Shane: After I've wined you and dined you and asked you to marry me, and then made you the center of my life, it's just nice to know you're not pissed.
Rachel: Shane, this is about me. I'm not okay with being a trophy wife, an appendage like all these other women in your world.
~ Shane and Rachel arguing about their marriage.

Physical appearance[]

Shane is a tall, muscular Caucasian man. He normally wears plain clothing, and a red cap.

Personality[]

Shane has a dismissive and outdated view of the role of women in marriage, expecting them to serve him to appease his wants. This attitude is reinforced by the relationship with his mother, whom he has a strange relationship. It is clear that his mother depends on Shane to validate her narcissism, which has resulted in a diminutive view of women. He is suggested to have been a womaniser, and has an extremely short fuse with hospitality staff, whom he behaves entitled toward.

Biography[]

Background[]

Shane is the son of Kitty Patton. In his youth, Kitty doted on Shane and enabled his poor behaviour by leading him to believe any wife he would have would be there to serve him and be his trophy wife. Shane had a string of flings with women, and eventually met Rachel. The pair married, which was heavily interfered with by Kitty. The pair booked to go to Sicily for their honeymoon.

The White Lotus[]

Shane and his wife Rachel arrive at The White Lotus, where they are informed by Armond that their room is unavailable. Shane becomes quickly enraged by this and takes it personally, he demands to speak with Armond's manager and is given a fake number. Shane spends his honeymoon speaking of himself and shows a shallow view of his marriage with Rachel.

Throughout the honeymoon, Rachel becomes growingly doubtful of her marriage but remains positive. Shane's mother, Kitty, surprises them on their honeymoon, which Shane is delighted over, but Rachel is unimpressed. Shane then ignores his wife to speak with his mother. Rachel notices the pair's shallow behaviours, entitlement and lack of empathy via their privilege.

After Rachel talks with Kitty, she learns that Shane is only going to view her as a housewife resultant from his childhood with Kitty and their existing relationship. Shane later witnesses Armond sleeping with an employee when he goes to confront him on the false number. He then makes veiled threats to Armond, making it clear he is aware of what he saw. Rachel tearfully tells Shane she fears she has made a mistake in marrying him and leaves him, which Shane fails to realise being more interested in his book.

Rachel returns that evening and reiterates that she is still doubtful over their marriage. The pair argue, where Rachel tells Shane he has a reductive view of her which she resents, and feels unseen. She criticises his relationship with his mother and leaves him, furious. Shane returns to his flat and learns that Rachel has booked another room. Shane also sees that Armond has defecated in his luggage as revenge for his treatment of him. Shane then hears Armond's movements in his room, and arms himself with a knife he prepared for self-defence after the Mossbachers are robbed.

Creeping around a corner, Shane stabs Armond who is behind the wall. Shane drops the knife and leaves Armond to bleed out and die. Shane denies any involvement in his death and leaves Hawaii. He encounters Rachel at the airport, where Rachel falls back to Shane, and the pair resume their relationship.
