You have never been anything more than a nuisance to me! I've kept you around this long because Adora was fond of you, but if you ever do anything to jeopardize her future, I will dispose of you myself. Do you understand?
~ Shadow Weaver threatening a young Catra.

Shadow Weaver, formerly known as Light Spinner, is the secondary antagonist of the 2018 Netflix original series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

She is a sorceress and the second-in-command of the Horde, who was once a respected teacher in the magical kingdom of Mystacor and was the mentor of Micah, the future king of Bright Moon. During an accident involving dark magic, she was corrupted and transformed into a magical parasite. After this, she turned traitor and joined the Horde, eventually becoming Hordak's second-in-command. She was also the adopted mother of Adora and Catra, emotionally manipulating the former and physically and emotionally abusing the latter. After Adora defected to the Rebellion, she became bent on capturing Adora at any cost.

Her single-minded obsession with Adora led to the Horde experiencing several defeats, leading Hordak to eventually promote Catra as his new second-in-command and imprison Shadow Weaver in the Fright Zone's prisons. However, she later escaped and defected to the Rebellion.

She is voiced by Lorraine Toussaint. who also played Masago in Star Wars: Visions.

Appearance[]

Shadow Weaver's face was severely scarred as a result of her usage of the Spell of Obtainment, which is why she hid it behind a crimson mask. Her skin was dark gray, and her fingers resembled claws. They returned to regular form once she lost her powers. Her hair was long and smooth, and it flowed behind her. She wore a maroon gown with dark crimson and pink accents and a sleeve on her right arm.

As Light Spinner, her eyes were green, her complexion was light grey, her ears were pointed, and her hair was dark green. She donned a crimson wine robe and gold positioners to cover her nose and lips. Light Spinner wore two dark cerise shoulders with gold edges, a grayish red top with gold edges, and a long dark very cerise skirt with a dark cerise apron and golden edges. She also wore a gold cross-shaped emblem with a wine-colored diamond in the center, which served as her Sorcerers Guild badge.

Personality[]

Shadow Weaver is a domineering, cruel, and extremely manipulative. Even before transforming into a magic parasite, she was shown to attach herself to individuals who possessed great magical power, such as Micah, Adora, and Glimmer. She was extremely protective and affectionate of her adopted daughter Adora. At the same time, she was abusive and discouraging to her other ward, Catra. However, in Season Two, Shadow Weaver admits that the reason she was so hard on Catra is because she reminds her of herself. And at the end of the series, they forgive each other for their wrongdoings, as Shadow Weaver sacrifices herself to save Catra and Adora from the Guardian of the Ancients under Horde Prime’s control. Shadow Weaver's relationship with Catra was far darker and her dismissal of Catra was a contribution to her fall to darkness. Despite this, her last act was to save Catra from the Guardian, though not before telling Catra with her last breaths how proud she is of her, she also cares about Micah as she spared him without pragmatism and seemed genuinely touched when he said he learned from the best.

Shadow Weaver is shown at best to be delusional over. She often thinks she can do horrible things as long if it means to be for good of people she cares about (although she actually hurts them) and for herself. If shadow weaver is to be called out for her cruelty she confesses she does wrong but she's not perfect, being able to justify herself rather then to actually change herself and learn from mistakes.

Biography[]

Past[]

Decades ago, Light Spinner was a proud member of the Sorcerers Guild of Mystacor and apprentice to its leader Norwyn, as well as his would-be successor. Acting as a mentor to young sorcerers in training, Light Spinner took an interest in Micah, who proved himself to be an incredibly gifted pupil. Taking the boy under her wing, Light Spinner began to groom him as her personal apprentice, manipulating him into helping her study and practice spells and rituals kept secret by the rest of the Guild, with Light Spinner determined to "mold" Micah's power for her own designs. Preying on his desire to prove himself to her, Light Spinner shows him images of the Horde, who were in the early stages of their conquest of Etheria and confides in him her plan to convince Norwyn and the other Guild members to make themselves more powerful by casting a Spell of Obtainment.

