Shere Khan is the main antagonist of the Grimm Fairy Tales' adaptation of The Jungle Book. He is the leader of the Shere, also known as the Tiger Tribe. In this version, Shere Khan is a white tiger, so as to distinguish him from the other tigers.

Biography[]

The Jungle Book[]

Shere Khan is first seen fighting alongside the rest of the Shere in the great animal battle of Kipling isle, mostly against the wolves. The battle is brought to a stop when a pirate ship carrying four human children crashes onto the island. At first, Khan intends to eat the children, until the panther, Bagheera makes it clear that he will protect the children. Four of the animal tribes, the Bandar Log (apes and monkeys), the Tavi (meerkats and other small mammals, Seeone (wolves), and the Shere decide to adopt one of the children, as they have brought peace to the jungle. Shere Khan decides to adopt one of the boys, seeing his strong spirit, and names him Bomani.

Years later, when all the children have grown up, Shere Khan leads the tigers into an ambush against the wolves, mainoy to avenge the death of his mate, Shere Daya, who was killed in the Great Battle. He kills Mother Wolf and wounds Won Tolla when he tries to intervene. When Bomani tries to kill a wolf (after having been taunted by a vulture), Khan rebukes him by slashing him across the arm. after the wolves were massacred, Khan leads the Shere back to their part of the jungle. That night, as Khan is being groomed by two other tigers, he hears Mowglii's mournful cry, and realizes that the Seeone has not entirely been killed.

The following day, Khan sees Mowglii pursuing Bomani through the jungle, believing him to be responsible for the deaths of the Seeone, only to end up in the Shere's den. Khan congratulates Bomani for supposedly leading her there, but slashes his arm again when he tries to protest. Mowglii then attacks the tiger king, and they engage in a fight that ends with Khan falling to his supposed death, leaving Bomani to take over as leader of the Shere.

The Jungle Book: Last of the Species[]

After Mowglii and Tobaqui (the jackal sidekick of Akili, the child adopted by the Tavi) accidentally end up in the caves underneath Kipling Isle because of a battle between the Shere and the Payari (the elephant tribe), they run into Shere Khan, who was long thought to have died after his battle with Mowglii, but, he, in fact, survived, only sustaining an injured leg. He then reluctantly leads the two towards the exit of the caves, to avoid the feared Bada Dar (bear tribe). In the midst of the journey, Khan admits to Mowglii that while he was initially plotting revenge against her, he was also reflecting on his mistakes, and longed to be reunited with Bomani. When the threesome run into one of the bears, all three of them work together to fight and kill the bear. Khan then emerges back into the jungle, and attempts to reclaim leadership of the Shere, but, both he and Bomani are both exiled from the Shere, the former due to his injured leg, the latter due to rescuing the wolf cubs from Kaa, which the Shere view as weakness.

The Jungle Book: Fall of the Wild[]

In the third and final arc of the series, it is revealed that during their time in exile, Khan and Bomani have been feeding off of dead bodies alongside Sag, the hyena and other scavengers. He then watches as Bomani saves Mowglii from being trampled during her plan to rescue Akili, who was kidnapped by the Bandar. Soon after, however, Mowglii herself is captured by pirates, who came to the island to capture her, due to the bounty for her safe return. Bomani, having seen this, goes after her, as Khan sees that the Shere and the Payari are still in battle. Shere Khan then decides to go after Bomani, with Tobaqui and Dewan (the one adopted by the Bandar), while Akili and Bagheera stop the battle between the tigers and elephants. They succeed in rescuing Mowglii, but Bomani dies after being impaled by one of the pirates. Shere Khan then says a eulogy on his fallen son's behalf, and allows Mowglii to wear the battle claws that Bomani wore, as he believes that it would have honored him.

After returning to the island, Khan reclaims leadership of the Shere. Khan, along with Mowglii, Akili, and Bagheera, then leads the united animal tribes into battle against the pirates. After the battle, Khan and the other tigers return to their territory, with peace having been restored to Kipling Isle.

Personality[]

In the first arc, Shere Khan is cold and cruel, and rules the Shere with iron claws. Regarding his initial treatment of Bomani, Khan was very cold and harsh towards his adopted son, derisively calling him "failed tiger", and clawing him as punishment for disobeying him. He also had a vengeful streak, as he attacked the Seeone wolves to avenge the death of his mate (who was killed by the wolves in the great battle).

In the second and third arc, Khan's softer side was shown, having fully changed for the better. He is shown to have regretted his actions against the seeone, and longed to return to his tribe, mostly Bomani. Despite his vengeful streek, he genuinely did care about those he loved, as seen when he allowed Bomani (and later Mowglii) to wear the battle claws of his mate, and the fact that he was devastated at Bomani's death. He's also shown to be a very courageous and fierce fighter, as seen when he helps lead the attack against the pirates.
