The Shamatari Tribe are an indigenous tribe native to the Amazonian jungle who appear in the infamous 1980 Italian film Cannibal Holocaust. They are a cannibal tribe at war with the Ya̧nomamö Tribe (the titular cannibals) and the only tribe not to encounter Alan's crew.
Biography[]
Very little is known about the Shamatari Tribe due to their appearances in the film being limited to a single scene. One of the few things that is known about them is that similar to the other tribes depicted in the film they practice cannibalism. They live near to the Amazon River; hence they are known as the River Tribe.
The Shamatari are known to be at war with the Ya̧nomamö, another cannibal tribe. The cause of the war is unknown but is most likely territorial.
In their only appearance in the film, the Shamatari attack and set fire to a Ya̧nomamö-controlled area of the jungle and capture several Ya̧nomamö women. They then proceed to kill and rape the women until Ya̧nomamö warriors arrive to drive them away. Professor Harold Monroe and his guide Chaco proceed to open fire on the Shamatari and kill several of them. Defeated, the Shamatari retreat.
