I am the keeper of the talismans. I am the apocalypse of which legend speaks. And I am, for once and for all, your executioner.
~ Shendu to Jackie Chan in their first battle.

Shendu is the main antagonist of the cartoon series Jackie Chan Adventures.

Shendu is a giant dragon demon and sorcerer who wants to restore his power and rule the world, as well as Jackie Chan's archenemy. He is very treacherous, manipulative and knowledgeable, thinking things through before making any mistakes (most of the time). He is also extremely bloodthirsty, sadistic and evil. However, he does seem to respect his mortal enemy Jackie Chan of his martial art skills, admitting of the threat it serves to him and wanting Jackie as his preferred host as opposed to Valmont.

He was voiced by James Sie, who also voiced Jackie Chan himself, and Chaghaita Khan in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

History[]

I am no statue! You stand in the presence of a Demon Sorcerer. I once held dominion over a vast empire, but my subjects betrayed me. They cast a chi spell, which imprisoned me in this pitiful icon, where I have remained for nine hundred years. The twelve magic Talismans, from which I drew my power, were scattered to the winds. Acquisition of all the Talismans will allow me to be free of my confinement, and walk the Earth once again.
~ Shendu explains his history to Valmont and his lackeys.

Once in time, Shendu and his demon brothers and sisters ruled the ancient world, with the humans as their slaves. However, they were banished to the netherworld by powerful warriors known as the Eight Immortals, who used the sacred relics and the Pan-Ku Box to seal them. Shendu escaped his imprisonment, continuing to rule China for centuries, until one of his servants, a defiant chi wizard by the name Lo Pei, used a powerful form of sorcery known as Scroll Magic that trapped him in a statue form, dividing all of his powers in 12 talismans representing the animals of the Chinese Zodiac and scattering them all throughout the world, so nobody would ever reunite them.

During his time imprisoned, Shendu attempted to deceive humans to find his talismans for him. There was a short period where Shendu was in a mining tunnel, and had a group of bandits try to get his talismans for him. They hired a bumbling sheriff who managed to save the town regardless, leaving Shendu in his statue form. Ages passed and technology advanced, with Shendu waiting for the opportunity to rise once again. One day, Shendu was found by a criminal known as Valmont, leader of the Dark Hand, a powerful crime organization. Shendu then deceived Valmont into finding his talismans, in exchange for his fortune, which was buried in his palace. But Valmont was being followed by Captain Augustus Black, commander of the Section 13, a ramification of a secret agency that hunted down criminals all around the world.

Jackie Chan, an archaeologist, accidentally found the rooster talisman in one of his explorations, and soon was put into the middle of a quest to find all of the talismans before the Dark Hand. Jackie got most of them, but once he found the tiger talisman, his soul was split into two: the good and the evil part. His evil half was convinced by the Dark Hand to bring all talismans in exchange for money. He agreed, and all talismans were reunited, making Shendu once again walk the earth. Shendu discards Valmond and travels to his palace, where he prepared to rise his army of dragons and conquer the world once again, but Jackie stopped him using a spell made by Uncle Chan, his uncle who owned a antiques shop and was a wizard. His niece Jade, however, used the dragon talisman to destroy Shendu's body, which set Shendu's soul free. Shendu got to the netherworld, where his brothers and sisters were not happy with him, obligating him to free them all.

Shendu then tried to possess Jackie's body, but ended possessing Valmont instead, stealing the Pan'ku box and opening all the portals of the demons, but Jackie managed to stop him by sealing the demon portals once again. Shendu later managed to possess Jackie, then used the Book of Ages, a magical book where all history was recorded, to change history and make him and his brothers and sisters to rule the world once again. Jade managed to retain her memories and convinced Jackie, who was turned into Shendu's servant, to help her restore the world. Shendu was once again defeated.

