The boy took the bait. We got him back.
~ Shaman to Charro Negro

The Shaman is one of the tritagonists in the mexican movie La Leyenda de los Chaneques, and then reveals himself to be a secret antagonist at the end of the story.

He is voiced by Alejandro Villeli.

Appearance[]

He is an elderly man with a dark complexion and long white hair. His eyebrows are black, he has brown eyes and a prominent nose. In one of his ears, hangs what appears to be “leaves”. He wears an ultramarine blue poncho, plus a pale blue shirt with rolled up sleeves. He has a mustard-colored cloth belt, along with a dark gray-purple “kangaroo”. His left hand is bandaged at the wrist (possible wound). He wears light brown pants made of loose cloth and huaraches.

Personality[]

He presents himself as a wise, serious and charitable old man willing to help, declaring Leo San Juan's destiny to return to the supernatural by keeping calm in some moments although in others he ends up being harmed by the follies of Nando and Teodora.

However, he hides a malicious and cunning personality by revealing himself as a henchman of Charro Negro, being a villain in the end.

History[]

At some point in the past, he was in charge of helping the villagers with his knowledge of medicine and magic. However, he would receive a visit from the Charro Negro at an undetermined time, who would tell him that Leo San Juan would arrive soon, and would propose him to give him back his connection with the beyond in order to stalk him again. The Shaman would accept.

La Leyenda de Los Chaneques[]

Shaman in the village

He appears in the middle of the village, observing Leo's presence.

Shaman using his power

In the middle of the night, he saves Leo with his magic to prevent the Chaneques from taking him away.

Shaman arriving home

The next morning, he appears before him and tells him that he is safe in his home. He replies that the creatures he had encountered were Chaneques, or at least, they were. He says he has been where he needs to be, and that the boy's fate is not to fall into the clutches of the creatures. When he becomes anxious about Nando, he replies that he cannot go alone, stating that the jaguar may be strong, but if he is alone, he can do nothing against the herd of ocelots. Begging for his help, he tells him that he is not the one he needs, and presents him with a vision of the Ghostbusters Team. Seeing him give up on reuniting with them, he insists that there is a way to do it, and that he should do it to save his brother. After Leo accepts the offer, he tells him that the effect will be temporary, as the balance of the earth had been lost due to the Chaneques' corruption.

Shaman during the ritual

Already in the Temple of Tezcatlipoca, he says that the god can protect them and do anything as long as he is present. He adds that the energy of the temple is enigmatic, but the one that persists in the people is greater, and he places Leo a necklace with garlic for the ritual. Finally, he places the Sacred Copal to explain that as long as it is lit, his friends will remain with him. He invokes the name of Tezcatlipoca, as he begins the ritual. Before Leo's fear of his sudden vision of him being the Black Charro, he shouts at him to abandon his fears.

After having invoked Xóchitl, Teodora, Evaristo, Finado and Moribunda, he tells them that Leo has not awakened his power yet, and that they are present thanks to the copal. When they are ready to find Nando, he reminds them that only if the sacred copal allows it.

On the way, he mentions that they are following the route to the Temple of the Chaneques. He states that these lands are sacred, and that they await a sanctuary where life flourishes, but also withers. Crossing the dam, he says that in another time they could have sailed to the lagoon, but the loggers have diverted the river. Likewise, he urges everyone to go beyond that mountain.

Shaman possessed by Teodora

When they find Nando and Diego, Diego tells the young man that what good is now if you despise tomorrow. He insists to Teodora that he cannot see it, and they have a little argument about it. However, she takes over his body for a moment, although he returns to take control of his consciousness. He is hit by Nando with his cane, and confirms that he and Teodora are a match made in heaven. With nightfall approaching, he lights a fire and orders everyone to stay together.

In the middle of the night, he tells the background of the Chaneques and their relationship with humans. Upon Diego's revelation of possessing the Necta Chaneq, he asks him in horror what he has done, and that this is the source of the Chaneques' power. After hearing the boy's story, he replies that he must be returned to the place where he belongs.

Shaman surrounded by Chaneques

He can sense the presence of the Chaneques near where they are, so he advises everyone to be vigilant. Even so, he learns that they are after them, and forms a path to give to his temple, shouting for them to return the statuette now, while he stays to distract the creatures with his magic.

He reappears when the Giant Chaneque emerges, watching it move through the jungle. He again summons Tezcatlipoca to release the absolute power of his pyramid.

Shaman invoking an unknown spirit

After he is defeated, he affirms that Leo and his friends have great strength when they are united. He proposes that this is his chance to regain his powers. When the boy accepts, he passes Tezcatlipoca's power to him.

Shaman in front of Charro Negro

In the post-credits scene, he appears in his home doing another summoning ritual, in which he bows, then says that Leo had taken the bait, so he was back. The one he commented this to, was the Charro Negro, revealing himself as a covert ally in his service.
