Sheriff Ethan Miller, formerly Deputy Miller, is a supporting character appearing on the WB/CW television series Smallville.
He first appeared as a minor supporting character before becoming the main antagonist of the Season 2 episode "Suspect".
He was a good friend to the Kent family, and was well-liked by the community of Smallville. He first appeared as a deputy before being promoted to Sheriff.
He was portrayed by Mitchell Kosterman.
Ethan was close friends with Jonathan Kent when they were both attended Smallville High; even signing Jonathan's yearbook with the message "To Jonathan, a great quarterback; a better friend."
He was also the first Smallville resident to meet Jonathan and Martha's newly-adopted son, Clark. Ethan continued working for the Sheriff's department, eventually becoming sheriff. Sheriff Miller was always on the scene involving meteor infected incidents where it came to Tina Greer, Earl Jenkins and Harry Volk.
In "Suspect," Ethan was secretly working for Lionel Luthor, providing him with background information on LexCorp's Board of Directors so Lionel could blackmail them into selling their shares and thus buy-out LexCorp. He did it in exchange for payouts. When Ethan couldn't reconcile Lionel's demands with his own conscience, he tried to break-off the relationship.
But Lionel then threatened to expose the sheriff if he didn't continue to do favors for LuthorCorp from time to time. Deciding to terminate their arrangement since he couldn't meet Lionel's demands, he sneaked into the Luthor Mansion and shot Lionel twice in the chest.
Ethan then made the difficult choice to frame Jonathan Kent and had Mike, another high school friend, drug him. Using the well-known tension between Jonathan and Lionel, Ethan had Jonathan drugged at the Wild Coyote and laid out evidence that led to Jonathan's arrest. To cover his tracks, he killed Mike and left his body in the freezer at the Wild Coyote.
Clark and Pete came up with a plan to draw the shooter out. First, they put out the word that Lionel was getting better; then they move him to another floor. Sheriff Miller shows up and shoots Lionel's empty bed.
Clark disarms him and confronts him with everything he knows. The sheriff also faked Jonathan's blood alcohol test.
His plot, however, was uncovered by Clark, and he was arrested serving a prison sentence for murder. Ethan was later replaced by Nancy Adams as new Sheriff.
