~ Sommers expressing his twisted concept of love and emotion to Gunko |
Saint Shepherd Sommers is a major antagonist in the Elbaph arc in One Piece franchise. He is a World Noble of the Shepherd Family and a member of the elite guard of Mary Geoise the God's Knights, who is fascinated with the concept of painful love. He is related to Elder Ju Peter.
History[]
Elbaph Arc[]
After Figarland Shamrock and Gunko failed to recruit Loki into their group, Figarland Shamrock decided to summon re-reinforcements. While still on a Den Den Mushi call, and not yet dressed, Sommers was summoned alongside the couch that he was lounging on to Elbaph, disconnecting his call as he was inquiring about the food shortage to whoever he was calling. At first Sommers and his fellow God's Knight Rimoshifu Killingham were against that they'd been summoned, with Sommers being especially surprised that his couch had traveled through the abyss while he was on it. After being caught up on what their mission was, Sommers prepared to abduct the Giant children while Shamrock proposed that with four God's Knights present they could make a "game" out of it.
Appearance[]
Sommers is an Elderly man who's white beard, wrinkles and shaggy body hair makes him appear older than his relative Shepherd Ju Peter. Though given the uncertain ages of the Five Elders whether or not he is actually older is uncertain. When he was first summoned, Sommers was not dressed properly instead wearing only a light undershirt and dark briefs.
His God's Knights attire is similar to Shamrock's as a regal dark colored military garb with light accents. He also wears a sword at his side with a thorn shaped guard.
Sommers lost his right arm when it was slice off by Scopper Gaban (who bepassed his appparent immortality).
Personality[]
Unlike most World Nobles Saint Sommers appears to be more informed of the goings on of the Lower World and calmer in handling the crisis of the Food Shortage ravaging the Holy Land. However his calmness appears to also lapse into outright absentmindedness, at first not registering that he'd been summoned at first believing Gunko and Figarland Shamrock were in his mansion rather than him being in Elbaph. He is aware of the late King Harald and possible respected him as he wondered if they were visiting his grave.
Despite his aloof and seemingly affable nature, Sommers is an extremely twisted and sadistic man. With his Devil Fruit, Sommers can inflict unimaginable emotional pain to his victims on top of the serious physical pain the thorns cause. His thorns cause more pain the more someone cares about the victim, letting him rip families and loved ones apart, taking pleasure with his warped and sadistic mentality that love is about inflicting pain onto others.
He is shown fearful when seeing Scopper Gaban (the former left hand man of Gol D. Roger).
Relationships[]
God's Knights[]
Sommers is a member of the God's Knights and appears to be casual and amiable with the members, though his casual state of undress greatly embarrassed Gunko so much that she blushed and had to turn away while the summoned knight got dressed.
Figarland Shamrock appeared unfazed by this however and instead moved on topic to discuss the mission at hand. Notably, he was the only one to address Shamrock by name rather than commander, suggesting familiarity between them.
Abilities and Powers[]
As a World Noble Sommers has the power to do essentially as he pleases and can summon an Admiral to handle any transgressor that may interfere with or threaten him. While his own powers have yet to be displayed, given his status as a member of the God's Knights and the fact that he was summoned to the fearsome land of Giants, Elbaph where 100 years prior the World Government had been hesitant to risk war with the residents, it is likely that Sommers is a powerful fighter. However, he was no match for Scopper Gaban when he instantly cut off his arm and dealt a massive wound into his chest.
Devil Fruit[]
Sommers ate the Thorn-Thorn Fruit, which allows him to cover his targets with metaphysical thorns to keep others from touching them. The more love that a person has for the target, the more damage they receive from the thorns.
Weapons[]
Sommers is shown to wield a sword.