Later in the series, Jackie accidentally destroyed the talismans during a battle against Daolon Wong, an evil sorcerer who tried to get the talismans' power, making all of the powers scatter through the world, and thus starting a quest to retrieve the talismans powers, which entered the bodies of the sacred animals's descendants who once possessed these powers. Since there was no dragon in the world anymore (as Shendu himself was the last of them) Daolon Wong made a pact with Shendu to resurrect him again in order to get the dragon power. However, Shendu betrayed Wong and obtained all of his powers again. Luckily, Uncle Chan used the spell to turn him back into a statue and restored the talismans, which were then secured on Section 13's vault, as well as Shendu's statue.

When Drago absorbed all the demon chi, Uncle freed Shendu to fight Drago. Shendu did so poorly until the J-team threw the talismans at him, at which point Uncle and Tohru banished both of them, the talismans, and the demon chi to the netherworld forever.

Personality[]

Like the rest of his demonic family, Shendu's greatest desire is for ultimate strength and world conquest. Although his lust for power seems to go beyond that of his siblings (who are willing or forced to "share" the ancient world with each other, while Shendu desires total control Kingdom). In addition, other characteristics of Shendu are short temper, desire for revenge, cunning and treachery. He is sophisticated and regal in addition to possessing a witty sense of humour like most of his siblings, and seems to enjoy speaking with a somewhat poetic and eloquent vocabulary.

Shendu is vulnerable to keeping grudges toward the ones who have crossed him in the past; this is validated by his vow to destroy all of Asia as revenge on his former subjects for overthrowing him and imprisoning him in his statue form, a vow of revenge which he to begin with supposed to uphold even if the ones who'd rebelled towards him had been lengthy dead (after 9 hundred years of tortuous imprisonment in his motionless statue form). Shendu holds an excessive contention with Jackie Chan, whom he outright deemed his arch-nemesis, and reputedly considers Jackie a worthy opponent to the factor of believing Jackie becomes the maximum-ideal human host for him to own to attain his desires while decreased to a spirit. Shendu extends this animosity to the relaxation of the Chan own circle of relatives to a lesser extent - curiously, his hatred for Jade Chan appears to be milder than his hatred for Jackie, regardless of her direct position in his loss of life which left him at his siblings' mercy, and regardless of her important position in his and his siblings' maximum intense downfall (while she escaped the Book of Ages' alteration, and enabled the Chan Clan and the J-Team to restore reality). Shendu additionally held a grudge toward Drago for betraying him or even agreed to a truce with Uncle in alternate for his freedom so he ought to make Drago pay for his deceit.

Despite his anger, Shendu often relies on intimidation, even abuse, to keep his minions (especially the Enforcers) in the ranks; often snaps at them or threatens them when they make him nervous or act, and clearly cared nothing for them or that of his other human servants other than keeping them in line out of fear. Afterwards, the Enforcers were overjoyed to be freed from Shendu, and were simply terrified of his return as a spirit. Shendu clearly understands Hak Foo despite the latter's evil warrior code, though he still treats "thugs" like Finn, Chow, and Ratso roughly. When dealing with potentially smarter and more valuable allies like Valmont, Daolon Wong, and Uncle, Shendu instead uses bribes and promises of rewards to force them into service, though he rarely honors these agreements. It is implied that Shendu accepts the Executors and Valmont is completely unnecessary, as he casually told the Enforcers when he fired them that never seeing them again "would make [him] turned into a very happy dragon", and in fact, he never sought their services again afterward.

Shendu is undoubtedly cunning, having come up with a Talisman Locator to aid the Enforcers, concocting a petrification potion to force Jackie into surrendering the found Talismans, proposing that the Enforcers disguise themselves as Ancient Chinese sacred warriors to trick Lo Pei out of the Talismans, and in a last-ditch attempt to avoid eternal torment, suggesting that he and his siblings tamper with the Book of Ages in order to escape the Netherworld after all eight Demon Portals were sealed shut. Shendu's siblings acknowledge that despite their contempt for him and dismissal of his skills, he's proven "crafty". Shendu, however, is arrogant, vengeful, and single-minded, which often causes him to ignore credible threats outside of his targets despite his cunning. When Shendu appears to possess something, he seems to be highly possessive. As soon as he resurrected (though this also increased his power again), he immediately sought to reclaim all the Noble Animals' powers. He sometimes expresses a sense that the powers contained within his Talismans (which are supposed to have originally belonged to the modern Noble Animals' ancestors) are not just his own, but also a part of him that he cannot do without.

