Seymour Krelborn is the main protagonist of all versions of Little Shop of Horrors. He’s shown to have a huge secret crush on Audrey and he wants to marry her - however he could never tell her as she had a boyfriend and he was way too shy. He’s also the owner of the plant Audrey II.
Although not initially evil himself, Seymour ends up committing several crimes influenced by Audrey II's manipulation and promises of success, leading to him crossing several moral boundaries in order to feed the plant in hopes of keeping the flower shop afloat and gaining Audrey's affection.
He’s portrayed by Jonathan Haze in the 1960 film and Rick Moranis in the 1986 film.
Personality[]
Initially, Seymour is a genuine, caring and well intentioned man. He’s a man who’s often ignored and is looked down upon because of his clumsiness and poor social skills. However, throughout every version, he undergoes a villainous turn where he’s willing to kill people to feed them to Audrey II so Audrey II can give him whatever he desires. This villainous turn does end however as he realizes what he has caused and attempts to take Audrey II down.
Biography[]
Little Shop of Horrors[]
Seymour Krelborn, a struggling young man from Skid Row, comes across a very strange and interesting plant. He buys it for $1.95 from a Chinese flower shop and doesn't initially think much of it. However, when he cuts himself, and it shows that it wants his blood, he ends up feeding his blood to it. This ends up causing the plant to grow to a big size - to a point where he puts it in his flower shop and it massively helps grow the business as many people come in looking at the 'strange and interesting plant'. He names it Audrey II, after the worker he loves.
Seymour sees how horrible Audrey is treated by her current boyfriend, Orin Scrivello. This, along with the fact he physically can no longer feed Audrey II blood (Who has grown to a massive size), leads to him killing Orin in order to feed Audrey II. He also does this due to the fact Audrey II promises him whatever he desires. However, Mr Mushnik catches Seymour in the act and confronts him about it. Mushnik offers to let Seymour go if he gave Mushnik Audrey II - and Seymour faux obliges as he tells Mushnik fake ways to feed Audrey II while leading Mushnik to Audrey II's mouth. In the original musical, Seymour actually pushes Mushnik into Audrey II's mouth.
Seymour becomes a overnight celebrity, however is tormented by the guilt of killing people for Audrey II and doesn't want to kill any more. He considers killing Audrey II with an axe - however worries he will lose Audrey if he does so. Audrey II asks for a meal - so Seymour goes to buy some meat from the store rather than killing another human. However, Audrey II calls Audrey and lures her to the shop for her next meal.
The film has two different endings, differing how Seymour's fate goes on by this point. Only the Theatrical ending was shown in theatres in 1986. The original ending, considered too dark by audiences, known as the Director's Cut Ending, garnered its own theatrical release more than thirty years later in a three day event (October 29-October 31, 2017). This ending was released in Blu-Ray in October 2012 and had black and white footage prior to the release and was shown in VHS Workprints.
Theatrical ending[]
Seymour rescues Audrey from Audrey II and takes her to the back alley where he is confronted by someone who tells him he will be selling mini Audrey II's around the country and wants to know if Seymour will accept. Seymour refuses and realizes what Audrey II's true intentions were - so he goes back into the shop to attempt to take it down. Audrey II torments Seymour - 'busting his balls', pulling his pants down, and destroying his shop. However, Seymour survives and ends up electrocuting Audrey II, exploding it in the process. The flower shop is destroyed and Seymour reunites with Audrey. Audrey and Seymour get married, move out of Skid Row and live in a beautiful home which Audrey had dreamed of. However, an Audrey II bud is seen in their garden, implying their troubles may not be over.
Original ending[]
Seymour is unable to rescue Audrey as she dies in his arms. Her dying wish is to be fed to Audrey II - and Seymour obliges, giving Audrey II one last meal before he goes on top of the roof and considers killing himself. He is stopped by a wealthy businessman who offers to sell Audrey II clippings internationally. He presents Seymour with a clipping, cut from Audrey II. While Seymour refuses, the businessman does it anyway.
Seymour, realizing Audrey II's true intentions of world domination, returns to the store and attempts to kill Audrey II. Audrey II tears down the shop, torturing Seymour just like in the Theatrical version - however, this time, Seymour is unsuccessful in stopping Audrey II and actually gets eaten. This causes Audrey II to laugh sadistically and ends up causing the end of the world.
Original Musical[]
Similar to the original ending - however, rather than the pathetic death he receives in the original ending, he dies jumping into Audrey II's mouth in the musical, attempting to slice it's pod from the inside.

Trivia[]
- Seymour wears boxers as is shown when Audrey II pulls down his pants.
- In the 1960 movie, Seymour has parents rather than being an orphan.
- While not explicitly shown, it’s implied Seymour may have killed more people than is shown as Audrey II grows to an enormous size as Seymour's fame and celebrity status grows. However, this is primarily a theory.
- The film version of Little Shop of Horrors goes out of its way to make Seymour nicer - while still a villain for the majority of the film, he’s portrayed as much more remorseful and much less willing to follow Audrey II. Furthermore, in the original musical, he actually pushes Mushnik into Audrey II rather than just leading him to his death.
