The Sha are major antagonists in World of Warcraft, serving as the secondary antagonists of Mists of Pandaria. Eons ago during The Pantheon's battle against the wicked Black Empire, Y'Shaarj, the most evil and powerful of the Old Gods was proving to be undefeatable by the Titan's forces. In a moment of great anger and perhaps desperation, Highfather Aman'Thul reached down from the heavens themselves and ripped the wicked Old God from the planet. With his last breath, Y'Shaarj cursed Pandaria to be haunted by his evil for all time, and from the cosmic horror's corpse would arise the Sha.
The embodiment of negative emotions, the Sha represent the worst negative feelings and both spread and amplify them into all living things around them, with the most powerful Sha able to influence things in a radius of several miles. While the Pandaren lead peaceful and calm lives, masterfully able to control their negative emotions and in turn keep Sha activity on their country to a minimum for thousands of years, the arrival of the war between the Alliance and the Horde shattered this peace and unleashed these dark monstrosities at full power.
History[]
Over 100,000 years ago in the primordial age of Azeroth, from the darkness of the void the Void Lords sent the Shath'Yar out into the cosmos. Four of these Old Gods would make their way to the new planet and proceeded to slam into its surface and burrow themselves deep into it. In time the Black Empire would rise, and the Old Gods would permanently wage way against one another with their followers to bring about chaos and ruin across Azeroth. When the Titans arrived, the battle for the future of the planet began. While the Titan's forces had degrees of success against the eldritch horrors, Y'Shaarj, the most wicked and powerful of the Old Gods proved to be too much for them, prompting divine intervention from the Highfather Aman'Thul himself. Reaching down from the cosmos beyond, Aman'Thul slew Y'Shaarj and tore him from Azeroth himself. However, this victory came at a terrible price; The Old Gods had planted themselves too deep within the world, and the act of killing Y'Shaarj caused drastic damage to the still growing planet. The Pantheon then turned their intention to instead prevent further corruption, and imprisoned the remaining three horrors within special Titan facilities.
But before Y'Shaarj met its end, with its last breath, it cursed the land in which it was imbedded to be haunted by its evil. From the Old God's corpse dark, horrible powers spilled forth and would coalesce into new beings. The Sha had been born, and would proceed to haunt the depths of the land that would eventually become Pandaria for thousands of years.
The Pandaren, a people of peace and harmony, who's teachings gave them remarkable control over their negative emotions, used their way of life to keep the wicked Sha dormant and trapped for eons. Even when a Sha did manage to manifest on the surface, it was generally a lesser one and was quickly disposed of. 10,000 years ago at the time of The Great Sundering, in an attempt to save his people from this cataclysmic disaster, Pandaren Emperor Shaohao embarked on a journey to purge himself of negative emotion. While he ultimately succeeded, his victory came at a price, for the Emperor unknowingly had his actions influenced by the one emotion he was unable to purge; Pride. Becoming one with the land, Shaohao shrouded Pandaria in a protective mist, but also at the cost of isolating his people from the outside world. Still, with his emotions released from himself, they found their way into the seven Prime Sha, who watched and waited for ages to come.
10,000 years later, when the conflict between The Alliance and The Horde was reaching a boiling point, by chance, these two factions accidentally made landfall on the lost continent of Pandaria. As the mortals from the outside world did not share the lifestyle nor training of the Pandaren, their hatred, their rage, all of their negative emotions exploded into Pandaria, and at long last the Sha broke free to the surface. With lesser Sha causing untold mayhem across the land, the seven Prime Sha had their sights on far greater and more sinister goals. The Sha of Anger would rise in Kun-Lai Summit, spreading uncontrollable rage across the realm. Despair overtook one of the Pandaren's most revered and sacred areas, the Temple of The Red Crane. Doubt likewise consumed the Temple of The Jade Serpent, while Fear corrupted everyone and everything within the Terrace of Endless Spring while also taking complete control of the Mantid Swarm by consuming the mind of their Empress. Hatred possessed and nearly succeeded in killing one of the Pandaren leaders Taran Zhu, while Violence would momentarily be imprisoned in the Shado-Pan Monastery before breaking free and unleashing havoc there. The seventh, final and most evil one, Pride, did not break free with his kin and laid imprisoned deep within the earth. But once Garrosh Hellscream went mad with power and genocidal rage, it took broke free. All seven would in time finally be vanquished by the Adventurers.