While his vindictiveness seems to prevent him from ever reversing his decision to punish those who have wronged him, Shendu has been known to change his mind about retribution where enemies are concerned. Whereas he initially vowed to tear Valmont limb from limb after he killed Jade, and claimed to be nothing but happy to rid of the Enforcers when they desired to desert him; after rewriting the Book of Ages, he made all of them his court jesters in the rewritten reality (though he did make them put up with abuse typical of his treatment of them in the main reality, when they failed to amuse him, firing heat beams at them to make them dance more effectively) - this may have been due to the Dark Hand in the rewritten timeline having never actually acted against him. Likewise in the rewritten timeline, the Chan Clan were allowed to live as his personal slaves, although he openly reveled in Jackie's utter submission, and threatened to bring down Jade alive for future slights when he excused her failure to bow.

Shendu is not only devoid of compassion and sympathy for mortals, but also cares little to nothing for his family members, displayed most notably by how he left them to rot in the Netherworld so he could rule the Earth himself. When interacting with each of his siblings, Shendu surprisingly displays submissiveness intended to be flattering (if not outright meekness when fearing their combined wrath), and tries to get into their good graces with colored words; possibly in spite of knowing of their strong grudge towards him for imprisoning them in the Netherworld for centuries. Even more disturbingly, Shendu maintained this submissive attitude towards three of them even when he possessed his true form and six of his Talismans. Shendu's siblings, however, seem to care little for his manners. When freeing his siblings one-by-one from the Netherworld, Shendu displayed a delight in subtly teasing Tchang Zu and Bai Tza at one point each; both of whom had possibly the most antagonistic relationships with Shendu out of their family. Shendu and his son Drago's relationship wasn't much less strained and dysfunctional, with Shendu desiring to punish and humble Drago for betraying him, and Drago in turn visibly resenting his father's refusal to give him what he wanted and desiring to best Shendu. Father and son's relationship was so toxic that Shendu even declared when Drago was being sucked into an interdimensional rift that his son deserved no less than to be trapped on the other side for his disloyalty. Despite this, in response to Drago's apology and profuse pleading, Shendu visibly contemplated for a moment before reluctantly deciding to try saving Drago from his fate (with a warning that his son must remember he is second to Shendu while they're on Earth), suggesting that Shendu might genuinely care about his son to some extent (or at the very least, as close to caring about another being as Shendu is capable of).

Despite being centuries old, Shendu is remarkably familiar with modern scientific terminology and technology, such as driving vehicles and (particularly) disabling the International Space Station's communications with NASA.

Quotes[]

Season 1[]

