Villain Overview

Your soul is mine!
~ Shang Tsung's most famous quote.
You participate in the most important Mortal Kombat in history. This tournament, the tenth after nine Outworld victories, will determine Earthrealm's fate. If you defeat all of your opponents, you will face one final challenge... me.
~ Shang Tsung speaking at the beginning of the first Mortal Kombat tournament.
After losing control of the Shaolin tournament, Tsung promises his ruler Shao Kahn to shape events that will lure the Earth warriors to compete in his own contest. Convinced of this plan, Shao Kahn restores Tsung's youth and allows him to live.
~ Shang Tsung's fighter description in Mortal Kombat II.

Shang Tsung is one of the main antagonists of the Mortal Kombat franchise. He is a powerful, manipulative sorcerer, virtually unmatched in his mastery of sorcery, and a shapeshifter who consumes souls in order to sustain himself.

He often serves as Shao Kahn's right-hand, but with a traitorous ambition, preferring to plan behind others' back instead of direct conflict. Nonetheless, he remains one of the most powerful kombatants of the franchise and is the eternal archenemy of Liu Kang.

In Liu Kang's New Era, Shang Tsung was an Outworld-born con artist who grew up poor, but an encounter with "Damashi" led him to become a sorcerer like his previous selves. He was unaware that Damashi's true identity was Titan Shang Tsung, who had fought Liu Kang for the Hourglass and became Keeper of Time in his branched timeline.

Portrayers[]

Shang Tsung was portrayed by Ho Sung Pak, Phillip Ahn, M.D., John Turk and Richard Divizio in Mortal Kombat-3 and Mythologies: Sub-Zero respectively. He was voiced by Max Crawford in Deception, Shaolin Monks and Armageddon. He was voiced by James Kyson-Lee in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe and by Andrew Kishino in Mortal Kombat 9.

Shang Tsung was portrayed by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa in Mortal Kombat 11, who previously played his 1995 movie counterpart. He is currently voiced by Alan Lee in Mortal Kombat 1.

Appearance[]

Shang Tsung initially had the appearance of an old man. His skin was pale with long, balding white hair, a beard and mustache, with thin fingers and long fingernails. He wore robes with shades of blue and yellow and had a sword holstered at his side at all times.

Since Mortal Kombat II, however, after being given a second chance by Shao Khan he gives Shang Tsung his youth. His skin returns to a natural tint and is depicted with long black hair. As with his older persona, he shares white eyes. In both Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat 3, he wore yellow and black clothes. In Deadly Alliance and beyond, he wears a heavy red uniform. he is also depicted with pupils, having brown eyes.

In Mortal Kombat 11, he once again appears in his older and younger forms, with his older appearance being a slight redesign as his one in the reboot and his younger form being based directly off of his physical appearance in the 1995 live-action movie, sporting a near-identical hairstyle and a complete lack of facial hair. One of his alternate costumes also grants him his look from the aforementioned movies. Interestingly, his old form's eyes have visible pupils rather than being pure white.

Shang Tsung appears as a much younger man in Mortal Kombat 1 with his hair initially tied up. He takes on an older appearance with a wig and facial prosthetics to persuade unassuming customers into purchasing his quack wares. After learning the ability to shapeshift from Reptile, he is able to change his appearance between his natural young self and his old persona on the fly. His Titan counterpart wears the same outfit he wore in his ending from Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath; black and red robes with a gold dragon motif draped on it.

Personality[]

Shang Tsung is infamous for his sadism and greed. Even before joining Shao Kahn, he was a heartless sorcerer who gleefully took advantage of his punishment after the Elder Gods cursed him to die unless he consumed the souls of those he defeats or souls he decided to consume for fun.

Using his polite façade as a means of tricking opponents, Shang shows he is willing to do anything that will help him gain more power. He can also be highly condescending, often looking down on his opponents while pretending to be affable towards them. All of this proves that he is nothing more than a heartless coward who would do anything to ensure his survival.

During the events of Mortal Kombat 11, Shang Tsung despite helping the heroes against Kronika, shows how treacherous he can be after he betrays them and later Shao Kahn and Sindel even Raiden called Shang Tsung a snake. Furthermore, although he remains as pragmatic as ever, he barely even tries to hide his true intentions nor convince his allies that he is not using them as if mocking them for even considering teaming up with him to stop Kronika's forces.

Mortal Kombat 1 showed that he cannot even be satisfied/satiated by being supreme god/Titan of existence. Simply learning that there was a multiverse sprung from fighting over Kronika's hourglass inspired him to undergo a pointless plan to conquer other timelines and merge them into his own; ironically mirroring Shao's own pointless conquest.

Powers and Abilities[]

Shang Tsung has the power to steal the souls of those he defeats and must do so to continue living. He can shapeshift into the people whose souls he steals, giving him their combat abilities and memories. However, he can shapeshift into someone without their soul. Shang is highly skilled in black magic and sorcery, and his attacks are mainly fire-based, much like his archenemy Liu Kang. Like with most other kombatants, he also has superhuman strength, speed, and endurance with him becoming more powerful after each soul consumed. When transformed into someone else, he also gains their abilities. Even without transforming, however, he is powerful enough to stand up to the likes of Liu Kang even in his elderly form.

He mainly got these powers from Shao Kahn, but in later games, this was no longer the case. Shang Tsung can fire flaming skull projectiles, which can also be summoned from the ground, that are believed to be the souls he has collected. He can create a giant flaming cobra, though he only used this ability in the opening of Mortal Kombat: Deception, which is a reference to his Animality in Mortal Kombat 3. Shang can also create portals between realms and teleport in bursts of fire. Furthermore, he can also engulf his hands with fire to increase the power of his attacks as shown in Mortal Kombat 11.

