Shane Wyland is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Into the Woods". He is a pedophile and serial killer who preys on young boys.
He was portrayed by Gill Gayle.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Wyland was convicted of raping a 10-year-old boy in 1994, a crime for which he spent six years in prison. After he was released, he moved into a motel that housed several other sex offenders. In 2001, he jumped his parole and started hiking along the Appalachian Trail, living in an abandoned mine. He would stalk families with children who were camping in the area, kidnap the male children, sexually abuse them, and then murder them. By the time of the episode, he has raped and murdered 12 boys.
Wyland has ties to another child molester, Brandon Stiles, who is also a drug dealer. When Wyland develops a degenerative disease that causes chronic leg pain, he becomes addicted to painkillers supplied by Stiles.
"Into the Woods"[]
Wyland kidnaps 10-year-old Robert Brooks and his eight-year-old sister Ana from their family's campsite, and then locks them up in a makeshift cell in his cave. He rapes Robert, who afterward makes a plan with Ana for her to escape when Wyland comes back for him. Sure enough, when Wyland approaches them the next day, Ana kicks him in his bad leg and escapes, and is eventually found by agents of the FBI's Behavior Analysis Unit (BAU), who have been called in to help find the children.
BAU Agents David Rossi and Emily Prentiss question Ana about the man who kidnapped her and Robert, and she tells them of Wyland's limp. Technical analyst Penelope Garcia searches prison databases for child sex offenders with degenerative diseases and finds out about Wyland's history. The BAU then go to Wyland's last known address, the hotel.
Meanwhile, Wyland takes Robert to the hotel, planning to sell him to Stiles in return for painkillers. Stiles does not want to deal to Wyland at first because he stole pills from him years earlier, but he changes his mind when he sees Robert. Wyland leaves them alone, promising to come back in an hour. He sees the BAU surrounding the hotel, however, and disappears into the crowd. Prentiss and fellow BAU Agent Derek Morgan rescue Robert and arrest Stiles, but Wyland is long gone. He is last seen hitching a ride, and then walking off into the wilderness once again.
Despite Wyland remaining at large, it should be noted that he had a disease and the fact that he no longer has access to the drugs that he needs for his leg, it is possible that he has died in the mountains at some point in the future.
"Keeper"[]
Wyland was mentioned when another serial killer in the Appalachian Mountains, Cormac Burton, was discovered from Burton's burial site being found, with a dozen adult victims inside. Wyland was originally suspected to have returned, but because of the obviously different choices of victims, he was quickly ruled out.

Trivia[]
- Wyland is inspired by multiple real-life criminals:
- Gary Hilton, a.k.a. "The Appalachian Trail Killer", a serial killer of hikers in the namesake East Coast trail, who were all found reduced to skeletons across the transnational forests.
- John Wayne Gacy, a.k.a. "The Killer Clown", a serial killer/rapist of dozens of boys with a preceding record for child sodomy, a history of criminal accomplices, and numerious burial sites in isolated nature.
- Dean Corll, a.k.a. "The Candy Man", a serial killer/rapist of boys with a previous history of rape, including his teenage accomplice, with a long history of murders and affiliations to figures in child sexual abuse and sex trafficking cultures, such as John David Norman and Philip Paske. Corll's spree ended when he tried to kill a brother and sister, only for another accomplice to shoot him.
- David Meirhofer, a serial killer, most of children, guilty of the kidnapping of Susan Jaeger from her family's camp site before murdering her. Meirhofer was one of the FBI's earliest offender profiling cases.
- Andrei Chikatilo, a.k.a. “The Rostov Ripper”, a Russian serial killer of women and children responsible for dozens of murders across the Soviet Union, as the Communist Party regarded him more as lore and ghost tales than a serial killer.
- Pedro López, a Colombian serial killer of girls across Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador ranging in hundreds of murders, later being released from prison and escaping on a technicality before disappearing.
- Joseph Duncan III, a serial rapist of children, specifically boys, later escalating to serial murder and kidnapping a brother and sister.
- Nikolai Dzhumagaliev, a.k.a. "Metal Fang", a Soviet serial killer/rapist and cannibal who escaped repeatedly into the mountains, his crimes being confused with those of fellow serial killer Alexander Skrynnik while he was on the run.
- Sidney Cooke, a.k.a. "Hissing Sid", a British serial killer/rapist of boys leading a group of murderous pedophiles, suspected of more rapes and murders than confirmed, and even knew fellow serial child killer Ronald Jebson, one of four "Babes in the Woods" murderers.
- Wyland is the first UnSub to not only have successfully evaded the BAU, but also remained at large in his final appearance. He is also one of the only five criminals in Criminal Minds that remain currently at large, alongside Skull Tattoo Man, Darlene Beckett, the Woodsman Killer and Taras Yudin.