While your Tohru impresses, Valmont, perhaps he should be aided by… the Shadowkhan.
~ Shendu assigning the Shadowkhan to assist Tohru in recovering the shield that has the Rooster Talisman embedded in it.
Valmont, are your men blind? It would seem those possessed of sight might have taken note that the shield contained no Talisman. Now, if my promise to you of unspoiled riches were as empty as that shield…
~ Shendu berating Valmont for the Enforcers' failure to bring the Rooster Talisman.
Hindsight, Valmont. But perhaps the blind can be made to see with the eyes of a dragon.
~ Shendu providing the Dark Hand with the Talisman locator.
Man is much the wiser, when he looks within.
~ Shendu telling Tohru to find out if the Rooster Talisman is within Jade's body.
Shendu: When, and only when, your men acquire all twelve Talismans, the lost treasure of Ching Xi Hung shall cover your "expenses" ten thousand times over.
Valmont: The reputed lost treasure.
Shendu: Ahh, so we have a skeptic. (*has a Shadowkhan briefly show Valmont a golden vase filled with rubies*) Patience, Valmont. Slow and steady wins the race.
~ Shendu remaining firm on his decision to reward the Dark Hand only after they've delivered him all the Talismans.
Valmont, your men are supposed to find Talismans, not sell pets!
~ Shendu berating Valmont after the Enforcers lose the Rabbit Talisman to Jackie while selling Aesop the tortoise to Karl Nivor.
Chan possesses yet another Talisman, while I have NONE?! You are weak, Valmont, and your men are fools!
~ Shendu raging at the Dark Hand following their failure to take the Sheep Talisman from Jackie.
Shendu: I am FREE! The Sheep Talisman enables me to project my astral form. An admirable start, but I must have the others.
Ratso: Yeah, but finding Section 13 won't be as easy as taking a Talisman out of a sleeping kid's hand. Ow! (*gets elbowed by Finn*)
Valmont: Did that occur before or after Chan "chucked the bus"?
Shendu: Hmm. This "sleeping child" may not be sleeping at all. And if her spirit wanders, her vessel has a vacancy!
~ Shendu getting the idea to use the Sheep Talisman to astral project into Jade's dormant body.

Jade: Woah! What are you?!
Shendu: Everything you will grow to fear!
~ Shendu meeting Jade for the first time.
Cannot break free! Blasted chi-spell!
~ Shendu forced to return to his petrified body after Uncle exorcises him from Jade's body.
Shendu: Valmont, where is the Dragon Talisman?
Valmont: My men are on it, Shendu.
Shendu:
Your men could not find their own shadows, and your incompetence continues to stupefy me!
Valmont: Oh?
I'll stupefy you! (*is restrained by a Shadowkhan before he can attack Shendu*)
Shendu: Temper, Valmont.
~ Shendu angering Valmont with his contempt.
Valmont! Where are you? VALMONT! Something is amiss. (*summons the Shadowkhan*) Find Valmont. Find my Talisman.
~ Shendu suspecting Valmont's using the Dragon Talisman.
You may earn it, Valmont. Rumor tells of a Talisman at the North Pole. Dress warmly.
~ Shendu "forgiving" Valmont for withholding the Dragon Talisman.
Finn: Big V, think you can turn up the heat?
Shendu: Allow me. (*breathes fire at the Enforcers*)
~ Shendu taking his frustrations out on the Enforcers who've only managed to catch cold from their failed mission to retrieve the Horse Talisman.
Shendu:The next Talisman is insufficient, Valmont. I need all twelve to shed this petrified form and regain my true powers.
Valmont: We are working on it, Shendu.
Shendu: With your customary ineptitude. Once again, this Chan has snatched a Talisman from your so-called professionals.
~ Shendu being skeptical of the Dark Hand's ability to get the Talismans.
Shendu: After nine centuries, all twelve Talismans have been recovered, yet I possess only two, while Jackie Chan has TEN! You have failed me, Valmont!
Valmont: Now, Shendu, just because Chan's locked them away in Section 13, doesn't mean we won't find—
Shendu: The New Year approaches! It is essential that I have all twelve Talismans before then, IF you ever wish to lay eyes upon the treasure of Ching Xi Hung!
~ Shendu pressuring Valmont into recovering the Talismans from Section 13.
I LIVE!
~ Shendu being restored to his true form.
Shendu: Regrettably, Valmont, you did not provide me with the Talismans. Jackie Chan did.
Valmont: A technicality!
Shendu: Read my lips: no treasure for you.
~ Shendu going back on his promise to reward the Dark Hand for restoring his physical form.
How many lives do you possess?!
~ Shendu being aggravated that Jackie shows up alive at his palace.
You may have the Ox, but relative to me, all that makes you is a very strong mouse!
~ Shendu proving himself to be strong enough to match Jackie who's using the Ox Talisman.
Pity you will not live to witness my reign over your world, but you shall be the first to visit theirs.
~ Shendu attempting to feed Jackie to his dragon minions before Jade stops him.
I will have my revenge, if it takes another nine-hundred years!
~ Shendu, back in his statue form, being defiant before Jade uses the Dragon Talisman to kill him.

