Shadow (Doctor Who)

The Shadow is the secondary antagonist of the Doctor Who story "The Armageddon Factor".

He was portrayed by the late William Squire, who also played Lee Thomas in When Eagles Dare and the Kommissar in Blake's 7 and voiced a Sub-human in Fire and Ice.

Biography[]

The Shadow was a mysterious servant of the Black Guardian who was the Doctor's opponent in his quest for the Key to Time. He had manipulated events to cause a war between Atrios and Zeos, with the aid of his followers, the Mutes. He had fitted the Marshal of Atrios, who led their war effort, with a control device and had the renegade Time Lord Drax construct the computer Mentalis, which controlled the fleet of the deserted planet Zeos. He also had Mentalis fitted with the Armageddon Factor, a programme that would cause it to destroy both Atrios and Zeos in the event of defeat. He controlled operations from a third planet located between the two.

The Shadow was also aware that the sixth segment of the Key to Time was located in the system and awaited the arrival of the Doctor, who he knew would bring the other five segments. He had his Mutes capture Princess Astra of Atrios, who he suspected knew something about the segment, and fitted her with a control device. He also captured the Doctor but found he was immune to his control. With the Doctor refusing to allow access to the TARDIS where the remaining segments were, the Shadow left him alone for the time being, believing he would eventually help him without realising it.

The Shadow instructed Mentalis not to make any more attacks on Atrios and then encouraged the Marshal to attack Zeos. He knew that this would trigger the Armageddon Factor. The Doctor and Romana slowed him down by using the incomplete Key to Time to trap both the Marshal's ship and Mentalis in an unstable time loop which would slowly allow more time to pass. The Shadow used Astra to lure the Doctor and Romana to his planet and also lured K9 there and placed him under his control. Communicating with the Doctor and revealing his allegiance, the Shadow announced that the war between Atrios and Zeos was merely a test for what he and the Black Guardian would do to the whole universe when they had the Key, setting one side against the other.

Having Romana and Astra brought to him, the Shadow sent his Mutes after the Doctor. They managed to get into the TARDIS and retrieve the incomplete Key. It was then that it became clear that Astra actually was the sixth segment, as she reverted to that form. However, the Doctor and Drax had freed K9 and used him to enter the Shadow's inner sanctum, retrieving both Romana and the Key.

As the time loop neared an end, the Doctor, Romana and Drax managed to disconnect Mentalis and set up a force-field around Zeos. As a result, when the Marshal attacked Zeos, his missiles bounced off and instead struck the Shadow's planet, killing him.
