Sharon Fishman is the main antagonist of the 2021 action-comedy film Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar. She is an eccentric supervillain, plotting to kill everyone in Vista Del Mar via the use of genetically enhanced mosquitoes.
She was portrayed by Kristen Wiig, who also played Star in the same film, Katinka Ingaborgovinananananana (disguised as Alexanya Atoz) in Zoolander 2, Herald in mother!, and Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984, and voiced Mrs. Hattie in Despicable Me, Madame Hagfish in SpongeBob SquarePants, and a disguised Balthazar Bratt in Despicable Me 3.
Biography[]
Sharon's brief backstory revealed how she was bullied as a child by the other residents of Vista Del Mar on account of her pale skin and extreme sensitivity to the sun. As an adult, she becomes a highly wealthy criminal, who enacts an elaborate scheme to kill the residents of Vista Del Mar. When her chief scientist expresses discontent with the plan, Sharon locks him in a room with the mosquitoes, leading to his horrific death.
She tasks her henchman (and lover), Edgar, with going to Vista Del Mar to plant a homing beacon that will attract the mosquitos once they are ready to be released. She falsely promises Edgar that if he succeeds, she will officially become his girlfriend.
At the hotel, Edgar encounters goofball Midwestern tourists, Barb and Star (the film's titular protagonists). During a party, Edgar loses the microchip needed to activate the beacon, driving Sharon into a rage. She sends another one of her henchmen, Darlie, to supply Edgar with another microchip and spy on him, as well as Barb and Star, who have developed romantic interest in Edgar, who begins to have rendezvous with the pair.
On the day of the annual Seafood Jam, Barb spots Star and Edgar having sex in the latter's hotel room. She goes to confront Edgar for stringing her along, only overhear him discussing the plan with Sharon. Barb informs Star, who doesn't believe her, causing a rift between the friends. Sharon uses photos taken by Darlie to fool Edgar into believing Barb and Star are secret agents and that Star was tricking him. She orders him to kill them. Edgar, having formed genuine bonds with the pair, cannot bring himself to take their lives, instead leaving them locked in a hotel room where they will be safe from the mosquitoes. They escape, but are confronted by Sharon, who forces them off a cliff, and leaves to go ensure her plan succeeds. The duo survive, and reconcile their friendship, before going to foil Sharon and save the town.
Edgar realizes that Sharon lied to him about Barb and Star, and planned for him to die, having never loved him. He regroups with Star and Barb and helps them locate the homing beacon. Edgar engages Darlie in a fight, while Star and Barb escape with the beacon, taking a jet ski out to sea to draw the mosquitoes away and save the town.
Sharon launches herself out of a cannon to reach them, and seizes the beacon. However, the mosquitoes immediately swarm her, seemingly killing her. Barb and Star are brought back to shore by Trish, a sea ghost initially believed to an urban legend. Sharon arrives on shore, having survived the mosquitos but severely exhausted. With Sharon's plan foiled and her true nature revealed, Star recognizes that her actions stem from her bullied childhood, and having never experienced true friendship. She extends an offer of friendship to Sharon, who accepts and drops her frosty exterior, marking her redemption.