Season 2[]

Once I make Jackie Chan pay, I shall tear that buffoon Valmont to pieces!
~ Shendu's spirit declaring eternal hatred to Jackie and Valmont.
Shendu: Wait! I can free you!
Bai Tza: Do not toy with us! The doors can only be opened from the other side.
Dai Gui: The human side.
Shendu: Precisely. As the… humble… spirit you now see before you,
I am free to cross over and possess any human I wish, enabling me to undo the sacred spells which keep you here… eh, if… you so deem it.
~ Shendu promising to free his siblings to avoid eternal torture in their hands.
Shendu: So, I trust you would agree that my, eh… "martyrdom", has left a void for a new, stronger evil to fill. Namely you, my brothers and sisters. Shall I proceed then? (* Shendu's siblings cast their spell on him*) What trick is this?!
Hsi Wu: You have proven crafty, brother, so
we require a safety measure.
Bai Tza: Our spell will keep you bound within the human of your choosing, until you release us.
Xiao Fung: A precaution, so that we know exactly where to find you…
Tso Lan: …in the event we deem it necessary to resume your eternal torment.
Shendu: … accept your terms. I will choose my vessel well to best serve you. And the human most capable for this task is my nemesis, Jackie Chan.
~ Shendu's siblings ensuring his loyalty by casting a spell on him before sending him to free them.
No! Trapped within this proven failure of an ally! Urgh! All the more reason to hasten my quest!
~ Shendu ending up trapped in Valmont's body.
Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated, Chan. Destroy them.
~ Shendu revealing to Jackie and Captain Black that he has returned before ordering the Shadowkhan to finish them off.
Hear this my queen. Your first and most valuable lesson: always destroy your enemies.
~ Shendu attempting to goad the Queen of the Shadowkhan into killing Jackie while he tries to steal the Demon Archive from under her nose.
Shendu: Stop!
Hsi Wu: What's it now, Shendu?
Shendu: Admittedly, I have failed you, my siblings— (*gets zapped by Tchang Zu*) But, I may yet save you as well! We can
all regain our freedom, and even reclaim the centuries wasted in this void, if you allow me to pursue one last recourse.
Po Kong: Ha! And that would be?
Shendu: The Book of Ages.
(*the other demons gasp in fright*)
Dai Gui: Ludicrous!
Hsi Wu: Even
we never dared to tamper with that!
Bai Tza: You risk altering the very fabric of reality!
Shendu: Am I to assume this reality pleases you, sister?
Po Kong: Hmmm. These
are desperate times.
Shendu: Then I will make things right. All you need to is allow me to once more depart from this realm and possess a human. A right human.
~ Shendu escaping his siblings' torture by convincing them to let him use the Book of Ages to escape the Netherworld.
So it is written, so it shall be.
~ Shendu successfully using the Book of Ages to make the Demon Sorcerers rulers of Earth.
Dance, my jesters! Dance!
~ Shendu abusing the Dark Hand members he has turned into his jesters.
Shendu: You! (*beckons Jade closer, and she nervously obeys*) Why do you not bow?
Jackie: (*rushes to bow before Shendu*) Your scaliness, please excuse my slow-witted niece!
Shendu: (*grabs Jackie by the hair*) If she were not excused, she would be in flames. (*drops Jackie*) Now fetch my dinner!
Jackie: Yes, master!
Jade: Jackie…
Jackie: (*coughs as he presents Shendu with a tray of sluggish creatures*) Tasty treat for his glorious excellence!
Shendu: (*starts eating the creatures*) What a good slave you make, Jackie Chan.
Jackie: My joy is to serve you, master.
Shendu: (*finishes his meal as Jade watches in anger*) Keeping one's enemies close is not just wise. It is gratifying.
Jade: (*quietly to herself*) Shendu remembers the way things were, too.
Shendu: Child!
Jade: Uh, yes, master?
Shendu: (*holds up his clawed foot towards her*) It's talons day.
~ Shendu using Jackie and Jade as his slaves, unaware Jade also retains her memory of the original timeline.
Centuries of history altered, your very memory erased, and STILL, somehow, you defy me!? I shall find you, Chan, and I promise you, I shall erase more than your memory!
~ Shendu setting after Jackie, Jade and Uncle after they escape his palace with half the Talismans.
Shendu: Chan!
Dai Gui: So he
is behind this!
Tso Lan: And things were going so well.
Bai Tza: We were even almost beginning to like you, brother.
Shendu: Err-Ah… What do you mean? I was just coming to visit—
Dai Gui: Hsi Wu?! He has been banished to the Netherworld!
Shendu: (*discovers Jade's watch under his foot*) Technology? The child!
Tso Lan: She somehow escaped the historical alterations!
Bai Tza: And if
she knows the history that was…
Shendu: …then Chan now knows of the Book!
~ Shendu and his remaining siblings realizing that Jade is behind Jackie's uprising and the banishment of the rest of them.
I will have my revenge, Chan!
~ Shendu swearing revenge again as he's again banished to the Netherworld.

