Shane Langston is the main antagonist of season 2 of the Amazon Prime series Reacher. He is the sadistic and corrupt Director of Security for New Age Technologies.
He was portrayed by Robert Patrick, who also played the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Mr. Lisp in Spy Kids, Ray Schenkel in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Phil Billings in Ben 10, Rome in The Marine, Colonel Merton Bell in NCIS, The Skiptracer in Identity Thief, and White Dragon in Peacemaker.
Biography[]
Shane Langston is a retired NYPD detective who went on to become the Head of Security of the defense contracting company, New Age Technologies. Langston discovers the Little Wing Project authorized Malcom Lavoy, this being a specialized air missile which is designed to defeat all of anti-missile defenses in order to strike down its intended target. Taking in interest in Little Wing, Langston plots with his division to steal some of the missiles and sell it to the highest bidder. To do this, he allies himself with terrorist arms broker A.M. to sell it through him.
Member of the 110 Unit, Tony Swan, is employed with the company by Marlo Burns to investigate the corruption. Swan Langston's corrupt plan, so he gets his fellow soldiers, Calvin Franz, Manuel Orozco, and Jorge Sanchez to help him with the the investigation. When Langston learns of this, he has Swan, Franz, Orozco, and Sanchez abducted and tortured. Langston imprisons Franz, Orozco, and Sanchez and breaks their legs, before strapping them to to gurneys and having each of them dropped out of a helicopter over the Catskill Mountains. He dismembers Swan and keeps his eye and thumbs to bypass the New Age's biometrics security and to frame Swan for the plot. Langston threatens life of Marlo Burns and her daughter to keep Burns compliant.
When Langston learns about Jack Reacher, Francis Neagley, David O'Donnell, and Karla Dixon, surviving members of the 110th Unit who know of Franz's murder, he fears that they will come after him, too, and attempt to disrupt his plot, so he plans to go after them as well. He sends criminal, Trevor Saropian to keep track of Reacher and his crew, leading to a fight between Reacher, his team, Saropian, and Saropian's men. Reacher and his teammates kill Saropian and his crew. Reacher picks up Saropian's cellphone to talk to Langston. Langston threatens Reacher, who points out to him that he's the one who is scared.
A.M. stays on the move and remains in contact with Langston, killing numerous people on his mission. Reacher and his crew continue to investigate Langston, who hires a biker crew to kill them. The bikers attack Reacher and his team, who dispatch them and continue with their investigation. Marlo Burns, who has teamed up with Reacher, calls up Langston to plan a meeting, Langston unaware that Burns is working with Reacher. Langston goes to the location with his men where Reacher and his team are waiting to attack. The group ambushes Langston and his men and they engage in a shootout, however, Langston calls his helicopter to picks him up, which he is able to escape in.
Reacher and his team continue their hunt for Langston, however, Langston ends up capturing O'Donnell and Dixon and imprisoning them in his business facility, planning to kill them. Reacher and Neagley track them to the facility, where Reacher is taken prisoner by Langston and his men, Langston having O'Donnell and Dixon strapped to gurneys. As part of the plan, Reacher pretends that Neagley had been killed. However, when Langston learns she is not dead, he interrogates Reacher and shoots O'Donnell in the leg, ordering the bullet to be extracted so nothing can be traced back to him. He repeatedly punches Reacher, trying to get information out of him. When Reacher asks about Swan’s location, wondering about his role in the plot which Langston framed him to be a part of and refusing to believe he was involved, Langston taunts Reacher by showing him Swan’s dismembered remains. He has O'Donnell and Dixon loaded onto to the helicopter.
Neagley arrives along with Lavoy's security, causing a distraction which allows Reacher to get free. He and his allies kill most of Langston's men while Langston gets on the helicopter where O'Donnell and Dixon are both strapped to gurneys. Reacher makes it onto the helicopter which takes off. Langston orders his henchman, Parker to open the door and throw Dixon out of the helicopter to her death. Reacher gets inside and attacks Langston and his henchman, Parker. Dixon almost falls out of the helicopter but Reacher grabs onto her, holding onto the gurney she is strapped to with one hand and onto the helicopter with his other hand. Langston angrily kicks Reacher, trying to make him let go. Langston orders Parker to kill them, Parker stabbing Reacher and trying to make him let Dixon fall to her death. Dixon gets free and stabs Dixon with the knife he stabbed into Reacher, before taking control of the helicopter. Reacher confronts Langston and punches him down. Langston pleads for his life and offers Reacher information, but Reacher throws him out of the helicopter to his death, avenging his friends. Langston lands on a rock which shatters his spine.
Personality[]
Langston is an incredibly cruel, sadistic, conniving, greedy, and violent individual, brutally torturing killing multiple people without remorse and he is willing selling a deadly weapon to terrorists, no matter how much death he will cause. He threatens Marlo and her child and sadistically taunts Reacher with the dismembered remains of his friends before attempting to kill him, further showing what an evil sadist he truly is. In the end, he reveals himself to be a coward at heart as when he is losing and his life is threatened, he resorts to fearfully begging for his life.
