I watch within the shadows.
~ Syo5 (K-9), on his role within The Walten Files.
SHADOW MAN SEES ME WHEN LIGHTS GO OFF.
~ Bon.

The Shadow Man is a minor character in The Walten Files.

In all of his appearances, he attempts to show the truth, in ways that are not exactly healthy, but are required for the situation at hand. It is unknown whether this is to help or hurt Sophie Walten, but what is known is that he will reveal the truth about what is happening.

Appearance[]

The Shadow Man appears as a black humanoid figure, sometimes with and sometimes without eyes. He is usually in animated media, and has not once appeared as a more "realistic" or "life-like" figure.

Biography[]

In his first appearance in the Technical Support tape in the second episode, the Shadow Man follows around the Sha that is explaining the inner workings of the K-9 facility, and eventually he stays in the shot in the bottom of the room, as Sha exclaims she's been in the room already as she cries. She then walks to the bottom corridor and touches him, before the video severely glitches out, and puts Sha back in the middle. She then asks Sophie where she is, before she starts glitching out between Sha and Rosemary, with a picture of Rosemary on the wall. She eventually stops on a shadowy version of Sha, before showing the scene of Rosemary finding Bon in the maintenance room after being lured into it. Bon tells her she's broken, and will fix her, and she will beautiful. She is then shown to be dismembered, before she is carried by Bon into the Sha animatronic. The Shadow Man then appears in the room, with Bon now crying, as the Sha is now bloodied with an agonized face.

At the end of the second episode after the credits, Bon says the Shadow Man sees him when the lights go off, before showing a small teaser for Bunnyfarm, with the main four characters sitting in front of a barn, and a character we now know as The Showbear hiding in the back behind the trees.

In the third episode, he first appears after the first in-game cutscene for BunnyFarm, after it glitches out greatly, only appearing for a split second in the background, replacing one of the white characters we saw walking around. After this, we see a reference to him much later in the video, in Boozoo's "Spot the Difference" minigame, he shows a picture of Billy playing with toy a toy car and three action figures, with one side showing an action figure as blue in his hand, and two of the action figures as green and smiling, the blue figure then becomes black in the other image, representing the Shadow Man, while the other two green actions figures become red.

After the Magic Fountain of Memories sequence begins, we see a black figure at the beginning, quietly standing by the wall, before Rocket ushers Sophie to follow him. As Sophie follows him, all figures except him become nothing but the black figures.

He may also appear as the entity speaking at the end of Lucky You, talking about beauty to Sophie. Or he may be the other voice, saying "Safety in Pills", and being an apologist for Felix Kranken.

Theorized Identities[]

Felix Kranken[]

Boozoo SpotTheDifference

Boozoo's third Spot The Difference image in BunnyFarm.

In his first appearance, we can see the Shadow Man appear in the maintenance room, and some have noticed when this happens, Bon is crying. Bon may be being forced to kill her, and the figure may be Felix Kranken making sure the deed has been done, and wants to begin to hide Sha after this event. Bon's quote at the end of Episode Two can also be used, and can be interpreted as Felix having nightmares about Bon, or, watched Bon quietly while he moves in the darkness. This is later supported by the last day of Bon's Burgers operations, only letting two families in, but not showing any of the animatronics. Felix is the only one to make those levels of executive decisions for the restaurant, as far as we know, and it's suspicious he'd run the restaurant after viewing such an incident.

He is also related to the Shadow Man through Boozoo's Spot The Difference image. The first figure is a blue figure with a car and the two other figures being with him. This is Felix, his car, and Ed and Molly Walten. He was wearing a blue suit the day the accident occurred, so this is how he is represented. After the car crash, Ed and Molly become the red children, as they represent themselves in BunnyFarm, while Felix becomes a completely black figure. In the in lore song "Slowly", The Lyrics "Shadow Man watches from the Dark. He knows he wrecked that car and swears he had no part. He's got no heart." could be referencing The May 2, 1974 Accident where Felix crashed his car, killing Edd and Molly Walten in the process and how he tries to cover it up and create a fake personality of a loving caring man with a a huge brain and heart.

Jack Walten[]

PR ShadowMan

The Pumpkin Rabbit and The Shadow Man.

Some people believe the Shadow Man is Jack Walten due to the static nature of his ghost, and believe that Jack is the only person able to see these incidents, as he was the first to die (possibly), and is most likely attached to Bon in some capacity, but cannot control him. He wants to show it all to Sophie. The corpse in The Pumpkin Rabbit that we connect to Jack inside Bon has a striking resemblance to The Shadow Man when he has eyes.

Sy05 (K-9)[]

With Sy05 being just as mysterious as The Shadow Man, referring to each episode of The Walten Files as "pieces of a puzzle", it's not surprising that many connected the two due to their truth seeking/revealing nature. Sy05 has also said in Base 64 coded messages that he "watches from the shadows", as seen above. In Lucky You, he speaks to the viewer telling them that the story is not complete, and that "He" is sorry. He then starts saying "Safety in Pills, Sophie". It is unknown if this is still Sy05, but if it is, then he is on the side of Felix, or at least against having Sophie regain her memory.

The Showbear[]

Showbear

The Showbear.

Though we don't know who Showbear represents, The Showbear shares very similar properties and behaviors to The Shadow Man, wanting to show the truth to Sophie by bending the rules of the media they are transmitting through, and hiding in plain sight, quietly watching everything unfold. When asked who he is, The Showbear did not have an answer, either because it wasn't important, it was too important, or Sophie would not understand what he is, even if he explained. Hence, The Shadow Man. He also shares the same goals as The Shadow Man, wanting to have the memories from 1974 resurface. He is also shown at the end of Episode Two to be hiding in the trees, as Bon says The Shadow Man sees him.

Sophie Walten[]

The Viewing of PostMortem

The Witness.

We mainly see proof of this in the second episode when The Shadow Man walks in on Bon. Some theories have pointed to Sophie Walten to be the one that led Rosemary Walten, her mother, to her death by Bon, due to her asking Sophie where she is, referring to her confused on why she is in the maintenance room. After Rosemary is killed, we see The Shadow Man walking into the room, with what we can assume to be sad looking eyes. Some believe this is Sophie Walten viewing the death of her mother, and conclude it is the reason she's now on the medication that represses her memory. This is supported by Rose asking Sophie if she's still beautiful to her, with some concluding this is meant to ask if she's beautiful despite the event she witnessed all those years ago.

Sophie Walten's Subconscious[]

While some believe it to be Sophie Walten herself, others believe The Shadow Man is a representation or a hallucination meant to represent the memories and events that Sophie forgot in 1974. He simply reveals or enacts the things that Sophie already has buried deep inside her mind, as multiple different people, or as the force to manipulate the media into showing these events. It is simply the things that are pushed deep inside the mind coming back out, regurgitated in horrifying and confusing ways to Sophie. This does not exclude The Shadow Man being The Showbear, as he had the power to sort of project her memories using BunnyFarm.

"Beauty"[]

The Shadow Man may be a representation of The Walten Files idea of beauty, with The Shadow Man, a boundless and formless non-corporeal entity, being the penultimate form of something that has been "changed" by Bon. Something that Bon notes can see him in the darkness, quietly watching for eternity.