Season 3[]

Shendu: It would seem you have summoned me merely to humor me, wizard. For to obtain the power of combustion, you would require a living, earthbound dragon, which I am NOT.
Daolon Wong: Hmpm, you underestimate my talents, Lord Shendu. As the most malevolent of dark chi masters, I know a multitude of ancient spells, some of which might restore you.
Shendu: Ahhh… Then you may have my rightful power, Daolon Wong, if you find a spell that will allow me to live again.
~ Shendu striking a deal with Daolon Wong in order to return to the living.
Greeting, everyone! It is great to be back!
~ Shendu savoring in being alive again.
Daolon Wong: Yes! My prize approaches! The power of combustion—
(*Shendu pushes Wong out of the way to absorb the Dragon Talisman's power*)
Shendu: Belongs to me!
~ Shendu denying Daolon Wong the latter's promised reward.
Shendu: Ahh, feel the burn! (*throws a fireball at Jackie who dodges, leading the Enforcers to be incinerated instead*)
Daolon Wong: But brother of darkness, we had an arrangement!
Shendu: I may be a noble dragon, but I am also a Demon Sorcerer, and not known for keeping promises.
~ Shendu mocking Daolon Wong for believing he'd honor their deal.
Levitation, heat-beam eyes! What thoughtful birthday presents. (*takes the powers of the Rooster and Pig Talismans from Daolon Wong*) And you will tell me where to retrieve my other powers, after I have had the pleasure of quick-frying Jackie…
~ Shendu screwing Daolon Wong further before realizing that the Chans have made their exit.
Someone say "fire"?
~ Shendu making a quip after he incinerates the rockets launched at him.
One cannot begin anew without burning a few bridges!
~ Shendu destroying a bridge to stop the van transporting the noble animals.
And tiger makes twelve… which means I now possess so many ways to make you suffer! (*Uncle, Tohru and Section 13 arrive performing Lo Pei's petrifying spell as the shocked Shendu has a flashback of when it was first used on him*) No! No, not again!
~ Shendu having Jackie and Jade at his mercy after he has absorbed all the Talisman powers back before Uncle, Tohru and Section 13 arrive performing the spell that turns him back into a statue.

Season 4[]

I LIVE AGAIN! No finer way to emerge from a slumber than to a nice hot cup of revenge!
~ Shendu's future self about to celebrate his freedom by eating Jackie and Uncle's captured future selves.
NO, NOT AGAIN!
~ Shendu's future self turning back to stone when the Dragon's Teeth are destroyed.

