Emperors accompany Yuma's allies to face it.
