Shadow Androids are supporting antagonists in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. They are robotic duplicates of Shadow the Hedgehog created by of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.
Description[]
Appearances[]
As copies of Shadow the Hedgehog, the Shadow Androids are nearly identical to him in every way. However, there are some that are colored differently, whether slightly or vastly. While some try to replicate the organic look of Shadow, others have their metallic exteriors fully exposed.
Personalities[]
Basic Shadow Androids have no real personalities of their own as their only function is to serve Eggman. But there are some androids with the personality of the actual Shadow.
Abilities and Powers[]
Basic Shadow Androids are incredibly strong and agile, and can shoot missile from their hands, but are not as intelligent or strong-willed like the real Shadow. Some androids do have some intelligence, and some have special weapons attached to their arms.
History[]
Creation[]
After the events of Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman rescued Shadow during his fall to Earth and kept him in a stasis cell within a hidden room with E-123 Omega to guard him. Using Shadow's bio-data, he began making bio-mechanical duplicates of him to serve him in his later plots.
Sonic Heroes[]
When Rouge the Bat released Shadow from his confinement, Omega, who became angry with Eggman for sealing him away, attempted to destroy Shadow under the belief that he was one of Eggman's robots, which confused Rouge. She broke up their fight and all three formed Team Dark to sought to find Eggman for personal reasons.
After defeating a fake Eggman in Rail Canyon, the trio found a severed Shadow Android, leading them to wonder if Shadow was a copy as well. Then after vanquishing another fake aboard the Final Fortress, Rouge is shocked to discover a room filled with Shadow Androids within stasis cells just like Shadow's. However, Omega comforted her by stating that creating physical copies of someone would be impossible unless the original still existed.
Shadow the Hedgehog[]
The Shadow Androids are finally put to use by Eggman during the invasion of the Black Arms. Shadow first encounters them in Iron Jungle when he teleports there, where he is surprised to see several of them standing in attention. Eggman then appears and orders them all to defend his base, with a stunned Shadow wondering if he is an android as well. When he confronts Eggman for the answer, the evil doctor immediately takes advantage of his confusion and lies that he is indeed one of his creations, causing Shadow to become distraught.
If he chooses the Neutral path in Iron Jungle, Shadow accepts Eggman's lie that he was an android and that the real Shadow had died. Going mad with this thought, he becomes determined to surpass the original Shadow as well as destroy Eggman and take control of his empire to create a world where androids reign supreme. However, during the final battle with Devil Doom, Eggman reveals to Shadow that he is indeed the original and not just some copy.
Shadow Androids also appear in Multiplayer mode where players take control of them to fight one another. Each of them seems to consider themself the real Shadow, dismissing all others as fakes.
Sonic Speed Simulator[]
A lone deactivated Shadow Android appears during the "Android Anomaly" event. During this event, Mechanic Tails has caught an orange model and, due to the strange occurrences happening around the world, wants to reboot the android and reprogram it in order to see if Dr. Eggman had anything to do with it.
In the very next event "Hologram Havoc", Dr. Eggman launched an invasion on both Green Hill and Lost Valley to try and take the android back. After fighting him off, the repurposed android returns one final time as part of the "Release Shadow" event, where it's used alongside a holographic Metal Sonic in order to free Shadow from the confines of a mysterious pyramid.
Additionally, the orange, green, blue, and pink variants are unlockable as playable characters.
IDW Comics[]
The Shadow Androids appear in the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, making their debut during the Tangle and Whisper storyline. It is revealed in a video flashback that the Shadow Androids were used by Dr. Eggman to murder the Diamond Cutters after Mimic betrayed them by leaving them to be sealed in a room with them, leaving Whisper the Wolf as the only survivor as she was outside at the time. This event led her to become somewhat resentful of the real Shadow.
The androids return in the Urban Warfare story, where after Sonic and friends took out a building in Eggperial City, Dr. Eggman dropped a mass amount of androids from a Blowfish Transporter directly onto the team. Much more dangerous than before, the real Shadow eventually had to use Chaos Control in order to survive, but in doing so, drew so much power from the fake Chaos Emeralds surrounding the city that he overloaded, destroying a large chunk of the city in the process. While a few stragglers survived the blast, they were heavily damaged, and were much easier to destroy.