Season 5[]

Jade: You're not scaring me! You're stuck in stone and can't do a thing!
Shendu: (*causes sparks in the vault*) Why so nervous? As you say, I am powerless in my current form, yet see how the very elements of your earthy realm shudder in my presence.
Jade: Yeah, okay, whatever! Great special effects. Not!
Shendu: I know why you are here.
Jade: No way.
Shendu: My ungrateful traitor of a son, Drago. He is close to gaining possession of the demon powers.
Jade: But it's not gonna happen. Not on my watch.
Shendu: FOOLISH CHILD! There is but one power on Earth that can defeat Drago, and it is I, his father!
Jade: We're on the same page, Rocky Road. (*hammers a stone piece out of Shendu*)
Shendu: What do you think you're—
Jade: Just a trim. You'll never miss it. Thanks. Don't get up, I'll help myself out. (*leaves as Shendu cries out in anger*)
~ Shendu revealing to Jade he's aware of Drago being close to victory.
Uncle: Drago has absorbed all eight demon powers. Do you know of a spell to remove them?
Shendu: And
why should I help you?
Uncle: Revenge?
Shendu: My son may have betrayed me, wizard, but I will watch proudly as he destroys your world. Once all eight powers have combined, NOTHING can remove them. Ever.
Uncle: (*turns to leave*) Then conversation is over.
Shendu: Wait. Release me. I will deal with Drago and see that you are spared.
Uncle: (*gasps quietly*) That Uncle cannot do.
Shendu: THEN, your Earth is doomed.
~ Shendu offering to deal with the empowered Drago in exchange for his freedom.
Drago: The future belongs to me!
Shendu: I think not, boy! First, you must pay for your treachery!
~ The released Shendu showing up to battle his son.
I am COMPLETE!
~ Shendu regaining his Talismans from the heroes so that he can stand a chance against Drago.
Drago: Father! Help me!
Shendu: You deserve such a fate for your disloyalty!
Drago: I'm sorry, father! Please!
Shendu: (*decides to help after thinking about it for a moment*) This is my domain. Remember your place!
Drago: Yes, father. Sike!
~ Shendu deciding to save his son after the latter begs for help, only for Drago to double-cross him, resulting in them both being banished from Earth.
I told you not to play with your father's world!
~ Shendu arguing with Drago as they fight in the Netherworld.

Trivia[]

  • In his first season appearances as a statue, he possesses a raspy, hissing voice. Once he is reanimated for the first time, he has a deeper, more menacing voice. Once he is turned back into a statue, he retains his hissing, raspy voice from then on (even when he was reanimated once again). His roars also sound like that of a dinosaur.
    • His roars are reused roars of the Tyrannosaurus rex from the Jurassic Park film franchise.
  • Shendu is the only main antagonist to appear in every season and have a role in the plot of each season.
  • Despite being defeated by one of the Eight Immortals and having his own portal to the Demon Netherworld (commonly referred to as the Netherworld), it is never explained how he managed to escape. It is likely that he made a pact with a dark chi wizard to release him by some unknown means. This can proven by his portal that was never being used prior to the episode "The Eighth Door".
    • Furthermore, given that his siblings greatly loathed and resentful towards him since he didn't try to free them, it can be assumed that he did not include them in his escape as he desired to rule the world for himself, as stated by Tchang Zu. Hsi Wu once commented that Shendu has proven himself "crafty".
  • Shendu is also the only Demon Sorcerer known to have offspring in the form of Drago, although it is unknown who Drago's mother is. Curiously, the present-day Shendu was also aware of Drago, despite him coming from a possible future.
  • According to the book Jackie reads in Showdown in the Old West, Shendu worked with a corrupt mayor a century prior to the start of the series to gain his freedom in a similar fashion to his collaboration with Valmont a hundred years later. The details of the book are dubious however.
  • Shendu can extend control over his Ninja Khan (one of the 9 Shadowkahn tribes) to others if need be. Valmont was seen summoning and commanding the Ninja Khan in "Enter the Viper".
  • All of Shendu's dragon minions are European dragons instead of the traditional Chinese dragons, which is odd since Shendu is of Chinese origin.