Once Shang Tsung took Kronika's crown his power increased exponentially. With the crown, he could easily defeat the likes of Raiden, Shao Kahn, Sindel and even Kronika without much issue. The only one who could match or even surpass him was Fire God Liu Kang.

In the New Era, Shang Tsung is a proficient alchemist, possibly stemming from his life as a con man selling fake potions. He is able to synthesize a serum to treat Mileena's Tarkat affliction, earning him the trust of the royal house. He can also infuse sorcery into his cocktails to create weapons he can use in kombat.

Powers[]

  • Divine Curse/Empowerment: According to the first Mortal Kombat comic, Shang Tsung was cursed by his gods to age rapidly and die prematurely. In the games from the Original Timeline leading up to the end of the Alternate Timeline, Kronika was the one who gifted him power of the most vile magic and gained a lot more powerful from Shao Kahn. In the New Era, Liu Kang forged his destiny to be an Outworlder, until he was met by the Alternate Timeline Shang Tsung disguised as a woman who granted him impressive power. When Shang Tsung has become a Titan, all of his powers have become formidable than before, and he has become far more powerful than all of the Elder Gods combined.
    • Superhuman Strength: Despite being old or young, Shang Tsung does possess incredible strength to defeat beings who look twice as powerful than him.
    • Superhuman Speed: Shang Tsung is fast enough to take on assassins, ninjas, and others who possess such impressive speed.
    • Superhuman Stamina: His stamina is so high that he can still keep fighting for minutes or hours without showing signs of exhaustion.
    • Superhuman Durability: Shang Tsung is also very durable to keep on fighting despite receiving powerful blows from beings like Raiden and Shao Kahn.
    • Superhuman Endurance: Shang Tsung can endure even the strongest of attacks.
    • Superhuman Senses: Shang Tsung does have incredible senses. He can notice Johnny Cage secretly mocking him during the start of the first Mortal Kombat Tournament in the 2011 video game. He can also notice Kronika starting to appear in the MK11 Aftermath story mode.
      • Cosmic Awareness
    • Invulnerability: Mostly his invulnerability is shown when he is a Titan. He can take nearly powerful blows from beings who can break mountains and can still survive and fight.
  • Sorcery: Shang Tsung was gifted sorcery by Kronika and gained more magic from Shao Kahn. He possesses many abilities.
    • Fire Manipulation: Similar to Liu Kang, Shang Tsung can unleash fire balls in the shape of a skull.
    • Soul Manipulation: Shang Tsung can do many things with soul magic.
      • Soul Blasts: Shang Tsung can fire blasts of green soul magic at his opponents.
      • Soul Steal: He can steal the souls of warriors until they all turn into empty husks.
      • Soul Empowerment: When in possession of the Soul Crown in MK11 Aftermath, his power has increased exponentially until it was proven unmatched. With this increase in power, all of his superhuman characteristics and his sorcery were so powerful that he was able to overwhelm powerful beings like Raiden, Fujin, Shao Kahn, Sindel, Kronika, and even Liu Kang as a fire god.
    • Shapeshifting: Shang Tsung can also morph into any character by stealing their souls, but he does not really need to steal their souls to shapeshift into them.
      • Power Mimicry: When he shapeshifts into any character, he gains all of their powers, abilities, and fighting prowess. He can gain telekinesis from Ermac, telepathy from Kenshi, and any other special ability from anyone.
    • Summoning: Shang Tsung can summon demons to hold a grip on his opponents.
    • Necromancy: Shang Tsung also has the ability to resurrect beings from the dead like Kintaro.
    • Portal Creation: Shang Tsung can use his sorcery to make portals to travel anywhere. He summoned portals to lead Liu kang to Goro's Lair, the Tarkatans to raid the Wu Shi Academy, and send Geras to Chaosrealm.
      • Dimensional Travel
    • Mind Control: Not much is known, but Kotal Kahn mentioned that he can also take control of anyone's mind.
    • Teleportation: Shang Tsung can also teleport and can switch sides with his opponent.
  • Time Manipulation: Granting power from the Hourglass and becoming Keeper of Time, Shang Tsung can create new timelines and even erase beings from existence.
  • Flight: Shang Tsung also has the ability to fly.
  • Longevity/Immortality: Shang Tsung has confirmed that he has lived for over millennia, though he needed souls to survive since being cursed. In the New Era, Shang Tsung doesn't need souls to survive because he is an Outworlder. Outworlders live much longer than humans.

Breath deeply in your final moments, Chosen One. For now your existence ends in shame! All the power that was once yours is mine... Forever.
~ Titan Shang Tsung's last words to Liu Kang before killing him.
Kronika's power overwhelmed me, such that I would have been driven mad...had I not spent centuries mastering the dark powers beyond the grasp of ordinary mortals. Now I am the master of time and fate. But Kronika's fall proves that even Titans can be defeated. Though my new power lets me roam infinite timelines and feast upon the souls of billions, I am vulnerable. To survive, I must return to the shadows, avoid confrontation, and work my will through the hands of others...more specifically, through the hands of my fellow Titans. These monstrous beings are plied easily by appealing to their greed, vanity, and fear. Through them, every soul in eternity bends to my influence. In my New Era, morality will be exposed as the illusion it is. The cunning will prosper while the "good" suffer. This is the word of Shang Tsung. Have a nice day.
~ Shang Tsung's MK11 ending
Now magic this potent is expensive. And I am sure you're asking yourselves: can I afford it? But the true question you must ask is: can I afford to be without it?

You were pawns. Not partners.

Behold, Liu Kang, the hell I unleash upon you!