Norwyn rejects this plan due to both the risks of using the spell (either killing its users or turning them into a magical parasite that merely feeds off of other magic to survive) as well as recognizing Light Spinners more selfish and power-hungry agenda, stating that "some power is not meant for [her]." Enraged at their rejection of her plan, she manipulates Micah into helping her perform the obtainment spell in secret during a planetary alignment. Micah, upon seeing the entity summoned by the ritual, fled from the altar in fear, leaving Light Spinner to be devoured and fused with it. Discovered by Norwyn not a moment later, Ligh Spinner, who's powers had been enhanced by the spell, defeats the sorcerers and personally murders Norwyn, absorbing his magic in the process. She then affectionately caresses Micah's head before teleporting out of Mystacor. She then goes to the Frightzone and swears allegiance to Hordak. Taking the name Shadow Weaver, she is at one point promoted to the Horde leader's second-in-command and is given control of the Black Garnet Runestone, learning how to draw power from the stone to further strengthen her powers.

One day, Shadow Weaver approaches Hordak following his return from an investigation of a portal which, unknown to either of them, had been opened by Light Hope. Shadow Weaver quickly took notice of a baby that Hordak had found at the site of the portals opening. Despite Hordak deeming her useless and ordering her to be put with the other orphans, Shadow Weaver, apparently sensing power in her, asked to be granted custody of the child, which Hordak angrily agreed to. Naming the girl Adora, Shadow Weaver stated that "[they] were going to do great things together," similar to what she had said to Micah years ago.

Shadow Weaver would spend the following years grooming Adora to be her new apprentice and pawn, at one point also taking in a young Catra following her arrival in the Frightzone. Following both girls training throughout the years and becoming a surrogate mother figure to them, Shadow Weaver would abuse them both (Catra physically and mentally, while Adora received emotional and psychological abuse) from childhood. At one point when she caught them both sneaking around in her chambers, she makes it clear while torturing Catra that she favored Adora and only tolerated Catra on account of her friendship with the former and threatened to personally kill her if she did anything that hindered Adora's training, while at the same time placing responsibility for Catra's subsequent punishment on Adora for not "keeping her under control," and telling her not to let similar situations happen in the future. As a result of Shadow Weavers abuse, Adora would develop a severe guilt-complex that caused her to feel personally responsible for bad things happening that were well beyond her control, and Catra would slowly become envious of Adora for the special treatment she apparently got from Shadow Weaver, which would have a massive impact on their relationship in the years to come.

Powers and Abilities[]

As Light Spinner, she was considered one of the most powerful sorceresses in all of Mystacor, and had the ability to create and manipulate light, hence her name. After performing the Spell of Obtainment, however, she was turned into a magical parasite, now having shadow magic. Her skills in and knowledge of magic were shown to outshine that of Castaspella, the current ruler of Mystacor. During her time in Hordak's service, Shadow Weaver had access to the Black Garnet, one of Etheria's elemental runestones. With the Garnet, she greatly enhanced her powers, which included Umbrakinesis; the ability to create and manipulate shadows and darkness. With this power, Shadow Weaver could manifest her magic as inky blackness that could conjure shadow spies and certain objects like badges. With her connection to the Black Garnet, she also had the power of Electrokinesis, which she often combined with her Umbrakinesis by shooting combined beams of shadow and electricity.

Trivia[]

  • Shadow Weaver has a "morning ritual" of enjoying tea.
  • She is an excellent gardener. Her favorite flowers are daisies; finding them cheerful.
  • The Black Garnet often fought back against her whenever Shadow Weaver went to recharge by siphoning its magic.
  • The writers stated that even though Shadow Weaver died in a heroic manner, it was still somewhat selfish, as she did not want to apologize to the people she harmed and work on herself but chose to die instead as way to atone for her sins.
