Shepard Leopold is the secondary antagonist of the 2025 A24 horror comedy film Death of a Unicorn.
He was portrayed by Will Poulter, who also played Gally in The Maze Runner and Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Biography[]
Shepard is the son of Odell and Belinda, who is shown drinking at almost every situation and has a drug problem. Despite this, he is very intelligent with a photographic memory and owns his very own business. During a weekend visit from Odell's employer Elliot Kintner and his daughter Ridley, they accidentally strike a unicorn foal.
From the blood of the foal curing Ridley's acne and Elliot's eyesight, the Leopolds become intrigued by the effect after an extract is made using the blood and grating the horn that cures Odell's cancer. Furthermore, Dr. Song reveals that Unicorn blood cannot be replicated for mass production, which Shepard compares to rare NFTs. As such, they plot to abuse the deceased animal's powers to create a greedy business where they sell the formula as a super rare healing factor to rich clients around the world.
However, once night falls, the estate is attacked by a larger unicorn, the foal's parent, which kills several people including Dr. Song. While Odell and the remaining guards chase after the unicorn when it flees, Shepard confronts Dr. Bhatia, destressed from the death of Dr. Song, and manipulates her into continuing to grate the horn. Additionally, he steals one of the vials of the grated horn and snorts it like cocaine, becoming instantly addicted from its magic.
Eventually, both unicorns return to the estate and kill Odell, forcing the survivors inside. They decide to offer the body of the foal to its parents, but they only go ballistic as Shepard had Dr. Bhatia cut off the horn. One of the unicorns attacks Belinda and she orders him to shoot at his father's oxygen tank to cause an explosion. But Shepard refuses, wanting the unicorns alive and lets them disembowel his mother.
Once morning comes, Ridley escapes through a window only to be stopped by Shepard at arrow-point. He reveals from his visions that the unicorns only accept pure-hearted maidens and forces Ridley to comfort them. Once they lie themselves down and Ridley pets them, Shepard ties up the unicorns' feet. He reveals that he will continue what his father has started but this time in much bigger scale as he intends to build a unicorn ranch to breed the unicorns so he can harvest their blood and horns and profit off billions of dollars in global pharmaceutical market.
Elliot arrives and fights Shepard, stabbing him with the foal's horn, only to be stabbed in return with an arrow. Refusing to let the horn go to waist, the wounded Shepard limbs towards his bow. However, the unicorns break free of their restraints and the mare bucks Shepard in the face, killing him.
