The Shadow Children are supporting antagonists in the indie horror video game Little Nightmares, serving as the secondary antagonists of "The Residence" chapter in the DLC campaign Secrets of the Maw. Made out of a dark aura, the Shadow Kids are aggressive child-like creatures created by the Lady to guard her residence in the Maw. They lurk in the darkness, lunging at small children and stealing their souls.
Characteristics[]
Like The Lady, these characters wear white masks on their faces. Their body appears to be nothing but black mist, their masks being the only solid part of their bodies. These creatures lurk in dark areas, at first appearing from under furniture but then appearing standing in the dark and hiding in the shadows. They don't begin appearing until the lights are completely out. Similar to the Patients, these characters have a weakness to light, except they will die rather than just stand still if it is shined onto them.
Like most antagonists in the game, these characters chase after the protagonist once they spot them. In many ways, these characters are similar to the Bullies as they both hunting in groups, hide from the player until they find the right time to strike, and then jump at the player. Unlike the Bullies, they steal the souls of their victims.
The identity of these children is vastly unknown. Their identity could be many things, including the souls of the children that The Lady turned into Gnomes, but for they just appear to be lost/trapped souls. We know that they are children because they are about the same size as the children protagonists, and because they make child-like laughter when hiding in the background.
Appearance[]
They appear to be children about the same size as the other protagonists with black misty bodies and white glass masks on their face. The white masks of the children very in design. The Shadow Children are about the same size as the regular children.
History[]
We first see a shadow child when we enter a puzzle room involving books. They will be lurking in a dark area of a bookshelf with a latter on it.
After the Runaway Child solves a puzzle involving small statues, he will walk out of the room and a large mist from the floor will hiss and escape into the next room. Once in this room, the Children will be seen standing and staring into nothingness or will appear out from underneath furniture. They will quickly begin attacking by lunging at the child and trying to steal his soul.
They next appear in a room filled with stacked books. The child will need to carry the chair over to a door to open it, but defeat the children first. The next room is filled with book shelves, and this time the children won't try to hide but instead begin their attack once they are approached.
They are last seen in a room where the child must spin a wheel to make a framed picture descend into the floor to reveal the exit. They will attack him the entire time, until he escapes the room.

Trivia[]
- These children are somewhat similar to the static children from Little Nightmares 2. From the clues left in that game, it can be concluded that they are the souls of children kidnapped by the Thin Man, therefore we may conclude that these are also lost souls.
