| ~ Shane's mental breakdown, moments before his death. |
Shane Walsh is a minor antagonist in Image Comics' The Walking Dead.
He was Rick Grimes' partner in the Cynthiana Police Department, who looks after Rick's family in his absence, but in the process, had an affair with his wife, Lori, following the zombie apocalypse. Once Rick returns to his family, envy grows within Shane, turning him into a spiteful egotist who wishes to take Rick's family away from him.
In the official motion comic, he was voiced by Phil LaMarr.
Story[]
Pre-apocalypse[]
Before the outbreak, Shane and Rick were caught in a firefight with an escaped convict, discussing how to handle the situation. Rick got shot, ending up in a coma, while Shane dealt with the convict.
Post-apocalypse[]
When the dead started rising and the government ordered people into cities, Shane took Rick's wife, Lori, and her son, Carl, to Atlanta for safety. He played a crucial role in getting them there.
As they approached Atlanta, Lori felt down about Rick's presumed death and leaving him at the hospital. Shane comforted her, and their bond grew stronger. They had an intimate night on the way to Atlanta, fulfilling Shane's long-standing desire. Shane assumed they were now in a relationship and asked Lori if she'd tell Rick about it. Lori, unsure, admitted she didn't know. Unbeknownst to them, Shane had impregnated Lori, revealed when she became pregnant after Rick's return.
Unable to enter zombie-infested Atlanta, they settled on its outskirts and joined Dale's survivor group. Shane, seen as an authority, became the group's unofficial leader, preaching that the government would save them.
Volume 1: Days Gone Bye[]
When Rick finally joins the group, Shane is initially overzealous about finding out his best friend is still alive. But things quickly change when Lori ends her relationship with Shane due to Rick, her husband, now being back in the picture. Shane pretends to be okay with it, but he starts feeling jealous and obsesses over Lori. Lori talks to him, wanting him to stop his fixation on her, which he misunderstands as talking about their relationship. He tries to bring up an intimate moment they had on the highway, but Lori stops him, saying it was a mistake. This hurts him, and his obsession with Lori messes with his head. This leads to a fight with Rick about whether the group should stay at camp or move elsewhere.
Rick wants to move the camp to a safer place, but Shane insists that the army will come to rescue them. This causes a conflict between Rick and Shane. Lori takes Rick's side after a brief fight, and she calls Shane crazy. Seeing Lori stand by Rick's side and the shock from the others make Shane lose it. He runs into the woods with Rick chasing him. Shane stops and aims a gun at Rick, yelling about how he thought Lori would come back to him and how Rick should have stayed dead. Suddenly, Carl, Rick's son, shoots Shane in the neck to protect his dad.
Volume 2: Miles Behind Us[]
In a flashback, Shane consoles Lori upon seeing the destruction of Atlanta, and they have sex in the grass. In the present, the group lays Shane to rest outside the camp, placing his Police hat on the cross. Fueled by anger at his behavior, Lori spits on Shane's grave, while Rick mourns the tragic transformation of his once-close friend into madness. Rick confides in Allen, expressing concern that if the world's current state could bring about such a profound change in Shane, then they are facing even greater challenges than they had realized.
Volume 3: Safety Behind Bars[]
Upon discovering the truth that everyone is infected, Rick returns to the spot where he had previously buried Shane. He exhumes Shane's body, now reanimated, and dispatches him with a gunshot to the head. As he stands over the reanimated corpse, Rick communicates his resolve not to bury Shane again before walking away.
